Kevin Clark Finishes Fourth in Decathlon at NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships

OSHKOSH, Wisc. --- Elizabethtown College senior Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) became an All-American for the fifth time in his career after finishing fourth in the decathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday.

Clark, who was seventh in the competition after day one, used a first-place finish in the pole vault (14 feet, 11 inches) and fifth-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (15.34 seconds) and 1,500-meter run (4:39.85) to climb into fourth with a total of 6,608 points.

It is the fifth time in Clark's illustrious career that he has earned All-America honors, having done so four times in the pole vault (indoors 2006 through 2008, and outdoors in 2006). His was the 27th All-America performance in men's and women's track and field by an Elizabethtown athlete, and the fourth this year.

Ozzie Brown of Moravian College won the decathlon with 7,192 points, followed by Kyle Steiner of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (7,126 points), Josh Lovell of Linfield College (6,675 points) and Clark.

In other action, senior Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) finished 15th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.08.

On Saturday, senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) will be the lone Blue Jay in action as she competes in the 5,000 meters at 4:55 p.m., after taking All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the 10,000 meters on Thursday night.

Erin Fisher Takes All-America Honors at NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

OSHKOSH, Wisc. --- Elizabethtown College senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the women's 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Thursday evening.

Fisher (left) crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 36:00.52 to become the third Blue Jay to be named All-America in women's track and field, joining Melissa St. Clair '05 (four times) and Carrie Kerna '04 (three times).

"I couldn't be happier with Erin's progress throughout the season," said head coach Chris Straub. "She got a late start to the outdoor season due to injury, but definitely peaked at the right time."

After passing through the first 5,000 meters in a time of 18:03, Fisher was among a pack of 10 runners within two seconds of the lead with one mile (1,600 meters) to go. Pushing the pace, she moved toward the front of the pack and settled into a battle for sixth place over the final 600 meters.

Fisher, who earned All-America honors in cross country with a 15th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Division III championships, will compete in the final race of her career on Saturday when she runs in the 5,000 meters.

In other women's action, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) finished 17th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.48.

On the men's side, senior Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) is in seventh place in the decathlon after amassing 3,432 points on the first day of the two-day event.

His highest-scoring event was the 400 meters, when he took fourth with a career-best time of 49.98 seconds. He also finished second in the 100 meters (11.21 seconds, 814 points) and was fifth in the long jump (21 feet, 5 1/2 inches, 707 points).

Clark also competed in the pole vault, but the four-time All-American was unable to clear the bar in three attempts after wrapping up action in the decathlon just moments earlier.

On Friday, Clark will see action in the final five events of the decathlon (110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters) beginning at 2:00, while senior Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) will participate in the 800-meter trials at 7:35 p.m.

Pictured, from left: Drew Graybeal, Kevin Clark, Erin Fisher and Tiffany Kulp.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Four members of the Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the NCAA Division III championships at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, beginning Thursday and continuing through Saturday.

For the men, senior Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) will compete in the decathlon and the pole vault, while senior Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) is entered in the 800 meters. On the women's side, senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) will run in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) is slated to participate in the 1,500 meters.

Clark is competing in the pole vault (Thursday, 6:00 p.m.) for the third straight year at the outdoor championships, and in the decathlon (Thursday, 1:00 p.m. and Friday, 2:00 p.m.) for the second consecutive season. He is a four-time All-American in the pole vault (three times indoor, once outdoor) and was the 2007 NCAA Division III indoor champion and 2006 Division III outdoor runner-up.

In March, Clark finished fourth in the pole vault with a height of 16 feeet, 5 1/2 inches at the Division III indoor championships. He was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and pole vault as the Blue Jays won their second straight MAC championship.

He qualified for the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 2 3/4 inches at the Messiah Invitational on April 11, and set a school record in the decathlon with an NCAA-qualifying score of 6,648 points at the same meet. Clark set the school record in the pole vault of 16 feet, 6 inches at Shippensburg in 2006.

Graybeal is entered in the 800 meters (Friday, 7:35 p.m.) at the Division III outdoor championships for the second straight year, finishing sixth last season with a time of 1:54.18 to earn All-America honors for the fourth time in his career.

He previously was named All-America in the 400 meters at the 2008 indoor championships, in the 800 meters at the 2007 indoor championships, and in the distance medley relay at the 2006 indoor championships.

Graybeal is seeded fourth with a time of 1:50.99 that he established at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on May 13. He will be looking to break the school outdoor record in the 800 meters of 1:50.66 set in 2006 by Tyson Evensen.

In addition to the 800 meters, Graybeal also qualified in the 400 meters but declined entry to the event in order to concentrate on the 800 meters.

Fisher is entered with a time of 17:20.60 in the 5,000 meters (Saturday, 4:55 p.m.) set at Swarthmore, and 36:03.08 in the 10,000 meters (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) set at the Penn Relays. She competed in the 5,000 meters at this year's Division III indoor championships and in the 10,000 meters at last year's outdoor meet.

The two-time defending MAC indoor and outdoor champion in the 5,000 meters, Fisher is also the two-time MAC champion in cross country, where she earned All-America honors with a 15th-place finish at the 2007 Division III championships.

She will look to break the Elizabethtown College records in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, which were set by Melissa St. Clair '05 during the 2005 season. St. Clair ran 17:14.79 in the 5,000 meters at the Division III outdoor championships en route to earning All-America honors, and was timed in 35:46.62 in the 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays.

Kulp is a first-time qualifier for the NCAA Division III championships, having earned a berth in the 1,500 meters (Thursday, 5:15 p.m.) with a time of 4:36.03 at Swarthmore on May 13 that broke the school record of 4:36.33 set in 2005 by Katie Garner.

She is the three-time defending MAC outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters and has also won three straight gold medals in the 800 meters at the MAC indoor championships. In all, Kulp has claimed 10 MAC championships (eight individual, two relay) during her Blue Jay career.

Action begins Thursday at 1:00 p.m. with the men's decathlon, and continues through Saturday at 5:55 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.

Seniors Fisher and Bresnahan Roll in the 10,000 Meters at Bucknell Bison Distance Night

LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Distance runners from the Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams saw action at the Bucknell Bison Distance Classic on Friday night.

For the women, senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) narrowly missed her personal best time in the 10,000 meters by just two seconds but ran an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 36:43.99.

"Erin only started ground running a few times last week and did her first true workout on the ground four days before this race," said coach Chris Straub. "She is now running pain free thanks to the physical therapy at Renaissance Healthcare of Hershey.  After her performance, Erin is clearly back on track toward achieving her goals in the last season of her college career."

Fisher opened the race conservatively, running the first 5,000 meters in 18:35. As she progressed through miles four, five and six she accelerated and completed her second 5k in 18:09. She will compete next at the Penn Relays on April 24, where she hopes to break the school record of 35:50.50 set by 2004 NCAA Division III runner-up Melissa St. Clair.

Meanwhile, senior Dave Bresnahan (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) completed the men's 10,000 meters in 31:38.64 to catapult himself up to third on the college's all-time list.

"Dave has worked very hard for five years to have this race come to fruition.  No one is more deserving.  Dave often ran over 100 miles per week regularly while abroad in New Zealand last semester and had a great 10-week training block over the winter months," said Straub.

Bresnahan got through the first 5k in 15:57 and came home with a split of 15:41 for the second half of the race to climb into third on the all-time list behind All-Americans Dave Berdan (30:14.54) and Jose Miranda (30:17.63) and ahead of Dustin Scott (31:45.65).

In other events, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) overcame a bad spill at the first water jump to break her own school record in the women's steeplechase with a hand time of 11:39.0.

Senior Ryan St. Clair (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) and sophomore Myles Lund (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) set personal records in the men's steeplechase, as St. Clair finished in 9:47.7 and Lund in 10:06.1.

First-year student Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) ran a personal best in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 15:37.50, which is the second-best mark ever for an Elizabethtown first-year student. Junior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) was timed in 15:57.86.

He is a three-time All-America honoree in the pole vault, including each of the last two years at the indoor championships and at the 2006 outdoor championships, where he finished second.

He becomes the first Blue Jay to participate in the NCAA championships all four years of his career, and will look to break his own school record of 49.34 seconds set in 2006.

He is also a three-time All-America honoree, having earned the honors in the 800 meters at both the 2007 indoor and outdoor championships along with the distance medley relay at the 2006 indoor championships.

Fisher is seeded in ninth place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:25.68 set at the Susquehanna Open on Feb. 16. She previously competed at the NCAA championships in the 10,000-meter run at the 2007 outdoor meet.

She earned All-America honors in cross country with a 15th-place finish at the 2007 championships, after winning the NCAA Mideast Regional championships. Fisher also won her second consecutive MAC cross country title in 2007.

Elizabethtown College to Compete at MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams will be in action at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships at Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jay men will favored to win their sixth straight MAC indoor crown while the women will look to regain the MAC team title that they won in 2006.

Elizabethtown's men are led by seniors Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg), both of whom have played key roles in the Blue Jays' run of five straight team titles.

Clark, the defending NCAA Division III indoor champion in the pole vault, will be looking for his fourth MAC indoor title in the event. Last year, he set a MAC indoor record by clearing 16 feet, 6 inches en route to the championships.

He will also be a top contender for a medal in the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump and the 200 meters for the Blue Jays, after taking fourth in the hurdles and the long jump last year.

Graybeal swept the 400 and 800 meters at both the MAC indoor and outdoor championships last year, and is the top seed in both events this year. He has also been part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team in each of the last two years.

Junior Phil Alder (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) and sophomore Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) each won two golds last season, in the 4x400 and distance medley relays.

Sophomore A.J. Farris (Edgewood, MD/Joppatowne) was fifth in both the 55 meters and 200 meters last year, but is expected to be a top medal contender in each event.

Senior Dave Bresnahan (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) is the top seed in the mile at 4:28.25, while junior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) and first-year student Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) will be contenders in the 5000 meters.

For the women, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) is primed to win her third straight MAC indoor title in the 800 meters, and is poised to take gold in the mile after winning two straight MAC outdoor crowns in the 1500 meters.

Senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) is the defending indoor and outdoor champion in the 5000 meters, and is the top seed in the event by a spread of 23 seconds. She will also look to give the Blue Jays a one-two finish in the mile as the number-two seed behind Kulp.

Two years ago, the Blue Jays swept all four relays en route to their first MAC women's indoor championship, and this year Elizabethtown is the top seed in three of the events (distance medley, 4x800 and 4x400).

First-year student Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) will vie for a medal in the 55 hurdles, along with first-year student Lauren Riley (Sanatoga, PA/Pottsgrove) and senior Samantha Adams (Mickleton, NJ/Padua Academy) in the pole vault.

Junior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) is a nine-time MAC medalist in jumps, and will look for gold in all three jumping events (long, high and triple).

Action in 17 men's and 17 women's events will begin at 11:00 a.m., with eight schools in competition at the championships.
