Men's tennis competes at Muhlenberg Classic

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team joined Wilkes University and Moravian College at the Mule Classic, hosted by Muhlenberg College on Sunday.

First-year student Manrique Arrea (Costa Rica/Lincoln School) won the first singles championship as he defeated Doug Morrow of Moravian 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals and Dan Zakheim of Muhlenberg 8-1 in the finals.

Junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was runner-up at second singles, as he defeated John Osborne of Muhlenberg via walkover as Osborne retired after losing the first set 7-5, then lost to Ian Box of Moravian 8-5 in the finals.

Senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) also advanced to the finals of third singles, defeating Chris Cozzillio of Wilkes 6-3, 6-4 but falling to Chandler Forman of Moravian 8-2 in the finals.

In doubles, Arrea and Kirkhoff moved to the finals of flight one with an 8-2 win over Osborne and Yoni Farber of Muhlenberg, but lost to Morrow and Box 8-1 in the finals.

Blue Jays Conclude Action at MASCAC Men's Tennis Tournament

KINGSTON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College wrapped up competition at the Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championships at Kirby Park on Sunday.

Four Blue Jays lost in semifinal action in singles play, while the doubles team of senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) fell 8-2 in the flight three finals to Jansen Hein and Luke Ruch of Messiah College.

Junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) fell at second singles to Jonathan Siemen of Messiah 6-3, 6-0, senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) was edged by Chris Cozzillio of Wilkes University 7-5, 3-6 (10-5 tiebreak) at third singles, first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) fell 6-0, 6-0 to Hein at fourth singles, and Dombach was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Matt Hotchkiss of Lebanon Valley College in sixth singles.

Four Singles, One Doubles Team Still Alive After Day One of MASCAC Men's Tennis Tournament

KINGSTON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College advanced four singles players and one doubles team to Sunday's action at the Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championships at Kirby Park on Saturday.

Junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita), senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley), first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) moved into the semifinals in singles play, while the doubles team of Dombach and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) advanced to the finals of third doubles with a pair of victories.

Kirkhoff defeated Johnathan Hand of King's College 7-6, 6-3 in a quarterfinal match at second singles, while Voshell downed Colin Baier of Lycoming College 6-0, 6-1 in a third singles quarterfinal match. Playing at fourth singles, Metz got past Sid Dunn of FDU-Florham 6-3, 6-0 in quarterfinal play and at sixth singles Dombach defeated Gabriel Mallen of Manhattanville College 7-6, 6-3 in quarterfinal action.

In doubles, Dombach and Steiner won 9-8 (7-5) in the quarterfinals over David Boe and Povl Schmidt of King's, then knocked off Anthony Guerriero and Charles Marriner of DeSales University 8-2 in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's final against Jansen Hein and Luke Ruch of Messiah College.

In other action, sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) downed Schmidt 6-2, 6-2 in a first-round match but lost 6-4, 6-3 to Julian Oribe of Manhattanville College in quarterfinals at first singles, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) won 6-3, 6-2 over Tom Miller of Wilkes University in a fifth singles first-round match, but lost to William Tanis of Messiah 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Kirkhoff and Voshell defeated Jake Hoover and Dan Bullen of DeSales 8-6 in a first-round match, but lost 8-3 to Nate Ipsen and Jonathan Siemen of Messiah in the quarterfinals in flight one, and at flight two Walker and Metz won 8-2 over Jon Kindred and Joe Sulpizio in the quarterfinals, but lost to Alex Bruin and John Zalesky of FDU-Florham in the semifinals.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team tuned up for the Middle Atlantic Conference singles and doubles championships with a 9-0 win at DeSales University in their final regular-season match on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (9-6 overall) did not drop a set in the victory over the Bulldogs (2-11 overall), losing a total of six games at the first four singles flights combined.

Sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Jon Kindred 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) moved up to second singles and won 6-0, 6-1 over Dan Bullen, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at third singles over Joe Sulpizio.

At fourth singles, first-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Anthony Guerriero, first-year student Shawn Cotton (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) downed Seth Conklin 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles, and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) won 6-4, 6-4 at sixth singles over Charles Marriner.

Blue Jays set to compete at MASCAC singles and doubles championships

Elizabethtown College Men's Tennis In Action at MASCAC Individual Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the 2008 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.

Action at the two-day tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday with semifinals and finals in each of six singles flights and three doubles flights.

Sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) will play at first singles after finishing as the runner-up at third singles last season. A first-team All-Commonwealth Conference selection, he leads the Blue Jays with a 12-9 overall record (9-6 at first singles) and has a career record of 30-16 in two seasons.

At second singles, junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) will compete after finishing 7-8 during the regular season. He was also a first-team All-Conference choice, and went 7-6 at second singles in dual matches for the Blue Jays.

Senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) will play at third singles after finishing second at fourth singles last season. He carries an 11-7 record into action, including 10-4 in dual matches, and has a career mark of 21-19.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) is entered at fourth singles, after claiming second-team All-Conference honors this season after going 9-12 overall and 8-7 in dual matches.

Sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) was one of three Blue Jays to finish in double figures in wins, going 10-11 overall. He will play at fifth singles after winning four times in that lineup spot during the season.

Rounding out the lineup is first-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands), who went 6-3 overall during the season and 4-2 at sixth singles.

In doubles, Kirkhoff and Voshell will play at flight one after going 8-6 overall during the regular season, and Walker and Metz will team at flight two after compiling a 12-7 overall mark and 11-4 in dual matches.

At third doubles, senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) will play with sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) after the pair fashioned a strong 9-3 record in dual matches.

The Blue Jays have not claimed an individual MAC champion since 2005, when Greg Voshell won at third singles and Josh Miller captured the title at fourth singles.

Three Blue Jays Named All-Conference in Men's Tennis

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Three members of the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team have been named All-Commonwealth Conference, as voted upon by the league's head coaches and released Wednesday.

Sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) were named to the first team, while first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a second-team selection.

Walker, a second-team All-Conference honoree last season, has played first singles all season for the Blue Jays and compiled an 11-9 overall record, including an 8-6 mark in dual matches. In two seasons, Walker has an overall record of 29-16.

Kirkhoff has been the number-two player in the lineup for the Blue Jays, and is 7-8 overall on the season and 7-6 in dual matches. He also played at the top doubles spot in the lineup with senior Andrew Voshell and posted a 7-6 record.

Metz stepped into the lineup at fourth singles and posted an 8-12 overall record, including a 7-7 dual-match mark. He has teamed with Walker at second doubles to fashion an 11-7 overall record and a 10-3 mark in dual matches.

Messiah College, which won its third straight Commonwealth Conference team championship, swept the major awards as Nathan Ipsen was Player of the Year, Jansen Hein was Rookie of the Year and Frank Petre was Coach of the Year.

The Blue Jays (8-7 overall) finish their regular season with a match at DeSales University on Thursday afternoon before heading to Wilkes-Barre for the MAC singles and doubles championships on Saturday and Sunday.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A doubles sweep helped propel Elizabethtown College to a 5-4 victory over Muhlenberg College in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.

Picking up singles wins for the Blue Jays (8-6 overall) were junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita), who downed Brian Wernick 6-3, 6-2 at second singles, and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) who won 6-3, 6-2 over Jonathan Farber at third singles.

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- A third-set tiebreaker win by Matt Grodzinski in the final match of the day gave Lebanon Valley College a 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown College in the opening match of the Commonwealth Conference men's tennis playoffs on Saturday afternoon at the Hempfield Sports Complex.

Grodzinski defeated sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to enable the Dutchmen to advance to Sunday's conference championship match against top-seeded Messiah College.

The Blue Jays (7-6 overall) earned singles wins from junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) at second singles by a 6-2, 6-2 score over Tom Neckelmann, senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) by 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 over Jared Zeigler at third singles, and from first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) at fourth singles over Brad Sweigart, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, the Blue Jays earned one win as Walker and Metz teamed for an 8-3 win over Jared Zeigler and Jon Gingrich at flight two.

Men's tennis prepares for Commonwealth Conference team tournament

Elizabethtown College Men's and Women's Tennis Teams to Compete in Commonwealth Playoffs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's tennis teams will participate in the Commonwealth Conference team tournament this weekend at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville.

The Blue Jay women (12-3 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) are the top seed and will play in the championship match on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Saturday's first-round match between third-seeded Messiah College and second-seeded Lebanon Valley College.

The Blue Jay men (7-5 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) will face Lebanon Valley in a first-round match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with the winner to play Messiah on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the championship match.

The Commonwealth Conference men's and women's champions will each receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins May 2.

Elizabethtown's women will look for its third Commonwealth Conference championship in the last four years, having won in both 2004 and 2005. The Blue Jays lost 5-4 to Moravian College in last year's finals, in the first year that the conference earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) leads the Blue Jays in victories with a 17-3 mark, including a 14-1 record in dual matches. She ranks fifth in program history with 52 career singles victories, and was the MAC individual champion at #3 singles in the fall.

Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) is 12-8 overall at #2 singles, including a 10-5 record in dual matches, and sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year after going 9-9 overall and 8-7 in dual matches at #1 singles.

Also reaching double figures in victories were sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) and first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), each finishing with an 11-4 overall record. First-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) joined the team for the spring portion of the schedule and went 6-3 at #6 singles.

In doubles, Smith and Yu teamed to go 11-6 overall and 10-4 at #1 doubles, and Swarr and Russell finished with a 14-3 overall record and 12-2 at #2 doubles. Albers and Fisher rolled to a 9-1 mark at #3 doubles for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jay men finished as runner-up to Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference finals last season, after claiming the team title in 2005.

Junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) added five wins at #2 singles and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) finished 9-7 overall and 8-4 in dual matches, primarily at #3 singles.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) chipped in with six victories while playing at #4 singles, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) posted an even 9-9 record as the team's #5 player. First-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) cracked the lineup late in the season and finished 4-2 at #6 singles.

All three Blue Jay doubles teams finished with winning records, as Kirkhoff and Voshell went 6-5 at #1 doubles, Metz and Walker finished 9-7 overall and 8-3 at #2 doubles, and senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) teamed with sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) to go 7-3 at #3 doubles.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team won their second match in as many days with a 7-2 win over Goucher College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (7-5 overall) won five of the six singles matches, as sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Michael Brooks 6-1, 6-2 at first singles and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) won in a 10-6 tiebreaker over Chris Covey at second singles after splitting the first two sets 6-2 and 4-6.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) winner at third singles over Steve Baum, sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) won 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles over Francisco Barrera, and senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) swept Billie Weiss 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles.

In doubles, Voshell and Stolar won 8-1 at flight two over Covey and Michael Simon, and Dombach and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) teamed for a 9-8 (7-4) win over Weiss and Jeff McLeod at flight three.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Two three-set victories in singles lifted Elizabethtown College to a 5-4 victory over Juniata College in a matchup of former Commonwealth Conference men's tennis foes on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (6-5 overall) trailed 4-3 with two singles matches remaining, but first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) defeated Arnab Chakrabarti 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at fourth singles and first-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) downed Acer Van Wallendael 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at sixth singles to give Elizabethtown the win over the Eagles (6-10 overall).

In other singles action, sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 6-1, 6-4 at first singles over Jarrad Silver, and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) defeated Ryan Navarro at third singles by a 6-1, 6-4 score.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Messiah College clinched the top seed in next weekend's Commonwealth Conference men's tennis playoffs with an 8-1 win at Elizabethtown College on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (5-5 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) earned their lone victory at second doubles as sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) won 8-4 over Sam Shorts and William Tanis.

Elizabethtown will face Lebanon Valley College in a semifinal match next Saturday at the Hempfield Sports Complex, with the winner to play Messiah on Sunday, April 20 for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Andrew Voshell Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in Men's Tennis

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for the week ending April 6, the conference office announced Monday.

Voshell lost a total of two games in two singles victories as the Blue Jays swept to 9-0 victories over Lycoming College and Albright College in conference action last week.

He evened his record at 5-5 on the season with a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories at flight three of singles play, and teamed with junior Jeff Kirkhoff for two wins at first doubles to extend their winning streak to five straight matches.

The Blue Jays (5-3 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) host King's College in a non-conference match on Monday afternoon.

READING, Pa. --- Despite being forced indoors by rainy conditions, the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team earned a 9-0 win over Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action on Friday afternoon.

At first singles, sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was 6-1, 6-4 winner over David Scherler, junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) downed Yoshi Otsuka 6-2, 6-0 at second singles, senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Kevin Gauby at third singles and first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles over Jason Lefkoe.

Due to the fact that Albright's LifeSports Center has just four courts, the final two singles matches were played as pro sets. At fifth singles, sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) was an 8-0 winner over Phil Bobbitt, and first-year student Stijn Van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) defeated Jonathan Hong 8-1 at sixth singles.

In doubles, Kirkhoff and Voshell earned their fifth straight win with an 8-3 victory over Scherler and Otsuka at flight one, Walker and Metz defeated Bobbitt and Gauby 8-0 at flight two, and senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) downed Lefkoe and Hong 8-0 at flight three.

Jeff Kirkhoff Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in Men's Tennis

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for the week ending March 30, the conference office announced Monday.

Kirkhoff went 2-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles as the Blue Jays posted two wins in three matches last week, including a 5-4 win over Lebanon Valley College in the conference opener on Saturday.

In that contest, Kirkhoff defeated the Dutchmen's Tom Neckelmann 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the final singles match to clinch the win for the Blue Jays. He also teamed with senior Andrew Voshell for an 8-6 win in doubles.

Kirkhoff, the number-two singles player for the Blue Jays, also posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mark Allinson of Villa Julie College in an 8-1 victory on Tuesday, and joined with Voshell at the top spot in the doubles lineup for two other victories on the week.

For the season, Kirkhoff has a 3-3 record in singles and a 4-2 mark in doubles in match play for the Blue Jays (3-3 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth), who travel to Lycoming College on Wednesday.

Kirkhoff defeated Tom Neckelmann 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to give the Blue Jays (3-2 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) the victory over the Dutchmen (5-6 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth).

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- In the final match of its spring break trip, the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team lost to the Catholic University of America 6-3 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

The lone singles win for the Blue Jays (1-2 overall) came at first singles, where sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Andrew Kracht 10-3 in a third-set tiebreker after splitting the first two sets by identical 6-3 scores.

The Blue Jays won two of the three doubles matches, as Walker teamed with first-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) for a 9-8 (7-5) win at second doubles over Mike Schinella and Mike Reany, while at third doubles the team of senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) downed Rich Sheaffer and Connor Donnelly of the Cardinals by an 8-4 score.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis lost an 8-1 match to Tri-State University on Wednesday night, as the Thunder won five of six singles matches to improve to 4-0 on the season while the Blue Jays dropped to 1-1.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was the lone winner on the evening for the Blue Jays, winning 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at fourth singles over Mario Bonardi of Tri-State.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team opened its 2008 schedule with a 9-0 win over Lynchburg College on Monday morning. The Blue Jays (1-0 overall) posted five straight-set wins in singles over the Hornets (0-2 overall).

At first singles, sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Jay Duimstra 6-4, 6-2, with junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) earning a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marc Halley at second singles and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) downing Nick Carroll 6-3, 6-0 at third singles.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at fourth singles over Kyler Paluga, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Brian Nelson at fifth singles. First-year student Shawn Cotton (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernardsville) won by forfeit at sixth singles.

In doubles, Kirkhoff and Voshell defeated Duimstra and Halley 8-5 at flight one, and Walker and Metz teamed for an 8-1 win over Carroll and Paluga at flight two. Lynchburg forfeited at third doubles to the Blue Jay team of senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe).
