2008 Elizabethtown College
Men's Soccer Preview

Following their fifth consecutive trip to the Commonwealth Conference finals in 2007, the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team will look to battle their way back to the title contest in 2008.

With just six returning starters from last year's squad that finished 14-6-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the conference, 26th-year head coach Skip Roderick '74 will need to replace 57 percent of their offense as well as four All-Conference performers.

Tops among returning scorers is senior forward Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), who was a second-team All-Conference pick after netting 11 goals, including four game-winners, and adding four assists for 26 points.

Joining Diller up front is sophomore Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic), who was named Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year after tallying two goals and seven assists for 11 points.

Additional depth will be provided by senior Dan Flaherty (West Chester, PA/Henderson), junior Bryan Kuppe (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) and sophomoresChris Cartwright (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) andTaylor Helsel (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock).

Anchoring the Blue Jay defense is two-time first-team All-Region honoree Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey). Known for his strong play in the air at both ends of the field, Bunting scored twice and added four assists last season.

Junior Luke Mitchell (Lititz, PA/Warwick) returns to the lineup after missing most of last season with an injury, while sophomore Tony Pacella (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) aims to build upon a strong freshman campaign.

In goal, senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with a 14-5 record and a stellar 0.74 goals against average in 19 starts, compiling nine shutouts and making 58 saves for a .806 save percentage.
