Back to top 4/29/2008 Alex Lee named MASCAC Scholar-Athlete FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jared Auman, Alex Lee and Drew Graybeal Recognized as MAC Scholar-Athletes ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College seniors Jared Auman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy), Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) and Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) have been recognized by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) as Scholar-Athletes for the 2008 spring sports season, the conference office announced Tuesday. Auman (baseball), Lee (softball) and Graybeal (men's outdoor track and field) increase the number of Blue Jay student-athletes to receive the MASCAC Scholar-Athlete Award this academic year to seven, out of 22 sports sponsored by the conference. They will be recognized, along with all other MASCAC award winners, at the conference's annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, May 6 at King's College in Wilkes-Barre. Auman, a catcher and the reigning Commonwealth Conference Co-Player of the Year, leads the league in batting average (.442), hits (57) and doubles (17), and ranks among the conference leaders in slugging percentage (.636), on-base percentage (.486), runs batted in (36) and total bases (82). Entering the postseason, Auman ranks third in program history in batting average at .386, is tied for third in doubles with 40 and is seventh in hits with 156. Academically, Auman has a 3.42 cumulative grade-point average as a criminal justice major at Elizabethtown. Lee, a first-team All-Conference selection at pitcher last season, has a 9-11 record and a 2.54 earned run average in 24 games (19 starts) this season. She leads the conference in strikeouts (130), complete games (19) and innings pitched (143 1/3) and ranks fourth in victories. For her career, Lee is Elizabethtown's career leader in games pitched (99), starts (85), complete games (80), innings pitched (588 1/3) and strikeouts (476). She has completed each of her last 50 starts, and has 33 career wins. Off the diamond, Lee won a first-place drawing award at a campus-wide student exhibition through the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, and collaborated with the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey on a new brochure as part of her senior capstone project. Academically, Lee has a 3.55 cumulative grade-point average as a marketing with a minor in studio art. Graybeal is a five-time MAC champion in outdoor track and field, winning the 400 meters and 800 meters last season and the 4x400-meter relay three times. He was also a 2007 NCAA Division III All-American in the 800 meters, and holds the school outdoor records in the 400 meters, 4x400 and 4x800 meters. In addition, Graybeal is a three-time All-American in indoor track and field and won eight MAC indoor track and field gold medals. He holds five school indoor records, and was the 2008 MAC Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Away from track, Graybeal is a member of the Physics Club and the Engineering Club, and was a Presidential Scholarship and Hager Scholars Award recipient. Academically, Graybeal has a 3.27 cumulative grade-point average as a computer engineering major. The MASCAC recognizes Scholar-Athletes in each of the eight spring sports sponsored by the conference, with the conference Awards Committee giving equal consideration to academic record and athletic prowess. Valerie Malizzia pitched a complete-game four-hitter in game one, and Laura Snyder duplicated the feat in the nightcap as the Dutchmen (24-9 overall, 9-1 Commonwealth) improved to 14-2 at home, where they will host the conference playoffs. In game one, the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI double by senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown), but Lebanon Valley scored three times in the third on an RBI double by Kristen Uhas and a two-run home run by Jessica Salisbury. The Blue Jays threatened in the sixth, putting runners on first and third with two out, but Malizzia induced a popup to end the threat. Malizzia (10-3) struck out four and walked three to earn the win for Lebanon Valley, while senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) fell to 9-11 after allowing six hits and striking out eight in a complete-game effort. Sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) went 2-for-3 with a triple for the Blue Jays in game one, while Salisbury finished 2-for-2 with a two-run homer for the Dutchmen. In game two, Snyder improved to 12-2 and lowered her earned run average to 1.16 with her fifth shutout of the season, striking out 10 and walking none while scattering four singles. Lebanon Valley jumped on the board in the third inning on an RBI double by Katie DeJulio, and added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Snyder. First-year student Lisa Malehorn (Halifax, PA/Halifax) allowed six hits and struck out one for the Blue Jays (11-22 overall, 5-5 Commonwealth), but took the loss. The Blue Jays will be the third seed for next weekend's conference tournament, and will play second-seeded Widener University in their opening game on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Lebanon Valley. In game one, Bummer (6-8) allowed just three hits while the Aggies scored once in the first and two in the second to account for all of the runs in the contest. Delaware Valley went ahead 1-0 in the first on an RBI single by Kelly Andrews, and tacked on two runs in the second on RBI singles by Bummer and Robyn Jackson. Senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) went 2-for-3 with a double for the Blue Jays in game one, while Andrews and Maureen Ferguson each finished 2-for-3 as the Aggies tallied 10 hits as a team. Bummer struck out eight and walked one to pick up the shutout win, while first-year student Lisa Malehorn (Halifax, PA/Halifax) took the loss after giving up three earned runs and striking out two. In game two, the Aggies (11-17 overall) broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the second and two in the third, while Ruhling (3-7) surrendered three hits and fanned four to pick up the victory. Delaware Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Bethany Pavlik, but Elizabethtown (11-20 overall) came back with a run in the second on error. The Aggies scored in the second on an RBI single by Jackson, and twice more in the third on a two-run home run by Brittany Stockert. Malehorn started for the Blue Jays and allowed two runs on one hit in one-plus inning of work to take the loss, while first-year student Kelsea Corrado (La Plata, MD/La Plata) closed with five innings of relief, allowing seven hits and two runs. In game one, Erin Plank hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Gina Stefanelli hit a game-ending double in the bottom of the sixth for the Lady Colonels, who finished with 11 hits. Lindsay Behrenshausen (13-5) went the distance for Wilkes, allowing two hits and striking out seven. First-year student Lisa Malehorn (Halifax, PA/Halifax) dropped to 2-7 for the Blue Jays after surrendering all eight runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) and junior Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) accounted for Elizabethtown's hits with singles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. In game one, Steph Connolly broke a 1-1 tie with a fourth-inning double, and Mallory Meyer allowed two hits and survived five walks to earn the victory for Widener. The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Meyer led off with a single and scored on a groundout by Krista Cesarine. The Blue Jays tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI double by sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro). After Widener went ahead 2-1 in the fourth on Connolly's double, Elizabethtown had a chance to tie the game in the sixth with two runners on base, but Connolly made a diving catch of a line drive to end the inning. Meyer (10-6) struck out three to gain the win for Widener, while senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) was the hard-luck loser after giving up five hits and striking out two in a complete-game performance. Game two saw the Blue Jays (11-16 overall, 5-3 Commonwealth jump to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) and sophomore Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) along with a throwing error. However, the Pride (26-10 overall, 7-1 Commonwealth) struck back for seven runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by pitcher Kim Dougherty, a two-run double by Caitlin Callahan, an RBI single by Stephanie Caulford and three Elizabethtown errors. Elizabethtown came back with two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Tanner and a bases-loaded walk to junior Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) to cut the Widener lead to 7-5. Widener tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Dougherty, and put the game away with four runs in the seventh on RBI single by Meyer and Krista Cesarine, and a two-run single by Caulford. The Pride finished with 16 hits in game two, including 3-for-4 efforts from both Callahan and Dougherty. Four other players had two hits each for Widener, while Caulford drove in three runs. Tanner paced the Blue Jays in the second game as she went 3-for-4, the lone Elizabethtown player with more than one hit in the contest. Dougherty (10-2) allowed nine hits and struck out three to pick up the win, while Lee (9-10) took her second loss of the afternoon as she surrendered all 12 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits. In game one, the Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by senior Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown), but the Crusaders answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on an error and a game-winning single from Rhiannon Sorrentino. Elizabethtown finished with nine hits against Alvernia starter Michelle Jensen, including a 2-for-3 performance from sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) and two hits in two at-bats by sophomore Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area), who returned to the lineup after missing 21 games with an injury. Senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) threw a complete game for the Blue Jays in game one, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs while striking out five and walking one. In the fourth, the Blue Jays exploded for six runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) broke the tie with an RBI single, while Tanner added a two-run triple, first-year student Kelsea Corrado (La Plata, MD/La Plata) singled home a run and sophomore Sheri Hihn (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) walked with the bases loaded while a Crusader error allowed another run to score. The Blue Jays won the opener 6-5 and took the nightcap 10-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule. In game one, Corrado roped a two-run home run in the first inning, while Church cleared the bases with a grand slam in the sixth to give the Blue Jays a 6-1 lead. Albright rallied in the bottom of the fifth as a three-run home run by Stevie Crouse trimmed the Elizabethtown lead to 6-4. The Lions added a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Alex Keyes, but senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) finished off the win with her eighth strikeout of the game.
