Cross Country Teams Prepare for NCAA Mideast Regional Meet

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet at the Greene County Airport in Waynesburg on Saturday. The men's 8-kilometer race begins at 11:00 a.m. followed by the women's 6-kilometer race at noon.

The Elizabethtown women finished fourth at last year's Mideast Regional meet and earned a berth in the NCAA Division III championships, where they finished in a tie for 23rd place in a field of 32 teams. The Blue Jay men finished in the top 10 in the region eight straight years from 1999 through 2006, including winning the 2002 championship.

Elizabethtown's women won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship for the second straight year and third time in the last five years, placing four runners in the top 10 to finish six points ahead of nationally-ranked Messiah College.

Leading the Blue Jay squad of seven runners is senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge), who finished second at the MAC championships and is a three-time All-Region runner. Last year, she finished 17th in the region after taking 12th as a first-year runner in 2005.

Two other All-Region runners in the Blue Jay lineup are junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), who finished seventh at the MAC championships and 34th at last year's regional meet, and sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill), who was eighth in the MAC this year and 28th in the region last season.

Senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) also turned in a top-10 finish at the MAC championships as she came in ninth, while sophomore Teresa Beshore (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) finished in 17th place.

Rounding out the Blue Jay lineup are first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), who was 44th at the conference meet, and sophomore Alex Walmer (Hershey, PA/Hershey), who came in 47th place.

The Blue Jay men finished as runner-up to Messiah at the MAC championships, with their top seven runners finishing in the top 15 in the final individual standings. Four of Elizabethtown's seven entrants are first-year students, each of whom finished 22nd or better at the conference championships.

Senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) led the Blue Jays at the MAC meet by finishing in third place, followed in fourth by senior Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) and in sixth by first-year student Colby Miller (Oak Hill, VA/Flint Hill School).

Joining Miller as first-year students making their regional debuts are Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey), who was 12th at the conference meet, Charlie Larsen (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney), who took 13th, and Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin), who placed in 22nd.

Sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) will also compete for the Blue Jays following a 17th-place finish in the MAC.

The top two teams and top seven individuals not with a qualifying team in each region in both the men's and women's events will automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III championship at Hanover (Ind.) College on Saturday, Nov. 22.
