Foley Nets Seven, But Blue Jays Fall 12-11

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Despite a seven-goal performance from junior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross), the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team lost in their 2008 season opener to McDaniel College 12-11 in non-conference action at a chilly Wolf Field on Thursday.

Foley, who moved into second place on the Elizabethtown career scoring list with 116 goals, tallied five times in the second half as the Blue Jays (0-1 overall) nearly made up a 12-6 deficit in the final seven minutes against the Green Terror (1-0 overall).

Brittany Baer led McDaniel with four goals and an assist, while three other players netted two goals apiece for the Green Terror, who led 6-3 at halftime and used a five-goal run to take their biggest lead of the day at 11-4 with 19:14 left.

Trailing 12-7 with four minutes to go, the Blue Jays cut the Green Terror lead to 12-11. SophomoreStephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) scored with 3:33 left to start the run, followed by goals from Foley with 2:29 to go, sophomore Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) with 39 seconds left and Foley with 20 seconds to go.

Kreis finished with three goals and four draw controls for the Blue Jays, while junior Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) dished out three assists.

Both teams finished with 29 shots in the contest, with Elizabethtown junior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) making nine saves. Sarah White finished with eight stops for McDaniel and Leanne Hollinger added two saves.

Women's Lacrosse Season Opener Postponed

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Friday's non-conference women's lacrosse match between visiting York College and Elizabethtown College has been postponed due to snow and ice until Monday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to open action on Thursday, Feb. 28 against McDaniel College at 4:00 p.m. at Wolf Field.

Elizabethtown Women's Lacrosse Picked Second in MAC Preseason Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team has been picked to finish second in the Middle Atlantic Conference preseason coaches poll, as voted upon by the league's nine head coaches and released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays are coming off the best season in the program's six-year history, finishing 13-4 overall and in first place in the MAC with a perfect 10-0 record in 2007. However, Elizabethtown was upset in the MAC semifinals by FDU-Florham in overtime by an 11-10 score.

Head coach Mike Faith, who was honored as MAC Coach of the Year in 2007, welcomes back 11 starters and 17 letterwinners for his fourth year on the sidelines. Junior Katie Foley is the reigning MAC Player of the Year after netting 69 goals and 24 assists for 93 points, and sophomore Katie Caprinolo was named Rookie of the Year after tallying 44 goals last season.

Lycoming College earned the top spot in the poll with five first-place votes and 67 total points, followed by Elizabethtown with three first place-votes and 65 points. FDU-Florham is third at 62 points, followed by Messiah College at 56 points (one first) in fourth.

King's College (43 points), Widener University (39 points), MAC newcomer Manhattanville College (28 points), Wilkes University (25 points) and MAC newcomer Arcadia University (20 points) round out the poll.

The Blue Jays open their 2008 season on Friday, Feb. 22 at Wolf Field hosting York College at 4:00 p.m. Elizabethtown kicks off an eight-game conference slate on Saturday, March 29 at home against FDU-Florham at 2:00 p.m.
