Back to top 12/6/2008 Women's basketball defeats Haverford for fifth straight win, 59-53 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown 59, Haverford 53 HAVERFORD, Pa. --- Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) finished with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as Elizabethtown College picked up its fifth straight victory with a 59-53 win at Haverford College in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.Megan Strohman (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) added 11 points and a season-high five rebounds off the bench for the Blue Jays (5-3 overall), whose five-game win streak is their longest since posting nine consecutive victories during the 2003-04 season. Elizabethtown held on for the win despite going without a field goal for the final 8:18 of the game, scoring their final eight points from the foul line as the Fords (0-4 overall) used an 11-0 run to cut a 13-point deficit down to two. Quinn, whose double-double was her fourth of the season, also tied a career high with three blocked shots for Elizabethtown, which took the lead for good late in the first half and held it despite finishing at 32.8 percent (20-for-61) from the field and 4-for-21 from three-point range. Brittany Lattisaw led Haverford with 18 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute, while Kathleen Abels hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points along with six rebounds. After a back-and-forth first half, the Blue Jays scored seven of the last nine points to go to halftime with a 33-26 lead. Quinn led the Blue Jays in the opening half with eight points while Lattisaw paced the Fords with 10 points and five rebounds. Elizabethtown built its lead to double figures on several occasions in the second half, taking its largest lead of the day at 52-39 with 5:51 remaining. However, a layup by Lattisaw and three-pointers by Abels and Alejandra Alvarez brought the Fords to within 52-47 with 4:36 left. After nearly three minutes of scoreless basketball, Abels connected on another three-pointer to trim the Elizabethtown deficit to 52-50 with 1:46 left. However, Teanna Ziegler (Telford, PA/Souderton) hit two foul shots with 1:23 to go to push the Blue Jay lead to 54-50, and Quinn and Strohman combined to go 5-for-6 from the line in the final 42 seconds to put the game away. Haverford shot just 30 percent (18-for-60) from the field as a team, but kept the game close by going 6-for-17 from three-point range, including 5-for-14 in the second half. Elizabethtown missed all 10 of its three-point attempts in the second half, but went 10-for-12 from the foul line as a team. Stephanie Ellwood (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) tallied 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals and hit the go-ahead jumper with 4:10 to play to break a 49-49 tie. Elizabethtown led from the midway point of the first half until the Garnet (0-3 overall) tied the game on two foul shots by Melissa Grigsby with 4:31 to go. Quinn was named Most Valuable Player at Franklin & Marshall College's Terry Greene Tip-Off Tournament after averaging 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in victories over Manhattanville (69-67) and Shenandoah (64-53). She scored 26 points in the victory over Manhattanville, and recorded her third double-double of the season with 21 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high six steals against Shenandoah. Quinn also had 18 points and a career-high 14 boards in a 69-65 loss to Landmark Conference favorite Moravian on Wednesday night. For the week, she averaged 21.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while connecting on 10-of-24 shots from three-point range. The Blue Jays (2-3 overall) will host Swarthmore College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Thompson Gymnasium. A-131 Back to top 11/22/2008 Etown squeaks past Manhattanville, 69-67 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown 69, Manhattanville 67 LANCASTER, Pa. --- Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) sank two foul shots with 11 seconds remaining to give Elizabethtown College a 69-67 victory over Manhattanville College in the opening round of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Tournament at Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon.Romano's free throws broke a 67-67 tie and helped the Blue Jays (1-3 overall) advance to Sunday's championship game against Shenandoah University, which defeated the host Diplomats 74-61 in Saturday's other game. The Blue Jays led nearly the entire game, only to see the Valiants (1-2 overall) knot the contest on a layup by Carey Hickey with 13 seconds to go. Following Romano's foul shots, Manhattanville had a chance to tie the game but Romano came up with a steal as time ran out to give Elizabethtown the win. A-89 Back to top 11/19/2008 Women's basketball edged 69-65 by Moravian ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Moravian 69, Elizabethtown 65 Alyssa Bisci and Amy Heffner scored nine points apiece, and each converted critical three-point plays in the final five minutes for the Greyhounds (1-0 overall), who overcame a five-point halftime deficit to pick up the win over the Blue Jays (0-3 overall). Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) led the Blue Jays with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, while Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) finished with 10 points and a career-best 17 boards and Megan Strohman (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) came off the bench to drill three three-pointers and finish with 17 points.Moravian led 10-3 after 5 1/2 minutes of play, but the Blue Jays battled back to tie the score at 12-12 on a layup by Quinn with 10:38 left in the first half. The Blue Jays welcome back two starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team that finished 11-14 overall and 2-8 in conference play. Head coach Yvonne Kauffman begins her 39th season on the Elizabethtown sidelines with 640 career victories, third all-time among Division III coaches. Leading the Blue Jay offense will be senior guard Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor), who averaged 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while leading the team with 33 three-pointers and 42 steals. Senior point guard Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) averaged 6.2 points and 3.4 assists per game before missing the final six games with an injury, and senior forward Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) was a second-team All-Conference selection after finishing with 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Steph Saint-Aubin added 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and seven steals for the Seahawks (12-6 overall), who turned an eight-point second-half lead into a 21-point advantage before the Blue Jays (9-8 overall) rallied to within nine in the final minute. Senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) paced Elizabethtown with a team-high 20 points while junior Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals in 27 minutes off the bench. However, the Blue Jays shot just 30.5 percent (18-for-59) from the field as a team and could not capitalize on 25 Seahawk turnovers in suffering their third consecutive defeat. Ashley Brooks and Amy Reed added 11 points each for the Falcons (15-2 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth), who let a 16-point second-half lead dwindle to four before putting the game away with eight straight foul shots in the final 3:32. Jessica Nabholz posted game highs of 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Warriors (10-5 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth), who shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field as a team including 8-for-19 from three-point range. Senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) added 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) equaled her career high with 13 points as the Blue Jays (7-4 overall) forced the Lady Colonels (1-11 overall) into 27 turnovers and finished with a 49-36 edge in rebounding, including 24 offensive boards. In all, four players reached double figures for the Blue Jays, with senior Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) posting 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Reid finished with just six points, but pulled 10 of her 17 boards on the offensive glass to surpass her previous career best of 16 rebounds set against Widener on Feb. 11, 2006. She also set a career high with seven assists and matched her personal best of three steals for the Blue Jays. Sam Lynam led the Lady Colonels with 16 points and four rebounds, while Katie Cappelloni added 10 points and Lacey Andresen finished with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Blue Jays led by as many as 11 points in the first half, taking a 20-9 lead on a layup by first-year student Kaity Snyder (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) midway through the half. The Lady Colonels whittled the lead down to 28-27 on a fast-break bucket by Brittany Ely with 3:34 to go in the half, but the Blue Jays recovered to take a 36-31 lead to intermission. Hitz and Walton paced Elizabethtown with nine points apiece in the opening half, while Cappelloni and Lynam tallied eight each for Wilkes. Elizabethtown led by as many as 10 points in the second half at 60-50 with 6:09 to go, and Wilkes could get no closer than four in the final minute as the Blue Jays hit their final five free throws in the last 1:06 of the contest. For the contest, Elizabethtown shot 32.9 percent (23-for-70) from the field and 20-for-34 (58.5 percent) from the foul line, while Wilkes hit 21-of-49 (42.9 percent) from the floor and went 15-for-19 (78.9 percent) at the stripe. Jen Hnatuck also reached double figures with 12 points and five rebounds for the Eagles (7-5 overall), who withstood a pair of runs by the Blue Jays (6-4 overall) to come away with the victory. Junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) finished with team highs of 14 points and six rebounds for Elizabethtown, while junior Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) added a career-best 13 points to go with four steals. However, the Blue Jays were plagued by 31 turnovers and shot just 1-for-17 from three-point range as a team. However, Juniata responded with a basket by Kelly Rotan and a three-point play by Ashcraft to move ahead 52-45 with 3:06 to go. Elizabethtown would pull to as close as three points with 1:29 to go, but Juniata went 9-for-10 from the foul line in the final 45 seconds to seal the win. Keli Ward added 17 points and six rebounds for the Spartans (9-3 overall), who shot 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field as a team and outscored the Blue Jays (6-3 overall) by a 26-12 margin over the final 7 minutes, 22 seconds of the contest. A foul shot by Donna Figenshu would give the Spartans the lead for good at 43-42 with 7:22 left, and a three-pointer by Ward and a jumper by Daly extended the York lead to 48-42 with 6:37 left. Elizabethtown crept within four at 50-46 on a layup by Quinn with 5:40 to go, but Ward hit a layup and a three-pointer to push the York advantage to 55-46 at the 5:06 mark, and the Blue Jays would move no closer than six points the rest of the way. Senior Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) led the Blue Jays (6-2 overall) with a career-high 19 points to go with 15 rebounds as Elizabethtown won its fourth straight game and advanced to Saturday's championship game at 4:00 p.m. against the host Spartans, who defeated SUNY Oneonta 77-58 in Friday's other first-round contest. Quinn, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, broke a 61-61 tie on a three-pointer with 3:23 to play, and added another three with 2:45 to go to give Elizabethtown what to that points was its largest lead of the game at 67-61. Elizabethtown capped a 10-0 run as Hitz connected on a layup with 1:14 to play to give the Blue Jays a 71-61 lead, while McDaniel (4-5 overall) managed its lone points over the final five minutes on a basket by Whitney Snoops with 57 seconds to go. The teams played a back-and-forth first half, with six ties and neither team leading by more than five points en route to a 35-35 tie at intermission. Hitz led the Blue Jays with 11 points and seven rebounds while Robbin Gregg paced the Green Terror with eight points and four assists.
