Back to top 4/30/2008 Blue Jays sweep singles in 7-2 win over Wilkes ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Snaps Wilkes' 12-Match Win Streak With 7-2 Victory ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A sweep of all six singles matches gave Elizabethtown College a 7-2 victory over Wilkes University in non-conference women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays (8-2 overall) snapped a 12-match winning streak for the Lady Colonels (14-2 overall), whose only other loss came to Division II Bloomsburg University back on Sept. 13. The starting lineup for Wilkes entered the day with a combined singles record of 90-13 on the season. Sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Alison McDonald at first singles, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) came back to defeat Xiaoqiao Zhang 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at flight two, and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) cruised past Kristin Wilt 6-1, 6-0 at flight three for her 12th straight win. First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Victoria Bybel at fourth singles, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) beat Michelle Knight 7-5, 6-4 at flight five, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) downed Katie Buckley, who was 16-0 on the season, by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) final at sixth singles. Michelle Knight/Katie Buckley (WIL) 9-7 Back to top 4/28/2008 Elizabethtown to face Methodist on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in NCAA Division III FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Women's Tennis to Play Methodist in NCAA Opener ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will face Methodist College in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. The Blue Jays (13-3 overall) earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA team championships with a 5-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference finals on April 20. The Monarchs (20-3 overall) won the USA South Conference championship for the eighth straight season after finishing the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record in league play. The winner of Friday's match will play the host Eagles, ranked seventh in the nation, in a second-round match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. In the other half of the regional bracket, College of New Jersey will face the winner of Friday's other first-round contest between Johns Hopkins University and Cabrini College. Saturday's winners will meet for the regional title on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the championship tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. from May 13-18. ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown College Wins Third Commonwealth Conference Team Championship in Four Years, Earns First-Ever NCAA Tournament Berth LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- For the first time in program history, the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will compete in the NCAA Division III team tournament after the Blue Jays defeated Lebanon Valley College 5-0 in the Commonwealth Conference finals at the Hempfield Sports Complex on Sunday morning.
The Blue Jays (13-3 overall) won their third Commonwealth Conference title in the last four seasons by sweeping doubles and winning two singles matches to clinch the championship, the fifth conference title in program history. First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) gave the Blue Jays their decisive fifth point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sammy Burkey at fourth singles, after tournament MVP Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) swept Kelly Moll 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. Elizabethtown's doubles wins came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Yu over Sarah Grodzinski and Shayna Heintzelman 8-4 at flight one, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) by an 8-6 score over Jan White and Leslie Sabas at flight two, and Albers and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) at flight three over Moll and Charissa Nordall by an 8-4 score. With the victory, the Blue Jays will participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament beginning Thursday, May 1 at a site and time to be determined. Kelly Moll/Charissa Nordall (LVC) 8-4 Back to top 4/17/2008 Women's tennis prepares for Commonwealth Conference team tournament FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Men's and Women's Tennis Teams to Compete in Commonwealth Playoffs ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's tennis teams will participate in the Commonwealth Conference team tournament this weekend at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville. The Blue Jay women (12-3 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) are the top seed and will play in the championship match on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Saturday's first-round match between third-seeded Messiah College and second-seeded Lebanon Valley College. The Blue Jay men (7-5 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) will face Lebanon Valley in a first-round match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with the winner to play Messiah on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the championship match. The Commonwealth Conference men's and women's champions will each receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins May 2. Elizabethtown's women will look for its third Commonwealth Conference championship in the last four years, having won in both 2004 and 2005. The Blue Jays lost 5-4 to Moravian College in last year's finals, in the first year that the conference earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) leads the Blue Jays in victories with a 17-3 mark, including a 14-1 record in dual matches. She ranks fifth in program history with 52 career singles victories, and was the MAC individual champion at #3 singles in the fall. Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) is 12-8 overall at #2 singles, including a 10-5 record in dual matches, and sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year after going 9-9 overall and 8-7 in dual matches at #1 singles. Also reaching double figures in victories were sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) and first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), each finishing with an 11-4 overall record. First-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) joined the team for the spring portion of the schedule and went 6-3 at #6 singles. In doubles, Smith and Yu teamed to go 11-6 overall and 10-4 at #1 doubles, and Swarr and Russell finished with a 14-3 overall record and 12-2 at #2 doubles. Albers and Fisher rolled to a 9-1 mark at #3 doubles for the Blue Jays. The Blue Jay men finished as runner-up to Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference finals last season, after claiming the team title in 2005. Sophomore Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) paces the Blue Jays with an 11-7 singles record, including an 8-4 mark at #1 singles. Junior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) added five wins at #2 singles and senior Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) finished 9-7 overall and 8-4 in dual matches, primarily at #3 singles. First-year student Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) chipped in with six victories while playing at #4 singles, and sophomore Brandon Stolar (Millville, NJ/Millville) posted an even 9-9 record as the team's #5 player. First-year student Stijn van Esveld (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) cracked the lineup late in the season and finished 4-2 at #6 singles. Yu downed Danielle Red 6-0, 6-3 at third singles to improve her career mark to 50-15, joining Heather Lander '07 (68-9), Jodi Weidman '91 (57-11), Kristy Trimbey '06 (55-12) and Stacy Shapiro '07 (54-25) in the 50-win club at Elizabethtown. Yu, who won the Middle Atlantic Conference third singles title in the fall, is 15-2 on the season and 12-0 in dual matches and has won 14 consecutive matches, losing just one set during the streak. The Blue Jays (9-2 overall) won three of the five singles matches played to conclusion and took two out of three doubles pro sets aaginst the Red Devils (6-5 overall).
