Back to top 3/29/2008 Blue Jays split doubleheader at Messiah, Alex Lee becomes career strikeout ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SOFTBALL Blue Jays Split Commonwealth Doubleheader at Messiah Click here for the game one boxscore GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) became Elizabethtown College's career leader in strikeouts and innings pitched as the Blue Jays split a Commonwealth Conference softball doubleheader at Messiah College on Saturday, dropping game one 7-5 before coming back for a 3-1 win in game two. Lee pitched complete games in both ends of the doubleheader, striking out six in each game to increase her career total to 415, breaking the mark of 404 set by Michelle Morris from 2001 to 2004. She also tossed 13 innings on the afternoon to boost her career mark to 515 1/3 innings, passing Morris' previous standard of 502 2/3 innings. In game one, the Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit, as Nicole Adams went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and Rebekkah Funk finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior Amanda Gordon (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) and junior Holly Martin (Elizabethtown, PA/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, NY) each went 2-for-4 in game one for the Blue Jays. Elizabethtown took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to three Messiah errors, one of which pushed home the first Blue Jay run. Senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) added a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Messiah picked up a run in the bottom of the first on a groundout, but the Blue Jays added three runs in the third on a solo homer by Martin and a two-run double by sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro). The Falcons pulled within 5-2 in the third on an RBI single by Adams, and went ahead for good in the fifth on a two-run double by Adams, a two-run single by Rebecca Stackhouse and an RBI single by Jessica Climenhaga to take a 7-5 lead. Climenhaga earned the win after allowing one hit over 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Messiah, while Lee took the loss after yielding 12 hits and seven earned runs while striking out six and walking two. In game two, the Blue Jays (6-9 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) were outhit 11-5 by the Falcons, but took a 3-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings and rode the arm of Lee (5-5) to the win, as she struck out six and left 11 Falcons stranded on the bases. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by first-year student Kelsea Corrado (La Plata, MD/La Plata), and extended their lead to 3-0 in the third on a two-run home run by Gordon. Messiah (10-11 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) scored its lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Megan Rice, and put its first two hitters on base in the fifth and seventh innings but could not score the tying run. Funk finished 3-for-4 in game two for Messiah, while Bowie and Climenhaga each went 2-for-3. Corinn Eby (2-4) took the loss for the Falcons after allowing four hits and three runs in three-plus innings of work. Game one Game two Back to top 3/20/2008 Gettysburg posts doubleheader sweep of Etown, 4-3 and 7-5 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SOFTBALL Gettysburg Sweeps Softball Doubleheader, 4-3 and 7-5 Click here for the game one boxscore ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Visiting Gettysburg College earned a sweep of their non-conference softball doubleheader at Elizabethtown College on Thursday afternoon, winning game one 4-3 and taking game two 7-5. In game one, Heather Sagaities's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Bullets the win over the Blue Jays. Gettysburg jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a groundout and a passed ball, but Elizabethtown answered in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown). The Bullets went ahead 3-1 in the third on an infield single by Abbe Miller, but the Blue Jays tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by sophomore Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley). Neither team scored until the sixth, when Megan MacNabb doubled with one out and came home on Sagaities' single up the middle. Kristy Rubino (4-1) tossed a complete game win for Gettysburg, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking four. Senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) took the loss for Elizabethtown, allowing six hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out six. In game two, the Bullets (7-3 overall) took advantage of four Elizabethtown errors to score six runs on just one hit in the second inning, and held on for the victory over the Blue Jays (5-6 overall). Ali Iacobucci went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Gettysburg, which finished with just six hits in the contest. Miller added an RBI double for the Bullets in the fifth inning. Elizabethtown scored three times in the third inning on an RBI single by Church, an RBI double by first-year student Kelsea Corrado (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) and a wild pitch. In the fifth, the Blue Jays added two more runs on a walk to sophomore Sheri Hihn (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) and an RBI groundout by first-year student Shannon Marsico (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown). Church went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game two for the Blue Jays, who tallied eight hits as a tem. Beth McCullough (3-1) went the distance to get the win in the nightcap for the Bullets, striking out eight and walking seven, while first-year student Lisa Malehorn (Halifax, PA/Halifax) allowed just one earned run and struck out two over seven innings, but fell to 1-3 with the loss. The Bulldogs (8-2 overall) won the opener on a two-run single in the top of the second inning by Kylie Fehnel, and took the nightcap over the Blue Jays (5-4 overall) as Amanda Kensicki knocked in a pair of runs with a third-inning single. Jenn Lococo (4-0) scattered three hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort in game one for the Bulldogs, while Kristen Cybularz (2-1) fired a four-hitter in game two with one strikeout. Fehnel went 3-for-4 as part of a 10-hit attack for DeSales in game one, while sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) finished 2-for-3 with a double for Elizabethtown. The Bulldogs managed just five singles from five different players in game two, while Tanner and senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) each went 2-for-3 to account for all four Blue Jay hits. Sophomore Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) also went 3-for-3 as the Blue Jays (5-2 overall) scored nine runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run by Hoover, to put away the Mustangs. First-year student Kelsea Corrado (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in while sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) slugged a solo home run in the fifth inning. Elizabethtown Coll. 12, Villa Julie College 0 Back to top 3/5/2008 Elizabethtown sweeps doubleheader from Green Mountain and Gettysburg ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SOFTBALL Elizabethtown Sweeps Past Green Mountain and Gettysburg Box score vs. Green Mountain MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College softball team posted its second doubleheader sweep of its spring break trip, defeating Green Mountain College 12-11 in eight innings in game one and downing Gettysburg College 4-1 in game two. The opener saw the Blue Jays rally from a 9-1 deficit to force extra innings, then score three runs in the bottom of the eighth after falling behind 11-9 in the top of the eighth. The Eagles led 9-1 midway through the third inning, but Elizabethtown tallied one run in the third, five in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut the Green Mountain lead to 9-8. With the bases loaded, sophomore Sheri Hihn (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) hit what appeared to be a go-ahead grand slam, but time had been called as the pitch was delivered when a section of the fence behind home plate blew over. Denied a home run, Hihn instead settled for a sacrifice fly on the next pitch to tie the game at 9-9. In the top of the eighth, Green Mountain took an 11-9 lead on a two-run home run by Amanda Malkin, but Elizabethtown came back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles by Hihn, sophomore Meghan Tooley (Bedford Hills, NY/Fox Lane) and sophomore Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry), the latter giving the Blue Jays the win. Sophomore Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and four runs scored for Elizabethtown, while junior Amanda Gordon (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and first-year student Kelsea Corrado (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win for the Blue Jays, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out 11. Kaitlin Petros, who earlier hit a three-run home run for the Eagles, took the loss after allowing eight hits and 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. In game two, the Blue Jays (4-2 overall) erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth, and added single runs in the fifth and sixth to defeat the Bullets (3-2 overall) for the first time since the 2004 season. Senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored for the Blue Jays, while first-year student Shannon Marsico (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Against Villa Julie, the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by first-year student Kelsea Corrado (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata), but were shut down the rest of the way as Elizabethtown finished with five hits off Mustang pitcher Sarah Moelter, who struck out five to get the win. Corrado and junior Amanda Gordon (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) each went 2-for-3 for the Blue Jays, while Jessica O'Neill finished 2-for-3 with a run batted in for the Mustangs (3-2 overall). First-year student Lisa Malehorn (Halifax, PA/Halifax) saw her record even at 1-1 after allowing nine hits and two earned runs while striking out one in a complete-game effort for the Blue Jays. Against Neumann, the Blue Jays (2-2 overall) trailed 6-0 after five innings, but tallied once in the sixth and twice in the seventh in a last-ditch rally against the Knights. Senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Elizabethtown, which finished with five hits off Neumann starter Angela Sebasto, who whiffed nine in the victory. Danielle Hayes led the Knights by going 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Caitlin Hanrahan finished 2-for-3 and scored twice as Neumann scored twice in the second, third and fifth innings. Against Juniata, first-year student Kelsea Corrado (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) scattered six hits and struck out five to pick up the win. The Blue Jays trailed 2-0 after one inning thanks to a two-run double by the Eagles' Liz Schmitt, but came back with three runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh to put the game away. First-year student Shannon Marsico (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored in her collegiate debut for the Blue Jays. Alyssa Erb took the complete-game loss for the Eagles (0-1 overall) despite striking out seven, while Sarah Eckard went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Against Philadelphia Biblical, the Blue Jays (2-0 overall) trailed 7-0 after one inning but ralllied to take a 10-9 lead in the sixth on a three-run home run by Corrado. After the Crimson Eagles (0-1 overall) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, Elizabethtown scored seven runs in the seventh to come away with the win. The 17 runs against Philadelphia Biblical represent the highest-scoring output by the Blue Jays since an 18-3 win over Shenandoah University on March 17, 2000. Sophomore Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) and junior Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) each finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Blue Jays, who tallied 13 hits in the contest and took advantage of eight errors by Philadelphia Biblical.
