Back to top 4/10/2008 Daniel McGuigan's Swimming Record McGuigan finished second in the 200 breaststroke and third as part of the 400 medley relay as the Blue Jays finished fifth at the MAC swimming championships in February. He also earned two fourth-place relay finishes and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the championships. During the regular season, McGuigan claimed 18 individual top-three finishes during dual meets and swam in 12 relay that finished either first or second. In his career, he earned two medals at the MAC championships and was recognized as second-team All-Conference 11 times (four individual, seven relays). Outside swimming, he has done field work and student teaching in classrooms ranging from preschool to middle school. McGuigan is also a member of the Best Buddies program and is a swim coach and lifeguard at the Phoenixville Area YMCA. Academically, McGuigan has a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average as an elementary/special education major at Elizabethtown. Back to top 4/10/2008 Joe Hudzick, recipient of the 2008 NACUFS Award Congratulations to Joe Hudzick, recipient of the 2008 National Association of College and University Food Services Student Employee of the Year award. Joe was chosen among all student employee nominations from the Mid-Atlantic Region, comprised of colleges and universities from seven states, for his dedication and service to the Dining Services Department during his years of employment. Nominated by Eric Turzai, director of Dining Services, Joe met all of the criteria necessary for the award, including quality of work, initiative in his position as student manager, reliability, and contribution to the department overall. Joe has received a scholarship from the region and is now eligible for the NACUFS National Student Employee of the Year award and scholarship, to be presented at the national conference in July. Back to top 3/27/2008 Registration Schedule for Education courses Registration for Education Courses Back to top 3/27/2008 Dr. Elizabeth Coyle presents paper at AERA Elizabeth Coyle presents a paper titled "The Role of School and Community Culture on Bullying Prevention Program Implementation" on March 26, 2008 at the American Educational Research Association Conference in New York City. The paper reports on the findings of a study that explored school culture characteristics that sustained implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in a rural Pennsylvania middle school. Back to top 3/27/2008 Dr. Mimi Staulters travels to Jamaica to complete research study Dr. Mimi L. Staulters, Elizabethtown College, and Dr. Stacy Williams, University at Albany, traveled to the inner region of Jamaica during the week of March 1- 8, 2008 to complete their research on rural Jamaican educators’ practices for teaching literacy and mathematics. Drs Staulters and Williams culminated a project which focused on providing professional development and materials for research evidenced instructional and assessment practices to Jamaican educators who are facing tremendous challenges to teach the academically diverse population of students who are now attending their schools. The primary purpose of this trip was to re-survey educators and to conduct observations and interviews to determine if changes in instruction and assessment practices resulted from the professional development provided during the summer of 2007. Drs Staulters and Williams were very excited to observe teachers and students utilizing so many of the instructional techniques and materials they had presented to the schools. Back to top 3/18/2008 May Term Offered The Education Department is offering the following course during the May Term: ESL: Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in the Classroom The course will be taught by Mrs. Eugenia Krimmel and will be held 9:30 am – 12:30 pm in Nicarry 104. The May Term runs from May 12 thru May 30th (no class on May 26th) Registration for May Term will take place starting April 21st. Please come to Nicarry 143 to register.Back to top 3/11/2008 Super Science Saturday The Elizabethtown College Student Chapter of the National Science Teachers Association will be conducting the first Super Science Saturday on Saturday, March 29, 2008 between 9:00-12:30 in Nicarry Hall. Come, observe, and participate with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders of the Elizabethtown School District and their parents as they engage in hands-on activities.
