Elizabethtown College to Compete at MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams will be in action at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships at Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jay men will favored to win their sixth straight MAC indoor crown while the women will look to regain the MAC team title that they won in 2006.

Elizabethtown's men are led by seniors Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg), both of whom have played key roles in the Blue Jays' run of five straight team titles.

Clark, the defending NCAA Division III indoor champion in the pole vault, will be looking for his fourth MAC indoor title in the event. Last year, he set a MAC indoor record by clearing 16 feet, 6 inches en route to the championships.

He will also be a top contender for a medal in the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump and the 200 meters for the Blue Jays, after taking fourth in the hurdles and the long jump last year.

Graybeal swept the 400 and 800 meters at both the MAC indoor and outdoor championships last year, and is the top seed in both events this year. He has also been part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team in each of the last two years.

Junior Phil Alder (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) and sophomore Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) each won two golds last season, in the 4x400 and distance medley relays.

Sophomore A.J. Farris (Edgewood, MD/Joppatowne) was fifth in both the 55 meters and 200 meters last year, but is expected to be a top medal contender in each event.

Senior Dave Bresnahan (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) is the top seed in the mile at 4:28.25, while junior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) and first-year student Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) will be contenders in the 5000 meters.

For the women, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) is primed to win her third straight MAC indoor title in the 800 meters, and is poised to take gold in the mile after winning two straight MAC outdoor crowns in the 1500 meters.

Senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) is the defending indoor and outdoor champion in the 5000 meters, and is the top seed in the event by a spread of 23 seconds. She will also look to give the Blue Jays a one-two finish in the mile as the number-two seed behind Kulp.

Two years ago, the Blue Jays swept all four relays en route to their first MAC women's indoor championship, and this year Elizabethtown is the top seed in three of the events (distance medley, 4x800 and 4x400).

First-year student Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) will vie for a medal in the 55 hurdles, along with first-year student Lauren Riley (Sanatoga, PA/Pottsgrove) and senior Samantha Adams (Mickleton, NJ/Padua Academy) in the pole vault.

Junior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) is a nine-time MAC medalist in jumps, and will look for gold in all three jumping events (long, high and triple).

WINCHESTER, Va. --- Junior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) scattered two hits and struck out four over eight innings of work as Elizabethtown College defeated Shenandoah University 4-1 in its 2008 baseball opener on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Blue Jays (1-0 overall), who scored twice in the fifth and added single runs in the seventh and eighth to pick up the win over the Hornets (2-2 overall).

The lone run for Shenandoah came in the fourth as Drue Vernon walked and came around to score on a groundout by Scott Van Dusselorp to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.

In the seventh, Vinagro singled and came in on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead, and in the eighth Heaps singled and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts).

Senior RJ Mount Submits Winning Entry in Wrestling Essay Contest

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior RJ Mount (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville Township) has been named one of two winners in an online essay contest on the topic "What I Love Most About College Wrestling" as sponsored by online wrestling fan Jim Brown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The winners will receive two all-session tickets to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, as well as a three-night stay at the Cedar Rapids Marriott and two tickets for a performance at Penguin's Comedy Club.

The winning essay by Mount is reprinted below, with permission:

"To put it quite simply, I could express what I love the most about wrestling in a single solitary word: pride. Quoting Dan Gable, "Many have wrestled without great skill; none have wrestled without great pride.", this seems to sum up what wrestling means to those of us that never won a national title, or made All-American status, or even started for their respective team. To me, it sums up my career as a wrestler.

I came from an area of modest wrestling talent in Northern New Jersey and never had a break out season, never had the upsets that headline newspapers. I was consistent, and to my family, coaches, and friends that was enough to be proud of. To me, I always found myself wanting more and more, disregarding things I had accomplished and never finding the satisfaction that everyone else seemed to have with themselves. For this, I chose to end my career as a wrestler after high school and play lacrosse in college. However, wrestling wasn't done with me.

After a freshman year that left me spiritually spent with the passing of my grandparents, and disenfranchised with lacrosse to the point where I found myself coaching high school wrestling on a volunteer basis just to be apart of it again, I decided that my life was my own and I chose not only to transfer, but to wrestle again. Soon, I found myself in Elizabethtown, PA starting pretty much from square one again, but this time on terms I could accept as a person and an athlete.

At Elizabethtown, I grew into a man. No longer did I feel a lack of accomplishment in what I did; I took pride in every moment I stepped on the mat, every minute I spent fighting and breathing hard. Wrestling now wasn't about consistency, or crowds, or my family, it was personal. To be honest, it was my outlet. Every time I felt my life slipping into a place where I could not control it, I found myself thinking about wrestling; the next move, the sweet feeling of a takedown that felt effortless, or the solace that the sport was always going to be there for me, regardless of whatever turn my life took. What had been a consistency, now had become a constant in my life.

There is no gold medal at the end of this story; I am a college reserve wrestler. I compete in the practice room to make our starters better so that they can realize their goals. And despite there being no All-American certificate on my wall, I have never regretted coming back to wrestling, not for a single second. Through the double sessions, and weight cutting, and broken noses, and tough breaks, I take away the only thing worth taking away from something: pride. Wrestling has become my life's achievement and I am proud to be a wrestler. I'm proud to wear the shoes, do the pushups, and ice my shoulders after practice. Nothing has given me the sense of accomplishment that wrestling now bestows upon me. For that, I am proud."

(RJ Mount has a 2-2 record this season and has seven career victories)

Swim teams to participate in bone marrow drive on April 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bone Marrow Drive Continues Kreider Family Quest

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The first time Alison and Randall Kreider were involved with a bone marrow drive, their parents and friends organized the event on behalf of their infant son. Although Tyler passed away before the 1999 drive took place, the Kreider family is continuing its efforts to find bone marrow donors because “that’s a part of him that lives on. We want to keep going, because we’re trying to help somebody else,” Alison said.

Both coaches at Elizabethtown College, Alison and Randall have recruited members of their teams – men’s and women’s swimming and women’s volleyball -- to help plan a bone marrow drive from 4 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, April 1, in the Event Space of the College’s Baugher Student Center.

Participants will join the registry list for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) so that their tissue type may be compared to the tissue types of thousands of patients who need transplants. With an appointment, the entire process takes about 10 minutes, according to Alison, whose husband Randall is also a system/network administrator at Elizabethtown. “After you receive information and sign a consent form, you will perform a buccal (cheek) swab on yourself,” she said. “Without an appointment, it may take up to 20 minutes.”

There is no cost to prospective donors, as The Tyler G. Kreider Fund and the NMDP cover expenses. To make an appointment, contact Alison Kreider at 717-367-5751 or kreidera@etown.edu.

The NMDP estimates that a marrow or blood cell transplant could benefit more than 35,000 children and adults with life-threatening diseases each year. NMDP facilitates an average of more than 200 transplants each month, with more than 2,500 transplants annually. Its registry is the largest listing of volunteer donors and cord blood units in the world.

“We’re hoping to get more people on the registry to increase the odds of finding a match for someone,” Alison said. “The likelihood of being called is slim, but that’s why we need more people to be screened.”

If someone is identified as a potential match for a patient, he or she undergoes more extensive testing and monitoring, in addition to counseling to prepare for the donation. “Even if you participate in this drive and are a match, there’s no obligation to donate,” Alison said. “That’s a decision you make later.”

The Kreider family set up The Tyler G. Kreider Fund through the NMDP with donations from family and friends. Alison’s brother, Joseph Denlinger ‘91, donated to the fund in lieu of wedding favors when he and his wife got married in October, 2004.

“Family members and friends put the money in,” Alison said, “and we felt we should use it for this purpose. We had the funding, and this is a great community in which to sponsor a drive.”

This is the third bone marrow drive organized on the Elizabethtown College campus by the Kreiders, with the previous events being held in 1999 and 2005.
