ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team opened play at the two-day Halloween Classic on Friday, falling 3-1 to 24th-ranked Eastern University in the tournament opener and 3-1 to Washington & Jefferson College later in the evening.

Against Eastern (28-1 overall), the Blue Jays were defeated 25-17, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-14. Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) paced the Blue Jays with 14 kills and a match-high 18 digs, while junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) added eight kills.

Sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) had a team-high 14 assists while first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) joined Tanner in double figures in digs with 12.

In the loss to Washington & Jefferson (16-11 overall), the Blue Jays were defeated by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-22. Tanner finished with 12 kills and 12 digs while sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely) had 11 kills and Deats 10 kills and six blocks.

Burkholder led Elizabethtown (15-17 overall) with 36 assists, while sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) had 20 digs and Weaver added 15.

Women's soccer clinches playoff berth with 5-1 win over LVC

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) tallied two goals and an assist as Elizabethtown College defeated Lebanon Valley College 5-1 in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field.

Russo scored the game's first goal at 11:30 and capped the scoring at 46:43 as the Blue Jays (12-4-2 overall, 3-1-1 Commonwealth) scored four times into the wind in the first half en route to the win and a berth in next week's conference playoffs.

Senior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored for the fifth straight game for the Blue Jays, while senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) and sophomore Elyse Carabello (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) also netted goals.

Russo opened the scoring as she put home a corner kick by sophomore Katelyn Roderick (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) at 11:30, and exactly seven minutes later Dotterer scored her team-high 13th goal of the year by depositing a cross from sophomore Mallory Murphy (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville).

Elizabethtown used a fortunate bounce to take a 3-0 lead at 26:49, as Russo's shot toward an open net was cleared off the line by a Lebanon Valley defender, only to carom off Geiger into the net for her first goal of the season.

The Dutchmen (9-7-2 overall, 2-4-0 Commonwealth) got on the board just under two minutes later at 28:44 as Christine Fraser converted a misplay into her third goal of the year.

The Blue Jays responded at 33:13 as Carabello scored her second goal of the season off a cross from sophomore Ellen Parr (Columbia, MD/Atholton) to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Russo closed the scoring just 1:43 into the second half as Dotterer's initial shot trickled away from the Dutchmen keeper, and she knocked the loose ball home for her seventh goal of the season.

Elizabethtown finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks over Lebanon Valley.

Senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) played just under 70 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays and made two saves, while Alyson Reitmeyer finished with six stops for the Dutchmen.

Men's soccer wins fourth straight, 1-0 at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- A goal in the 17th minute by senior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) stood as the game-winner as Elizabethtown College defeated Susquehanna University 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night.

Diller, who scored for the second straight game, dodged the Susquehanna keeper and scored at 16:33 as the Blue Jays (7-8-3 overall) won their season-high fourth straight game and improved to 49-0-1 all-time against the Crusaders (10-6-1 overall).

Sophomore Taylor Helsel (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) assisted on Diller's goal, and the defense held up as Susquehanna took eight of their 14 shots in the second half.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) earned his sixth shutout of the season by making five saves for the Blue Jays, while B.J. Merriam finished with six stops for the Crusaders.

Volleyball defeated 3-1 by Lebanon Valley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- In a showdown of the top two teams in the Commonwealth Conference, Lebanon Valley College defeated Elizabethtown College 3-1 in volleyball action at Thompson Gymnasium on Wednesday night, by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 21-25 and 26-24.

With the win, the Flying Dutchmen (29-2 overall, 6-0 Commonwealth) will have the top seed in next week's conference playoffs. The Blue Jays (15-15 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth) are the second seed and will host third seed Widener University next Wednesday night in the conference semifinals.

Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) paced the Blue Jays with 17 kills and 14 digs, while junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) had 13 kills without an error in 30 attacks, along with five blocks.

Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) paced the Blue Jays with 25 assists, while sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had a team-high 17 digs followed by sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) with 15 digs.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- Senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored the winning goal with 6:35 left in the second half as 13th-ranked Elizabethtown College edged Susquehanna University 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon.

Miles scored her 12th goal of the season assisted by senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) as the Blue Jays (16-3 overall) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to the Crusaders (8-9 overall).

Susquehanna took a 1-0 lead at 14:33 when Kristen Epting scored off an assist by Laurel Monaghan, but Elizabethtown knotted the score with 12:59 left in the second half as sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) fired home her team-high 16th goal of the season with an assist going to senior Kelsey Diehl (North East, MD/Rising Sun)

The Blue Jays finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots over the Crusaders, and posted a 13-2 edge in penalty corners.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) finished with one save in goal to earn the win for the Blue Jays, while Erin Ferguson made eight stops for the Crusaders.

Field hockey continues to be ranked 13th in Division III poll

Field Hockey Continues 13th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- For the third week in a row, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team is ranked 13th in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (15-3 overall) lost 3-1 to then fourth-ranked Messiah College on Wednesday, but bounced back for a 4-1 victory at Kean University on Saturday.

Bowdoin College regained the top spot in this week's poll, followed by Messiah, Ursinus College, Tufts University and previously top-ranked College of New Jersey.

The Blue Jays conclude their regular season on Saturday at Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference matchup.

Brooke Dotterer named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

Dotterer Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior forward Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in women's soccer, the conference office announced for the week ending Oct. 25. It is the third time this season that Dotterer has been honored by the conference.

Dotterer scored three goals and added an assist as the Blue Jays picked up wins over Montclair State (2-0) and Albright (3-0) last week. She assisted on the go-ahead goal and added an insurance tally in the win over Montclair State, and had two second-half goals in the victory against Albright.

Dotterer has scored goals in four consecutive matches, accumulating five goals and an assist during the streak. She leads the team with 12 goals and six assists for 30 points in 17 matches this season.

Elizabethtown (11-4-2 overall, 2-1-1 Commonwealth) hosts Lebanon Valley College in a key conference showdown on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.

READING, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout victory at Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday night.

Sophomore Brian Gallagher (Harrisburg, PA/Middletown) and senior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) scored goals for the Blue Jays (6-8-2 overall, 2-3-0 Commonwealth), who won their third straight match.

Gallagher scored his first career goal at 26:44 as he put home his own rebound, and Diller tallied his fourth goal of the season at 70:26 on a free kick from 25 yards.

The Blue Jays finished with a 14-6 edge in shots over the Lions (4-10-0 overall, 0-4-0 Commonwealth), who had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) came up with two saves in his fifth shutout of the season for the Blue Jays, while Wendell Hannaford made seven stops for the Lions.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College picked up a pair of victories against former Commonwealth Conference rivals in volleyball action at Moravian College on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays defeated the host Greyhounds 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-6) and downed Susquehanna University 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19).

In the win over Moravian, junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) became the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills as she finished with a team-high 11 kills to go with 15 digs.

Junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) and sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely) each added eight kills, with Deats also chipping in with team highs of three aces and five blocks.

Sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) led the Blue Jays with 25 assists and added 11 digs, while first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) paced the team with 26 digs.

Against Susquehanna, Tanner again posted 11 kills to increase her career total to 1,020 kills, while Deats and Northway added nine kills each. Burkholder paced Elizabethtown with 29 assists to go with 17 digs, and sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) finished with a team-best 26 digs.

Women's soccer picks up 3-0 win at Albright

READING, Pa. --- Senior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored two second-half goals as Elizabethtown College defeated Albright College 3-0 in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action at Shirk Stadium on Saturday evening.

Dotterer, who has scored goals in four consecutive games, tallied in the 60th and 73rd minutes for the Blue Jays (11-4-2 overall, 2-1-1 Commonwealth), who are unbeaten in their last eight road games (six wins, two ties).

Senior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) opened the scoring for the Blue Jays with her fifth goal of the season at 24:42 on an assist from senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown).

Dotterer put home a rebound at 59:22 to extend the Elizabethtown lead to 2-0, then scored her 12th goal of the season at 72:07 with assists to Russo and sophomore Ellen Parr (Columbia, MD/Atholton).

The Blue Jay defense stifled the attack of the Lions (7-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 Commonwealth), holding Albright to just one shot in the 16th minute of action while Elizabethtown's offense produced 22 shots. The Blue Jays also dominated in corner kicks by a 16-0 margin.

Senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) earned her second straight shutout and eighth of the season without making a save for Elizabethtown, while Keeley Peltz (nine saves) and Olivia Giuliano (zero saves) saw time in net for Albright.

LANCASTER, Pa. --- Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) finished first overall as Elizabethtown College's women's cross country team won the Battle for the Buggy at Lancaster County Central Park on Saturday.

Kulp was clocked in 15:10.65 over the 4,000-meter course to finish just over nine seconds ahead of runner-up Jennifer Kooser of Messiah College. The two are expected to vie for the individual title when the course hosts the Middle Atlantic Conference championship next Saturday.

As a team, Elizabethtown amassed 45 points to finish ahead of runner-up Bloomsburg University (83 points) and third-place Christopher Newport University (107 points), with Misericordia University taking fourth with 110 points in the field of 15 teams and 107 runners.

Junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) took seventh in a time of 15:43.08, with sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) taking ninth in 15:52.58 and senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) in 12th at 16:09.90.

Sophomore Teresa Beshore (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) was the fifth Blue Jay to score as she finished in 19th place with a time of 16:32.58.

Also competing in the meet was two-time MAC individual champion and 2007 All-American Erin Fisher, a 2008 Elizabethtown graduate who finished 10th with a time of 15:58.52.

LANCASTER, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's cross country team won the Battle for the Buggy at Lancaster County Central Park on Saturday, placing seven runners among the top 14 finishers to capture the team title.

Elizabethtown's team score of 35 points easily outranked runner-up Bloomsburg University (74 points) and third-place Shippensburg University (90 points) in the field of 17 teams and 113 runners.

Senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) took fourth overall with a time of 20:34.62 over the slightly less than 6,000-meter course, which will host the Middle Atlantic Conference championships next weekend.

First-year student Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) followed in seventh place (20:54.35) with sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) in eighth (20:54.83) and first-year student Russell Speiden (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) coming home in tenth place (20:58.10).

Other top performers for the Blue Jays were senior Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) in 11th place (20:58.59), senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) taking 12th place (21:01.68) and first-year student Colby Miller (Oak Hill, VA/Flint Hill School) in 14th with a time of 21:07.27.

The overall race winner was 2006 Elizabethtown graduate Greg Wetzel, who crossed the line in a time of 20:00.70. Fellow Blue Jay alum Nate Moore (20:39.71, fifth) also turned in top-10 performances.

Late flurry gives field hockey 4-1 win at Kean

UNION, N.J. --- Elizabethtown College scored three goals in a span of 89 seconds late in the second half as the 13th-ranked Blue Jays defeated Kean University 4-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored the tiebreaking goal with 7:56 remaining and added an insurance goal with 6:27 to play as the Blue Jays (15-3 overall) held off the Cougars (13-3 overall).

Seniors Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) also scored for the Blue Jays, who managed just 11 shots on the Cougar goal but put four into the net.

Vogel opened the scoring at 11:13 with her second goal of the season off a penalty corner by Angstadt, but Kean tied the score less than two minutes later as Brittany Gibbs was set up by Stephanie Cirino at 12:48.

The match remained tied until Miles netted the go-ahead goal off an assist by junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) with 7:56 left. Angstadt followed just 43 seconds later with her eighth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Miles closed the scoring with her second of the day and 11th of the season 46 seconds after Angstadt's goal, with an assist to sophomore Meg Cassels (Downingtown, PA/Great Valley).

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) earned the victory with three saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Ashlie Berghold finished with three stops for the Cougars.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- First-year student Geoff Cochrane (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) scored his first career goal on a goalmouth scramble with 2:58 remaining as Elizabethtown College edged Juniata College 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Thursday night at Ira R. Herr Field.

Cochrane's goal came on a corner kick by sophomore Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic) and allowed the Blue Jays (5-8-2 overall) to come away with the victory after the Eagles (5-10-1 overall) had tied the game on a goal by Bryan Hess with 13:40 left.

Elizabethtown had taken a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into the match as sophomore  Cameron Gettel (Rehrersburg, PA/Tulpehocken) scored his third goal of the season, and the lead held up until Hess tallied his fourth of the year with an assist to Fred McNeal.

The Blue Jays finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks over the Eagles.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) tallied three saves in goal for Elizabethtown, and Ted Sonneborn made four stops for Juniata.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. --- A pair of second-half goals lifted Elizabethtown College to a 2-0 victory at Montclair State University in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) assisted on the tiebreaking goal early in the second half, and tallied an insurance goal with 6:39 remaining for the Blue Jays (10-4-2 overall), who have reached double figures in victories for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons.

Sophomore Mallory Murphy (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead 8:58 into the second half when she deposited the rebound of a shot by Dotterer for her third goal of the season.

Dotterer extended the Elizabethtown lead to 2-0 at 83:21 on her team-best 10th goal of the season off an assist from senior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park).

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Two second-half goals from Kourtney Ehly helped fourth-ranked Messiah College defeated 13th-ranked Elizabethtown College 3-1 in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Ehly scored 8:30 into the second half and added an insurance tally with 1:48 to play for the Falcons (11-1 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth), who finished with a 26-4 edge in shots and 13-3 advantage in penalty corners over the Blue Jays (14-3 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth).

Messiah took a 1-0 lead at 21:48 as Katie Love scored off an assist by Jenna Max, and extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second half as Ehly scored her first goal of the day off an assist by Julie Barton.

The Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with 17:37 to play when sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored her team-high 15th goal of the season, but Ehly closed out the scoring late to finish off the Messiah victory.

READING, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Albright College 3-0 in Commonwealth Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15.

The Blue Jays (13-14 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) extended their regular-season conference winning streak to 10 matches dating to the 2006 season.

Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) posted a match-high 12 kills to increase her career total to 998 kills, just two shy of becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.

Sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) led the Blue Jays with 17 assists, while first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) posted a team-high 16 digs.

Christina Yatron led the Lions (5-26 overall, 1-4 Commonwealth) with nine kills, while Lauren Higgins had 23 assists and Jennifer Lynch led all players with 17 digs.

Field Hockey Remains 13th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team remained 13th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (14-2 overall) earned victories over Immaculata University (7-1) and Widener University (6-2) last week, and are appearing in the rankings for the seventh consecutive week.

The College of New Jersey climbed into the top spot in this week's poll, as previously top-ranked Bowdoin College slipped to second following their first loss of the season. Ursinus College, Messiah College and Tufts University round out the top five.

Elizabethtown will play at Messiah on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in a Commonwealth Conference showdown.

Women's tennis finishes fall season at MASCAC championships

Alice Yu Finishes as Runner-Up at MASCAC Individual Championships

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team concluded action at the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Championships at Hempfield Sports Complex on Sunday.

Senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was the lone Blue Jay to advance to a championship match, falling to Xiaoqiao Zhang of Wilkes University 6-2, 6-2 in the finals at second singles after defeating Jess Smith of DeSales University 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) fell 6-4, 6-1 to Sarah Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley College in semifinal action at first singles, and junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) was defeated 6-2, 6-3 to eventual champion Alison McDonald of Wilkes in semifinal play at third singles.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell lost to eventual champions McDonald and Zhang of Wilkes in the semifinals by an 8-5 score at flight one, and at flight two Yu and first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) were defeated by Kelly Moll and Jan White of Lebanon Valley 8-5 in the semifinals.

Elizabethtown Advances Three Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams to MASCAC Semifinals

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team opened play at the two-day Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Championships at Hempfield Sports Complex on Saturday, and advanced three singles players and a pair of doubles teams to Sunday's semifinals.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) and junior Jessica Russell  (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) all moved into semifinal action along with the doubles teams of Russell and Swarr along with Yu and first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School).

At first singles, Swarr posted victories over Jillian Talarico of King's College 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round and fourth-seeded Jenny McKee of Alvernia College 5-7, 6-4, (11-9) in quarterfinal play.

Yu, the second seed at second singles, received an opening-round bye then swept Ashley Mangabang of Misericordia University 6-0, 6-0 in quarterfinal play. Russell, seeded third at third singles, also had an opening-round bye and went on to defeat Lindsey Leh of Eastern University 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Russell and Swarr were seeded second at flight one and received a first-round bye, then defeated Paisley Coats and Scarlette Rodriguez of Manhattanville College 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Yu and Poulle defeated Leh and Maria Shrefler of Eastern 8-4 in the first round, then upset third-seeded MaryKate Boylan and Christine Petrilla of DeSales University 8-3 in the quarterfinals.

In other singles action, Poulle competed at flight four and defeated Julia Romano of Manhattanville 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before being defeated by Katie Marstaller of Messiah College 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

First-year student Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) played at flight five and won 6-1, 7-5 over Annie Jaeger of Manhattanville in the first round, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to top-seeded Michelle Knight of Wilkes University in quarterfinal play.

At flight six, first-year student Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) won 6-4, 6-4 in the first round over Maria Cometa of King's, but lost 6-2, 6-0 to top-seeded Sara Wagner of Lebanon Valley College in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Oberg and first-year student Shannon Brown (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) played at flight three and defeated Elizabeth Stauffer and Gabrielle Toda of Albright College by default in the first round, but fell to the third-seeded team of Marstaller and Steph Knepper of Messiah by an 8-3 score in the quarterfinals.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Sophomores Cameron Gettel (Rehrersburg, PA/Tulpehocken) and Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic) scored second-half goals as Elizabethtown College defeated Arcadia University 2-0 in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field.

Gettel volleyed home a pass from senior Dan Flaherty (West Chester, PA/Henderson) from close range at 47:31 to give the Blue Jays (4-8-2 overall, 1-3-0 Commonwealth) the lead, and Filewicz converted on a spectacular individual effort at 76:21 to seal the victory for Elizabethtown, which outshot Arcadia (5-10-0 overall, 0-3-0 Commonwealth) by an 18-4 margin.

With the Blue Jays protecting the lead following Gettel's goal, Filewicz gained possession 10 yards on the defensive side of midfield and outran two Knight defenders down the right sideline to the edge of the goal area. As a third Arcadia defender challenged, Filewicz blasted a shot to the upper 90 on the short side to the delight of the large Homecoming crowd.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with three saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season for the Blue Jays, while Jeff Kratohwill made seven stops for the Knights.

Field hockey nets four in second half to down Widener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A four-goal outburst over a span over 15 minutes, 14 seconds midway through the second half helped 13th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeat Widener University 6-2 in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) tallied a pair of goals and added an assist, while senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) scored twice in the final 10 minutes for the Blue Jays (14-2 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth), who won their sixth consecutive game.

Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead just 4:19 into the first half on a goal by senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) but Widener (6-8 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) tied the game just two minutes later on a goal by Lauren Fidati.

Noon scored her first goal of the day at 17:45 to push the Blue Jays ahead 2-1, but the Pride knotted the game again at 32:19 on a goal from Megan Scarpinato.

In the second half, Noon put the Blue Jays ahead for good with 18:08 to go, and sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) added a goal with 16:19 left to extend the Etown lead to 4-2. Angstadt finished off the scoring as she scored with 8:58 to play and again with 2:54 left.

Elizabethtown finished with a 30-6 edge in shots over Widener, including 19-1 in the second half, and took 14 penalty corners to seven for the Pride.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) tallied four saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Megan Purcell finished with 16 stops for Widener.

Women's soccer drops 2-1 battle to Arcadia

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Katie O'Malley scored on a 35-yard blast with 14:52 remaining to give Arcadia University a 2-1 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field.

O'Malley's goal, aided by a tailwind, found the upper part of the net to help the Knights (7-5-2 overall, 1-1-1 Commonwealth) spoil Homecoming for the Blue Jays (9-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 Commonwealth).

Arcadia took a 1-0 lead at 23:38 as Stephanie Welch put home the rebound of a shot by Sam Calhoun, but Elizabethtown knotted the contest at 58:39 as senior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) took a pass from senior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and fired in her ninth goal of the year. Junior Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) also assisted on the goal.

Elizabethtown applied steady pressure over the final 15 minutes after O'Malley's goal, but were unable to deliver the tying goal. The Blue Jays did finish with an 11-9 edge in shots over the Knights, and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished with three saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Jennie Groves (two saves) and Jacquelyn Eckert (one save) appeared in net for the Knights.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team hosted a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on Friday, falling 3-0 to 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport University in the afternoon and 3-0 to top-ranked Juniata College in the evening.

Against Christopher Newport (23-5 overall), the Blue Jays lost 25-19, 25-21 and 25-23. Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led Elizabethtown with nine kills and 11 digs, sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) handed out 21 assists to go with four blocks and junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) recorded four blocks.

Against Juniata (21-2 overall), the Blue Jays (12-14 overall) fell by scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-11. Tanner, Deats and first-year student Kelsey Hayes (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) led the way with five kills apiece for the Blue Jays, while Burkholder had 12 assists. Tanner shared the team lead in digs at six with first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot).

Women's tennis to compete at MASCAC championships

Elizabethtown to Compete at MASCAC Women's Tennis Individual Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the 2008 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville.

Action at the two-day tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday with semifinals and finals in each of six singles flights and three doubles flights.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) will compete at flight one for the second straight year after going 3-2 in conference play during the fall season. Swarr, who was honored as Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year last year, was the conference runner up at flight three in 2006.

At flight two will be senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) who is the defending champion at flight three singles. She overwhelmed her conference competition during the regular season for the second straight year, finishing 5-0 in league play and losing just one game, after finishing 4-0 and dropping one game in 2007.

Junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) will play at flight three following a conference schedule in which she compiled a 4-1 record. She competed at flight four last season and saw action at flight six in her first year.

First-year students Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School), Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) and Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) will make their MASCAC debuts after playing at flights four, five and six, respectively, during the fall. Poulle went 2-3, Neill 1-1 and Oberg 2-2 during conference play.

In doubles, Russell and Swarr will play at flight one after going 5-0 in conference play and teaming to finish as runners-up at flight two last year. Russell was also the runner-up at flight three in 2006 while Swarr was the MASCAC champion at flight two as Yu's partner in 2006.

Yu and Poulle will play at flight two after going 4-1 during the fall, while Oberg will play with fellow first-year student Shannon Brown (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) at flight three following a 2-1 fall season.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) had a career-high 28 kills to fall one short of the school record as Elizabethtown College edged Widener University 3-2 in a thrilling Commonwealth Conference volleyball match on Wednesday night at Thompson Gymnasium.

Tanner just missed the program record of 29 kills set in 1986 by Jill Bowser as the Blue Jays (12-12 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) won by scores of 25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22 and 16-14 over the Pride (19-7 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth).

Tanner also finished with 18 digs and five blocks for the Blue Jays, while sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely) had 15 kills to also reach double figures.

Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the Blue Jays with 32 assists and also recorded 12 digs, while sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) came off the bench to add 20 assists and five kills.

Defensively, first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) had a team-high 23 digs with junior Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) adding 20.

For Widener, Rachel Lambert led with 21 kills and six blocks, with Devan Green adding 16 kills. Jamie Ballew led with 56 assists and Duong Lau posted a match-high 25 digs.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Five different players scored goals as Elizabethtown College defeated Lycoming College 5-0 in Commonwealth Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts), sophomore Katelyn Roderick (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and senior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) scored in the first half for the Blue Jays (9-3-2 overall, 1-0-1 Commonwealth) while juniors Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) and Christina Sheppard (Millville, NJ/Millville) added second-half tallies.

Dotterer opened the scoring at 15:56 as she took a short pass from sophomore Lisa Nyman (South Glastonbury, CT/South Glastonbury) and beat the keeper for her eighth goal of the season. Roderick added her third of the year at 22:05 as she headed home a pass from sophomore Paige Minka (Avondale, PA/Kennett).

Russo wrapped up the first-half scoring with her fourth of the year at 28:11 as she deflected home a shot by senior Carly Hoskins (Bangor, PA/Bangor).

In the second half, Scott netted her third of the year at 55:04 as she drilled home a clear attempt by the Warriors, and Sheppard closed the scoring at 62:07 as she played a long cross by Minka over the keeper.

Elizabethtown finished with an 18-5 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks over Lycoming (4-5-2 overall, 1-1-1 Commonwealth).

All three Blue Jay keepers saw action in the contest, as senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) started and made no saves in 56 minutes, first-year student Lauren Duffy (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) made one save in 19 minutes, and sophomore Kristen Kelly (Bensalem, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) finished with one stop in 15 minutes. Brie Pepe made seven saves in 66 minutes for the Warriors, while Chelsea Powers did not see a shot on goal in the final 24 minutes.

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team defeated Arcadia University 6-3 in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in their final dual match of the fall season.

The Blue Jays (3-2 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) secured the third seed in next spring's conference tournament, where they will play second-seeded Messiah College. The Knights (9-4 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) are the fourth seed and will face top-seeded Lebanon Valley College.

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won 6-0, 6-0 over Cory Mazen at first singles, senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) defeated Sarah Lapp 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Megan Gillespie at third singles, and first-year student Alyssa Neill (New Milford, CT/New Milford) won 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles over Danielle Klim.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell won 8-1 at flight one over Lapp and Irina Samson, and Yu teamed with first-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) for an 8-6 win over Mazen and Kate Wiseman at flight two.

Field hockey rises to 13th in NFHCA Division III poll

Field Hockey Rises to 13th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team moved up one spot to 13th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (13-2 overall) defeated 15th-ranked Gettysburg College 3-1 on Tuesday, and shut out Arcadia University 4-0 on Saturday to rise from 14th in last week's rankings. It is the sixth straight week that Elizabethtown has been ranked, and the second time this year that the Blue Jays have climbed as high as 13th in the poll.

Bowdoin College remains undefeated at 11-0 and holds the top spot in the rankings, followed by The College of New Jersey, Messiah College, Ursinus College and Tufts University.

Elizabethtown, which defeated Immaculata University 7-1 on Monday afternoon, hosts Widener University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for Homecoming.

Liz DeMatteis named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

Liz DeMatteis Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- For the second time this season, Elizabethtown College sophomore forward Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in field hockey, the conference office announced for the week ending Oct. 12.

DeMatteis scored five goals in two games to lift the Blue Jays to wins over #15 Gettysburg (3-1) and Arcadia (4-0). She scored all four goals against Arcadia in a span of 13 minutes in the second half to become the first Blue Jay since 1997 to score four goals in a game.

For the season, she leads the Blue Jays (13-2 overall) with 14 goals and three assists for 31 points.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) scored two goals and added a pair of assists as 14th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated Immaculata University 7-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Monday afternoon.

Boone scored both of her goals in the first 8 minutes, 19 seconds as the Blue Jays (13-2 overall) led 4-0 at halftime and finished with a 21-3 edge in shots over the Mighty Macs (3-9 overall).

Sophomore Aimee Stango (Westminster, MA/Oakmont Regional) added a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes while senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep), junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and first-year student Caitlin Grimes (Newark, DE/Padua Academy) also tallied for the Blue Jays.

Senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) dished out three assists in the victory for Elizabethtown, with sophomores Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) and Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) also adding assists.

Boone tallied at 3:21 and 8:19 to give Elizabethtown an early 2-0 lead, with Noon scoring her ninth of the year at 15:56 and Miles her eighth of the season at 27:34 to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead at intermission.

Grimes notched her first career goal at 43:50 to extend the Elizabethtown lead to 5-0, and after Katherine Fouhy put Immaculata on the board at 57:37, Stango scored her first two career goals at 61:49 and 64:16 to close the scoring.

In addition to the large margin in shots, the Blue Jays also held a sizable advantage in penalty corners by a 16-2 edge over the Mighty Macs.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made one save in 59:35 for the Blue Jays, with first-year student Steph Smith (Roslyn, PA/Abington) finishing with one save in 10:25 in goal. Brittany Worthington made eight saves in the cage for the Mighty Macs.

POMONA, Calif. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team closed its three-match trip to California with a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The Blue Jays lost to Chapman University 3-1 (14-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-18) and host Pomona-Pitzer (25-22, 25-22, 25-23).

Against Chapman, the Blue Jays received 12 kills and 12 digs from junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) along with 11 kills from sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely). Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 32 assists, while sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had a team-high 16 digs.

Against Pomona-Pitzer, the Blue Jays (11-12 overall) were paced by 14 kills from Tanner and nine kills and four blocks from junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro), while Agnew had 26 assists and first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) had a season-high 26 digs.

CHESTER, Pa. --- Bill James and Andrew Sinclair scored first-half goals as Widener University defeated Elizabethtown College 2-1 in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

James scored on a penalty kick at 28:46 and assisted on Sinclair's goal at 31:49 for the Pride (5-5-3 overall, 1-1-0 Commonwealth), who won despite being outshot 16-11 by the Blue Jays (3-7-2 overall, 0-2-0 Commonwealth).

Elizabethtown got on the scoreboard with 4:22 remaining as senior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) scored his third goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from sophomore Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic).

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) tallied two saves in goal for Elizabethtown, and Hamed Correa finished with eight saves for Widener.

The Blue Jays (8-3-2 overall, 0-0-1 Commonwealth) finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots over the Pride (6-4-2 overall, 0-1-1 Commonwealth), including a 3-1 edge in overtime, but neither team could dent the scoreboard.

Senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) recorded her sixth shutout of the season by making five saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Alee Gunter made nine saves for Widener.

Etown men win Juniata Invitational

Elizabethtown 1st of 11 at Juniata Eagle Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's cross country won the 11-school Juniata College Eagle Invitational at Fort Roberdeau on Saturday morning, scoring 29 points to easily defeat runner-up Juniata (62 points) and Susquehanna University (69 points).

Ten Blue Jays were among the top 18 finishers in the field of 106 runners on the 7,500-meter course, including five in the top 10.

Senior Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) led the Blue Jay contingent with a third-place finish in a time of 25:29.6. Finishing fifth through eighth, respectively, were first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) in 25:51.5, junior Myles Lund (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) in 25:52.0, first-year student Charlie Larsen (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney) in 25:55.3 and first-year student Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) in 25:56.3.

Senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) was 11th in 26:00.4, first-year student Colby Miller (Oak Hill, VA/Flint Hill School) took 12th in 26:04.3, and sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) crossed the line 15th in a time of 26:08.0

Women's cross country places 2nd at Juniata Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's cross country team finished second out of nine schools at the Juniata College Eagle Invitational at Fort Roberdeau on Saturday morning.

Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) finished second out of 82 runners with a time of 19:25.0, nine seconds behind race winner Alycia Woodruff of Susquehanna University over the 5,000-meter course.

Junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was fourth in 19:57.0, sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) took fifth in 20:13.2 and senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) placed eighth in a time of 20:25.5.

Susquehanna won the team title with 30 points, followed by Elizabethtown (37), host Juniata (90), Saint Vincent College (99) and Moravian College (101).

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored all four goals in a span of 13 minutes in the second half as 14th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated Arcadia University 4-0 in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

DeMatteis scored at 39:30, 44:06, 49:15 and 52:31 for the Blue Jays (12-2 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth), becoming the first Etown player to score four goals in a single game since Mandi Ewing against Albright College on Oct. 8, 1997.

The Blue Jays finished with a 26-9 advantage in shots and a 13-1 edge in penalty corners over the Knights (4-9 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth).

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) finished with three saves in recording her sixth shutout of the season for Elizabethtown, while Brittany Rasmussen (13 saves) and Rachel Palis (three saves) split time in the cage for Arcadia.

REDLANDS, Calif. --- In the opener of a three-match trip to Southern California, the Elizabethtown College volleyball team lost to the University of Redlands 3-0 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs (10-9 overall) defeated the Blue Jays (11-10 overall) by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-22.

Elizabethtown was led by junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) who had 11 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) dished out 19 assists while junior Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) had 15 digs and first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) added 13 digs.

Megan Phillips led Redlands with 11 kills and five blocks, while Kelina Smith had 21 assists and Lauren Harding posted a match-high 21 digs.

The Blue Jays will conclude their trip with two matches at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, against Chapman University (2:00 p.m.) and the host Sagehens (4:00 p.m.).

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College picked up an 8-1 victory over Lycoming College in Commonwealth Conference women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (2-2 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) won five of six singles matches and all three doubles pro sets to claim the win over the Warriors (2-6 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth).

In singles, junior Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Aimee Snyder 6-0, 6-3 at first singles, senior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles over Rebecca Reynolds, and at third singles junior Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) downed Erica Niemann 6-0, 6-1.

First-year student Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway School) won 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles over Kelly Drinkard, and first-year student Allison Oberg (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) defeated Abigail Petritsch 6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell won 8-2 over Snyder and Reynolds at flight one, Yu and Poulle were an 8-1 winner over Niemann and Drinkard at flight two, and Oberg and first-year student Shannon Brown (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) were an 8-2 winner at flight three over Petritsch and Esther Sandvik.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The University of Scranton snapped Elizabethtown College's six-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory in non-conference women's soccer action at Ira R. Herr Field on Tuesday night.

Erin Unterstein and Emily MacPhee scored off broken plays for the Royals (8-4-0 overall), who won despite being outshot 14-6 by the Blue Jays (8-3-1 overall).

Unterstein scored at 12:08 as an attempted shot by Chelsea Paskman bounced in front of the goal, where she knocked it home. The Blue Jays knotted the score at 28:14 as sophomore Katelyn Roderick (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) chipped home a crossing pass by junior Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan).

The Royals notched the game-winner at 39:50 when Paskman's pass ricocheted to Emily MacPhee, and she put home her seventh goal of the season.

Senior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) played all 90 minutes in goal for Elizabethtown but did not make a save, while Caitlin Byrne finished with seven stops for Scranton.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored 57 seconds apart late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and give 14th-ranked Elizabethtown College a 3-1 win at 15th-ranked Gettysburg College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon.

Miles scored with 9:59 left to give the Blue Jays (11-2 overall) a 2-1 lead, and DeMatteis followed with her team-high 10th goal of the year with 9:02 to play as Elizabethtown overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Gettysburg (7-4 overall) had taken a 1-0 lead at 18:47 on a penalty stroke by Anne Ritter, and nursed the advantage until Elizabethtown knotted the score with 25:19 to go on a goal from senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley).

Sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) assisted on Duval's tying goal, with junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing,  PA/Wyomissing) picking up the helper on the go-ahead goal by Miles and senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) assisting on DeMatteis' tally.

The Blue Jays held a 14-10 advantage in shots over the Bullets, with Gettysburg finishing with a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Goals in each half gave Franklin & Marshall College a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the annual Smith-Herr Boot game on Tuesday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field.

Rob Hassler scored in the first half to open the scoring for the Diplomats (5-4-2 overall) while Rodrigo Nogales added an insurance tally in the second half as F&M retained the trophy for the second straight year.

Hassler headed home a free kick by Matt Melino at 27:40 to give the Diplomats a 1-0 lead, and Nogales chipped home a shot at 70:47 to close out the scoring, with an assist to Eric Noto.

Franklin & Marshall finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots over the Blue Jays (3-6-2 overall) and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) made one save in goal for the Blue Jays, while Zach Zamek finished with four saves for the Diplomats.

Field Hockey Remains 14th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team remained 14th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (10-2 overall) lost 2-0 to eighth-ranked Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday afternoon, but rebounded to defeat York College (4-1) in the completion of a suspended game on Thursday and win over previously unbeaten Wilkes University 3-1 on Saturday.

Bowdoin College again holds the top spot in this week's poll, followed by The College of New Jersey, Middlebury College, Messiah College and Ursinus College.

Elizabethtown plays at 15th-ranked Gettysburg College on Tuesday afternoon, and travels to Arcadia University for a Commonwealth Conference contest on Saturday.

LITITZ, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College golf team finished ninth out of 17 teams at the Bent Creek Invitational, hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on Monday afternoon.

The Blue Jays turned in a round of 328, while tournament winner Franklin & Marshall shot 297 to win by 19 strokes over runners-up Rutgers-Camden and Wesley College.

Leading finisher for Elizabethtown was senior Mike Wagner (Allentown, PA/William Allen) who tied for sixth place with a five-over-par round of 76. Sophomore Nick Iacono (Hockessin, DE/Sanford School) tied for 43rd place with an 83, while first-year student Dan Bolstein (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) tied for 48th with an 84.

Dennis Gunderson of F&M was medalist with a one-under-par round of 70, followed in second by teammate Andrew Woods with a 71.

Brooke Dotterer named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

Dotterer Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- For the second time this season, Elizabethtown College senior forward Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) has been honored as the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in women's soccer, the conference office announced for the week ending Oct. 4.

Dotterer scored her fourth career hat trick to lead the Blue Jays to their sixth consecutive victory, a 4-1 win at Misericordia University on Tuesday night.

She scored in the 29th, 51st and 64th minutes to become the fourth player in program history to reach 40 career goals, joining Kristy Wade (68 from 1996-99), Amy Hyde (63 from 1989-92) and Andrea Thompson (40 from 1997-2000).

Dotterer, who recently became the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career points, also passed Thompson (103 points) for third place on the Elizabethtown career scoring list with 106 points.

For the season, Dotterer leads the Blue Jays with seven goals and five assists for 19 points in 11 matches, including three game-winning goals.

Elizabethtown (8-2-1 overall) returns to action on Tuesday night hosting the University of Scranton at Ira R. Herr Field beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Men's soccer plays to 1-1 tie at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College and Washington & Jefferson College played to a 1-1 tie in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (3-5-2 overall) opened the scoring just 2:23 into the match as first-year student Dan Featherer (Logan Township, NJ/Kingsway Regional) scored for the second straight game with an assist to sophomore Taylor Helsel (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock).

The Presidents (3-4-3 overall) knotted the score at 15:09 when Dan Hart deflected home a throw-in by Jeremy Delmaster, and the teams went scoreless for the remaining 75 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.

Washington & Jefferson finished with a 20-15 edge in shots over Elizabethtown, including 5-3 in overtime, while each team took six corner kicks.

Senior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with seven saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Tyler Hodgins made five stops for the Presidents.

KINGSTON, Pa. --- Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored twice in a span of 31 seconds in the first half as 14th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated previously unbeaten Wilkes University 3-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) added a goal and an assist for the Blue Jays (10-2 overall), who scored all three of their goals in the first five minutes, 31 seconds of play.

Amanda Peters scored with 18:18 remaining for the Lady Colonels (10-1 overall), who had allowed a total of five goals in their first 10 matches.

DeMatteis scored at 3:14 off an assist by senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and followed with her team-high ninth goal of the year at 3:45 with an assist to Angstadt to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Angstadt followed at 5:31 with her sixth of the season on an assist by sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) to boost the Etown advantage to 3-0.

The Blue Jays finished with a slim 12-11 advantage in shots over the Lady Colonels, while Wilkes held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) picked up the victory for the Blue Jays by making five saves in goal, while Lindsey Davenport finished with six saves for the Lady Colonels.

Blue Jays defeat York in suspended game

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored two first-half goals and added an assist as 14th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated York College 4-1 in the completion of their non-conference field hockey match on Thursday afternoon.

The game was started on Sept. 6, but was delayed for nearly two hours by heavy rain and lightning before being halted with 14:52 remaining in the second half and Elizabethtown leading 4-0.

Junior Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) and senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) also scored for the Blue Jays (9-2 overall), who held dominating advantages in shots (20-3) and corners (14-2) over the Spartans (6-7 overall).

Prior to the suspension, the Blue Jays had taken a 3-0 lead in the first half as Boone scored at 2:24 from senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and DeMatteis added tallies at 14:16 and 26:59, the latter assisted by junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing).

In the second half, Angstadt scored at 39:50 off an assist by DeMatteis to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead. York got on the board with 13:48 remaining on a goal by Megan Spangler.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) finished with one save in goal for the Blue Jays, while Claire Rekitzke finished with 10 stops for the Spartans.

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team moved to 3-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with a 3-0 victory at Arcadia University on Wednesday night, by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-23.

The Blue Jays (11-9 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) won for the 14th time in their last 15 regular-season conference matches dating to the start of the 2006 season, including eight in a row since the beginning of last season.

Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led Elizabethtown with 10 kills and eight digs, while sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) added 27 assists. Junior Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) finished with a team-high 15 digs for Elizabethtown, which hit .359 as a team in the match.

Hailey Barger led the Knights (6-8 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) with eight kills, while Kim Lomas added seven kills and two blocks.

HARRISBURG, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College golf team finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Messiah College Falcon Classic, held at the Blue Ridge Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays shot 321 as a team to finish behind tournament champion Rutgers-Camden (302), Muhlenberg College (307) and the host Falcons (315).

Senior Mike Wagner (Allentown, PA/William Allen) tied for 10th place with a round of 77 for the Blue Jays, followed by junior Kurt Amen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) in 17th place at 79 and sophomore Alex Catalano (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) in a tie for 27th place with an 82.

The Elizabethtown "B" team finished in eighth place with a round of 334, as first-year student Andy McDonough (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) shot a 76 to finish in ninth place.
