Back to top 9/20/2008 Dr. Lemley Awarded National Science Foundation grant Back to top 6/2/2008 Laura Getz ('08) and Dr. Roy help bring music to school in South Africa During Spring Break, Laura Getz (music and psychology double major), Dr. Michael Roy (Assistant Professor of Psychology), Dr. Karendra Devroop (Assistant Professor of Music) and Kim Sandifer (senior music education student), spent the week teaching students in sectionals and full band settings. The team focused on the fundamentals of instrumental performance, reading music and functioning cohesively in an ensemble setting. At the end of the week, students performed a concert of several short exercises and one grade level concert band arrangement for an audience of approximately 1400 people that included students, faculty, education and government officials and community leaders. The team partnered with faculty from two universities in South Africa, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of South Africa. The project was sponsored by a CISP grant awarded to Dr. Devroop and Dr. Roy.
Back to top 6/2/2008 Students present research at Association for Psychological Science In May, students and faculty traveled to Chicago for the Annual Meeting of the Association for Psychological Science. Students presented their independent research projects, many of which they conducted to earn Senior Honors in the Discipline. For more information and pictures from the conference, click here. Back to top 6/2/2008 Students and faculty present at Eastern Psychological Association Twenty students and faculty traveled to Boston to participate in the Annual Meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association. Ten students presented their research at the meeting. Students and faculty also took advantage of the (relatively) nice weather and spent some time exploring Boston. Back to top 6/2/2008 Dr. Roy publishes research on time estimation Dr. Michael Roy recently published work examining people's ability to estimate how long a task takes to complete. Regardless of whether people are predicting how long something will take, or recalling how a task took in the past, people tend to overestimate the duration of short tasks and underestimate the duration of long tasks. This work, completed with Dr. Nicholas Chrstenfeld of University of California- San Diego, was published in February 2008 in the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. Back to top 6/2/2008 Dr. Chris Miller ('73) receives Outstanding Alumni Award As part of the 2007 Homecoming celebration, the Psychology department honored Dr. Chris Miller (Class of 1973) with the Outstanding Alumni Award. Dr. Miller is the President and Founder of Innovation Focus, a Lancaster-based firm specializing in market research, product development, customer interaction and strategic planning. The Outstanding Alumni Award is given periodically to alumni of the department who have made a substantial contribution to their profession. Back to top 6/2/2008 Patrick Smith ('96) speaks with students about a career in neuroscience In conjunction with homecoming, the Psych Department and Psych Club sponsored an informal career talk by Dr. Patrick Smith (Etown class of 1996). A neuroscience professor at Florida Southern University, Dr. Smith discussed with students how his professors in the Psychology department at Etown and his experiential research experiences helped him to gain admission to graduate school. |
