Women's tennis finishes fall season at MASCAC championships

Alice Yu Finishes as Runner-Up at MASCAC Individual Championships

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team concluded action at the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Championships at Hempfield Sports Complex on Sunday.

Senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was the lone Blue Jay to advance to a championship match, falling to Xiaoqiao Zhang of Wilkes University 6-2, 6-2 in the finals at second singles after defeating Jess Smith of DeSales University 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) fell 6-4, 6-1 to Sarah Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley College in semifinal action at first singles, and junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) was defeated 6-2, 6-3 to eventual champion Alison McDonald of Wilkes in semifinal play at third singles.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell lost to eventual champions McDonald and Zhang of Wilkes in the semifinals by an 8-5 score at flight one, and at flight two Yu and first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) were defeated by Kelly Moll and Jan White of Lebanon Valley 8-5 in the semifinals.

Elizabethtown Advances Three Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams to MASCAC Semifinals

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team opened play at the two-day Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Championships at Hempfield Sports Complex on Saturday, and advanced three singles players and a pair of doubles teams to Sunday's semifinals.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) and junior Jessica Russell  (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) all moved into semifinal action along with the doubles teams of Russell and Swarr along with Yu and first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School).

At first singles, Swarr posted victories over Jillian Talarico of King's College 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round and fourth-seeded Jenny McKee of Alvernia College 5-7, 6-4, (11-9) in quarterfinal play.

Yu, the second seed at second singles, received an opening-round bye then swept Ashley Mangabang of Misericordia University 6-0, 6-0 in quarterfinal play. Russell, seeded third at third singles, also had an opening-round bye and went on to defeat Lindsey Leh of Eastern University 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Russell and Swarr were seeded second at flight one and received a first-round bye, then defeated Paisley Coats and Scarlette Rodriguez of Manhattanville College 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Yu and Poulle defeated Leh and Maria Shrefler of Eastern 8-4 in the first round, then upset third-seeded MaryKate Boylan and Christine Petrilla of DeSales University 8-3 in the quarterfinals.

In other singles action, Poulle competed at flight four and defeated Julia Romano of Manhattanville 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before being defeated by Katie Marstaller of Messiah College 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

First-year student Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) played at flight five and won 6-1, 7-5 over Annie Jaeger of Manhattanville in the first round, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to top-seeded Michelle Knight of Wilkes University in quarterfinal play.

At flight six, first-year student Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) won 6-4, 6-4 in the first round over Maria Cometa of King's, but lost 6-2, 6-0 to top-seeded Sara Wagner of Lebanon Valley College in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Oberg and first-year student Shannon Brown (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) played at flight three and defeated Elizabeth Stauffer and Gabrielle Toda of Albright College by default in the first round, but fell to the third-seeded team of Marstaller and Steph Knepper of Messiah by an 8-3 score in the quarterfinals.

Women's tennis to compete at MASCAC championships

Elizabethtown to Compete at MASCAC Women's Tennis Individual Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the 2008 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville.

Action at the two-day tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday with semifinals and finals in each of six singles flights and three doubles flights.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) will compete at flight one for the second straight year after going 3-2 in conference play during the fall season. Swarr, who was honored as Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year last year, was the conference runner up at flight three in 2006.

At flight two will be senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) who is the defending champion at flight three singles. She overwhelmed her conference competition during the regular season for the second straight year, finishing 5-0 in league play and losing just one game, after finishing 4-0 and dropping one game in 2007.

Junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) will play at flight three following a conference schedule in which she compiled a 4-1 record. She competed at flight four last season and saw action at flight six in her first year.

First-year students Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School), Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) and Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) will make their MASCAC debuts after playing at flights four, five and six, respectively, during the fall. Poulle went 2-3, Neill 1-1 and Oberg 2-2 during conference play.

In doubles, Russell and Swarr will play at flight one after going 5-0 in conference play and teaming to finish as runners-up at flight two last year. Russell was also the runner-up at flight three in 2006 while Swarr was the MASCAC champion at flight two as Yu's partner in 2006.

Yu and Poulle will play at flight two after going 4-1 during the fall, while Oberg will play with fellow first-year student Shannon Brown (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) at flight three following a 2-1 fall season.

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team defeated Arcadia University 6-3 in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in their final dual match of the fall season.

The Blue Jays (3-2 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) secured the third seed in next spring's conference tournament, where they will play second-seeded Messiah College. The Knights (9-4 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) are the fourth seed and will face top-seeded Lebanon Valley College.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won 6-0, 6-0 over Cory Mazen at first singles, senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) defeated Sarah Lapp 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Megan Gillespie at third singles, and first-year student Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) won 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles over Danielle Klim.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell won 8-1 at flight one over Lapp and Irina Samson, and Yu teamed with first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) for an 8-6 win over Mazen and Kate Wiseman at flight two.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College picked up an 8-1 victory over Lycoming College in Commonwealth Conference women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (2-2 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) won five of six singles matches and all three doubles pro sets to claim the win over the Warriors (2-6 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth).

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Aimee Snyder 6-0, 6-3 at first singles, senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles over Rebecca Reynolds, and at third singles junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) downed Erica Niemann 6-0, 6-1.

First-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) won 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles over Kelly Drinkard, and first-year student Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) defeated Abigail Petritsch 6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles.

READING, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (1-2 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) dropped just 11 games between singles and doubles to pick up the victory over the Lions (1-5 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth).

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won by default over Marissa Cooperman at first singles, senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) defeated Lisa Archibald 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, and junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at third singles over Stacy Bampton.

At fourth singles, first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Brittany Herbert, sophomore Angela Cairns (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Ashley Woodcock at fifth singles, and at sixth singles first-year student Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) won 6-1, 6-1 over Amanda Cain.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Lebanon Valley College won five of six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (0-2 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) picked up their lone singles win from senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central), who shut out Kelly Moll 6-0, 6-0 at flight two, but the Dutchmen (5-1 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) won four of the other five singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the team of juniors Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) posted an 8-1 win over Sarah Grodzinski and Shayna Heintzelman at flight one.

Messiah edges Etown in women's tennis, 5-4

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Visiting Messiah College won a third-set tiebreaker in the final singles match to come away with a 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons' Christie McGinley won 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at first singles over junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) to give the Falcons (1-1 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) the victory over the Blue Jays (0-1 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth).

Senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) became the fourth player in program history to reach 100 combined victories, as she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Stacey Clark at second singles, and teamed with first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) for an 8-5 win over Annie Gotchel and Sarah Thow at second doubles.

For her career, Yu has a 55-16 record in singles and a 45-20 record in doubles play, as she joins Heather Lander (131 wins), Kristy Trimbey (112 wins) and Stacy Shapiro (108 wins) in the 100-win club at Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays' other singles win came from junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) at third singles, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gotchel. She also teamed with Swarr to defeat McGinley and Clark by an 8-1 score at first doubles.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team lost to Methodist College 5-1 in an NCAA Division III first-round match on Friday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington.

The Blue Jays, making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament, finished the season with a 13-4 record while the Monarchs (21-3 overall) advanced to Saturday's second-round action against host Mary Washington.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A sweep of all six singles matches gave Elizabethtown College a 7-2 victory over Wilkes University in non-conference women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (8-2 overall) snapped a 12-match winning streak for the Lady Colonels (14-2 overall), whose only other loss came to Division II Bloomsburg University back on Sept. 13. The starting lineup for Wilkes entered the day with a combined singles record of 90-13 on the season.

Sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Alison McDonald at first singles, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) came back to defeat Xiaoqiao Zhang 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at flight two, and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) cruised past Kristin Wilt 6-1, 6-0 at flight three for her 12th straight win.

First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Victoria Bybel at fourth singles, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) beat Michelle Knight 7-5, 6-4 at flight five, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) downed Katie Buckley, who was 16-0 on the season, by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) final at sixth singles.

In doubles, Albers and Fisher earned the lone win with a 9-7 victory over Knight and Buckley at flight three.

Women's Tennis to Play Methodist in NCAA Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will face Methodist College in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Blue Jays (13-3 overall) earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA team championships with a 5-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference finals on April 20.

The Monarchs (20-3 overall) won the USA South Conference championship for the eighth straight season after finishing the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record in league play.

The winner of Friday's match will play the host Eagles, ranked seventh in the nation, in a second-round match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. In the other half of the regional bracket, College of New Jersey will face the winner of Friday's other first-round contest between Johns Hopkins University and Cabrini College.

Saturday's winners will meet for the regional title on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the championship tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. from May 13-18.

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- For the first time in program history, the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will compete in the NCAA Division III team tournament after the Blue Jays defeated Lebanon Valley College 5-0 in the Commonwealth Conference finals at the Hempfield Sports Complex on Sunday morning.

The Blue Jays (13-3 overall) won their third Commonwealth Conference title in the last four seasons by sweeping doubles and winning two singles matches to clinch the championship, the fifth conference title in program history.

First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) gave the Blue Jays their decisive fifth point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sammy Burkey at fourth singles, after tournament MVP Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) swept Kelly Moll 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.

Elizabethtown's doubles wins came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Yu over Sarah Grodzinski and Shayna Heintzelman 8-4 at flight one, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) by an 8-6 score over Jan White and Leslie Sabas at flight two, and Albers and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) at flight three over Moll and Charissa Nordall by an 8-4 score.

With the victory, the Blue Jays will participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament beginning Thursday, May 1 at a site and time to be determined.

Women's tennis prepares for Commonwealth Conference team tournament

Elizabethtown College Men's and Women's Tennis Teams to Compete in Commonwealth Playoffs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's tennis teams will participate in the Commonwealth Conference team tournament this weekend at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville.

The Blue Jay women (12-3 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) are the top seed and will play in the championship match on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Saturday's first-round match between third-seeded Messiah College and second-seeded Lebanon Valley College.

The Blue Jay men (7-5 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) will face Lebanon Valley in a first-round match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with the winner to play Messiah on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the championship match.

The Commonwealth Conference men's and women's champions will each receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins May 2.

Elizabethtown's women will look for its third Commonwealth Conference championship in the last four years, having won in both 2004 and 2005. The Blue Jays lost 5-4 to Moravian College in last year's finals, in the first year that the conference earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) leads the Blue Jays in victories with a 17-3 mark, including a 14-1 record in dual matches. She ranks fifth in program history with 52 career singles victories, and was the MAC individual champion at #3 singles in the fall.

Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) is 12-8 overall at #2 singles, including a 10-5 record in dual matches, and sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year after going 9-9 overall and 8-7 in dual matches at #1 singles.

Also reaching double figures in victories were sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) and first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), each finishing with an 11-4 overall record. First-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) joined the team for the spring portion of the schedule and went 6-3 at #6 singles.

In doubles, Smith and Yu teamed to go 11-6 overall and 10-4 at #1 doubles, and Swarr and Russell finished with a 14-3 overall record and 12-2 at #2 doubles. Albers and Fisher rolled to a 9-1 mark at #3 doubles for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jay men finished as runner-up to Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference finals last season, after claiming the team title in 2005.

Sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) paces the Blue Jays with an 11-7 singles record, including an 8-4 mark at #1 singles. Junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) added five wins at #2 singles and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) finished 9-7 overall and 8-4 in dual matches, primarily at #3 singles.

First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) chipped in with six victories while playing at #4 singles, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) posted an even 9-9 record as the team's #5 player. First-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) cracked the lineup late in the season and finished 4-2 at #6 singles.

All three Blue Jay doubles teams finished with winning records, as Kirkhoff and Voshell went 6-5 at #1 doubles, Metz and Walker finished 9-7 overall and 8-3 at #2 doubles, and senior Jim Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) teamed with sophomore Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) to go 7-3 at #3 doubles.

At first singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Amanda Fontana 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) downed Maggie Wolenter 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Lauren Perow at third singles.

At first singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won 6-1, 6-1 over Barbora Hnizda, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) earned her 40th career singles win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Becky Matlack at second singles, and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) shut out Samm Rasnake 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.

SCRANTON, Pa. --- Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) became the fifth player in Elizabethtown College women's tennis history to record 50 career singles victories as the Blue Jays defeated the University of Scranton 7-2 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

Yu downed Danielle Red 6-0, 6-3 at third singles to improve her career mark to 50-15, joining Heather Lander '07 (68-9), Jodi Weidman '91 (57-11), Kristy Trimbey '06 (55-12) and Stacy Shapiro '07 (54-25) in the 50-win club at Elizabethtown.

Yu, who won the Middle Atlantic Conference third singles title in the fall, is 15-2 on the season and 12-0 in dual matches and has won 14 consecutive matches, losing just one set during the streak.

The Blue Jays (10-2 overall) won their fifth straight match by winning four singles matches and all three doubles pro sets against the Lady Royals (5-4 overall).

CARLISLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match with a 5-3 win at Dickinson College in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (9-2 overall) won three of the five singles matches played to conclusion and took two out of three doubles pro sets aaginst the Red Devils (6-5 overall).

Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) won 7-5, 7-5 at second singles over Joelle Nitzberg, junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) downed Sarah Woodward 6-3, 6-0 at third singles for her 49th career singles victory, and first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) won 6-0, 6-4 at fourth singles over Caitlin McGovern.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip with a 6-3 victory over the Catholic University of America on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (7-2 overall) split three singles matches with the Cardinals (1-4 overall), but swept all three doubles matches to earn the victory.

Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) improved to 12-2 on the season and 47-15 in her career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Corinne Alcorn at third singles, her 11th consecutive victory in singles dating back to last fall.

Also picking up singles wins were first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), who downed Caitlin Dunn 7-5, 6-3 at fourth singles, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt), who swept Julia Cotrone 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

The doubles wins came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Yu over Rachel Tenuta and Emily McGlynn by an 8-3 score at flight one, while sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) defeated Alcorn and Dunn 8-2 at flight two, and Albers and Fisher downed Mary Wargo and Cotrone 8-3 at flight three.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team defeated Tri-State University 8-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improved to 6-2 overall with the win while the Thunder dropped to 2-1 with the loss.

Singles victories for the Blue Jays came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), who defeated Amanda Steiner 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 (tiebreaker) at second singles, along with junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) who breezed past Stephanie Steiner 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.

At fourth singles, first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) won 6-0, 6-1 over Kara Kauffman, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Dana Dunham at fifth singles, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) whitewashed Jennifer Wall 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

In doubles, Smith and Yu won 8-1 over Amber Crosby and Stephanie Steiner at flight one, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Russell bested Amanda Steiner and Kauffman 8-4 at flight two, and Albers and Fisher downed Dunham and Wall 8-5 at flight three.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- In a match suspended by rain on Tuesday and completed Wednesday morning, the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team lost to Meredith College 5-4 in non-conference action.

The teams were tied 4-4 when rain washed out play at fourth singles, and Meredith's Amanda Bitler finished off action with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win over Elizabethtown first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands).

Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was the lone singles winner for the Blue Jays, picking up a 6-0, 6-7 (8-6), 10-7 tiebreaker victory over Kathryn Maples at third singles.

The Avenging Angels (5-2 overall) won five singles matches, including three via the 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set, while also winning three sets via conventional tiebreaker.

In doubles, the Blue Jays (5-2 overall) swept all three flights, as Yu teamed with senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) for an 8-4 win over Maples and Sydney Williford at flight one, sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) edged Meredith Roberson and Morgan Martin 9-8 (7-2) at flight two, and Albers teamed with first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) for an 8-6 win over Bitler and Caitlin Dillon at flight three.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 9-0 win over Lynchburg College on Monday morning. The Blue Jays (5-1 overall) won all six singles matches in straight sets over the Hornets (0-2 overall).

At first singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Elizabeth Eckert 6-1, 6-2, while senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at second singles over Jessica Moore and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles over Krysten Bishop.

First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) defeated Amanda Dennis 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) downed Bridney Tune 6-1, 6-3 at fifth singles and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) won at sixth singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score over Rachel Moore.

In doubles, Smith and Yu blanked Eckert and Bishop 8-0 at flight one, Swarr and Russell defeated Jessica Moore and Dennis 8-3 at flight two, and Albers and Fisher teamed for an 8-1 win over Tune and Rachel Moore at flight three.
