Erin Fisher Takes All-America Honors at NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

OSHKOSH, Wisc. --- Elizabethtown College senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the women's 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Thursday evening.

Fisher (left) crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 36:00.52 to become the third Blue Jay to be named All-America in women's track and field, joining Melissa St. Clair '05 (four times) and Carrie Kerna '04 (three times).

"I couldn't be happier with Erin's progress throughout the season," said head coach Chris Straub. "She got a late start to the outdoor season due to injury, but definitely peaked at the right time."

After passing through the first 5,000 meters in a time of 18:03, Fisher was among a pack of 10 runners within two seconds of the lead with one mile (1,600 meters) to go. Pushing the pace, she moved toward the front of the pack and settled into a battle for sixth place over the final 600 meters.

Fisher, who earned All-America honors in cross country with a 15th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Division III championships, will compete in the final race of her career on Saturday when she runs in the 5,000 meters.

In other women's action, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) finished 17th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.48.

On the men's side, senior Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) is in seventh place in the decathlon after amassing 3,432 points on the first day of the two-day event.

His highest-scoring event was the 400 meters, when he took fourth with a career-best time of 49.98 seconds. He also finished second in the 100 meters (11.21 seconds, 814 points) and was fifth in the long jump (21 feet, 5 1/2 inches, 707 points).

Clark also competed in the pole vault, but the four-time All-American was unable to clear the bar in three attempts after wrapping up action in the decathlon just moments earlier.

On Friday, Clark will see action in the final five events of the decathlon (110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters) beginning at 2:00, while senior Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) will participate in the 800-meter trials at 7:35 p.m.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Four members of the Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the NCAA Division III championships at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, beginning Thursday and continuing through Saturday.

For the men, senior Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) will compete in the decathlon and the pole vault, while senior Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) is entered in the 800 meters. On the women's side, senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) will run in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) is slated to participate in the 1,500 meters.

Clark is competing in the pole vault (Thursday, 6:00 p.m.) for the third straight year at the outdoor championships, and in the decathlon (Thursday, 1:00 p.m. and Friday, 2:00 p.m.) for the second consecutive season. He is a four-time All-American in the pole vault (three times indoor, once outdoor) and was the 2007 NCAA Division III indoor champion and 2006 Division III outdoor runner-up.

In March, Clark finished fourth in the pole vault with a height of 16 feeet, 5 1/2 inches at the Division III indoor championships. He was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and pole vault as the Blue Jays won their second straight MAC championship.

He qualified for the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 2 3/4 inches at the Messiah Invitational on April 11, and set a school record in the decathlon with an NCAA-qualifying score of 6,648 points at the same meet. Clark set the school record in the pole vault of 16 feet, 6 inches at Shippensburg in 2006.

Graybeal is entered in the 800 meters (Friday, 7:35 p.m.) at the Division III outdoor championships for the second straight year, finishing sixth last season with a time of 1:54.18 to earn All-America honors for the fourth time in his career.

He previously was named All-America in the 400 meters at the 2008 indoor championships, in the 800 meters at the 2007 indoor championships, and in the distance medley relay at the 2006 indoor championships.

Graybeal is seeded fourth with a time of 1:50.99 that he established at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on May 13. He will be looking to break the school outdoor record in the 800 meters of 1:50.66 set in 2006 by Tyson Evensen.

In addition to the 800 meters, Graybeal also qualified in the 400 meters but declined entry to the event in order to concentrate on the 800 meters.

Fisher is entered with a time of 17:20.60 in the 5,000 meters (Saturday, 4:55 p.m.) set at Swarthmore, and 36:03.08 in the 10,000 meters (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) set at the Penn Relays. She competed in the 5,000 meters at this year's Division III indoor championships and in the 10,000 meters at last year's outdoor meet.

The two-time defending MAC indoor and outdoor champion in the 5,000 meters, Fisher is also the two-time MAC champion in cross country, where she earned All-America honors with a 15th-place finish at the 2007 Division III championships.

She will look to break the Elizabethtown College records in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, which were set by Melissa St. Clair '05 during the 2005 season. St. Clair ran 17:14.79 in the 5,000 meters at the Division III outdoor championships en route to earning All-America honors, and was timed in 35:46.62 in the 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays.

Kulp is a first-time qualifier for the NCAA Division III championships, having earned a berth in the 1,500 meters (Thursday, 5:15 p.m.) with a time of 4:36.03 at Swarthmore on May 13 that broke the school record of 4:36.33 set in 2005 by Katie Garner.

She is the three-time defending MAC outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters and has also won three straight gold medals in the 800 meters at the MAC indoor championships. In all, Kulp has claimed 10 MAC championships (eight individual, two relay) during her Blue Jay career.

Action begins Thursday at 1:00 p.m. with the men's decathlon, and continues through Saturday at 5:55 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Jessica Salisbury's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh capped a four-run rally and gave Lebanon Valley College a 4-3 victory over Elizabethtown College in the Commonwealth Conference softball championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Salisbury's hit gave the Dutchmen (27-9 overall) their first-ever conference title after three previous losses in the championship game. The Blue Jays (13-24 overall) had advanced to the finals for the first time since 2003 with a 1-0 win in 10 innings over Messiah College earlier in the day.

Elizabethtown, which needed to defeat Lebanon Valley twice in order to claim the championship, held a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh. Lebanon Valley began its rally with a leadoff double by Caitlin Keller, and one out later consecutive doubles by Katie Freeman and Chelsea Artz brought the Dutchmen to within 3-2.

After a single by Lauren Sanford put runners on the corners, Katie DeJulio singled home Artz to tie the game at 3-3. Following a walk, Salisbury singled to center to drive home Sanford with the winning run.

The comeback spoiled a sensational afternoon by Blue Jay starting pitcher Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), who had thrown 16 consecutive scoreless innings on the day before the Dutchmen's comeback.

In addition, she provided Elizabethtown with its runs on a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. The blast was the first and only hit of her career in 17 at-bats.

Lebanon Valley finished with an 11-3 edge in hits in the contest, as Salisbury went 3-for-4 and Artz and DeJulio each finished 2-for-3.

Laura Snyder (14-2) earned the win for the Dutchmen, striking out 11 and walking three, while Lee (11-13) fanned two and walked three in her final career appearance. She departs as the program's career leader in games pitched (103), starts (89), complete games (83), innings pitched (615 2/3) and strikeouts (488).

Elizabethtown advanced to the title game with a 1-0 win in 10 innings over Messiah, on a walk-off RBI single by sophomore Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry).

Lee went the distance in the win for the Blue Jays, allowing five hits while striking out five. Jessica Climenhaga took the loss for the Falcons (22-21 overall), allowing two hits in 2 2/3 innings in relief of Megan Rice, who struck out nine and allowed three hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The winning rally started as junior Holly Martin (Elizabethtown, PA/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, NY) led off with a walk and was lifted for junior pinch-runner Amanda Gordon (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township).

Lee sacrificed Gordon to second, and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Allard then singled to left to drive home Gordon with the winning run.

The Blue Jays had chances to win the game in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh and left runners on second and third in the ninth.

The Falcons left two runners on base to end the seventh, and put runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth but could not score.

Allard finished 3-for-5 to account for three of the Blue Jays' five hits in the game, while Amy Bowie went 2-for-4 for the Falcons.

WEST LAWN, Pa. --- Jeremy Stoltzfus pitched a complete game to lift Messiah College to a 7-3 victory over Elizabethtown College in the championship game of the Commonwealth Conference baseball tournament at Owls Field on Saturday.

The Blue Jays had forced a second game in the title round with a 2-0 victory over the Falcons, as senior Chris Minakowski (Roslyn, PA/Abington) tossed a four-hitter in his second career start.

Messiah scored four runs in the top of the second inning and added single runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth to win the conference for the first time since 2005.

Craig Mease led the Falcons by going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Ben Kirk went 2-for-5 and Jon Shenk finished 2-for-4 as Messiah outhit Elizabethtown 11-8.

Stoltzfus (4-4) allowed eight hits and struck out two in his second complete game in nine starts this season. The Falcons took two out of three games with the Blue Jays in the tournament after being swept in three games in the regular season series.

Junior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) led the Blue Jays (26-12 overall) by going 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored, while sophomore Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) finished 3-for-4.

The Falcons struck for four runs in the top of the second off Blue Jay sophomore Ryan Barrett (Knox, PA/Keystone), on RBI singles by Ben Snyder, Shenk and Mease and a groundout.

Messiah added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jordan Zimmerman, but the Blue Jays got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Sheibley hit his fifth home run of the year.

The Falcons scored again in the seventh on an RBI single by Kirk to take a 6-1 lead, and the Blue Jays answered in their half of the frame on an RBI single by junior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove).

The teams traded runs in the ninth as Messiah scored on an error and the Blue Jays tallied on a ground out.

Barrett (1-2) lasted 1 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays, allowing five hits and four runs. The Elizabethtown bullpen combined to allow three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings of relief work.

In game one, Minakowski, making his second career start after 52 relief appearances, threw a four-hit shutout while junior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Blue Jays the victory.

Minakowski (3-2), who lasted just two innings in his previous start in 2006 and whose longest career outing was four innings, struck out one and walked one in the win. He recorded 18 outs by fly ball, and saw just two Falcon runners reach scoring position on doubles in the third and fourth innings.

Semanek hit his fourth home run of the year in the second inning after senior Jared Auman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy) led off with a double.

Auman finished 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays, the only player on either team with more than one hit in the contest. Elizabethtown finished with a slim 5-4 margin in hits over Messiah.

WEST LAWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College advanced to the Commonwealth Conference baseball finals with a 4-3 victory over Widener University on Friday night at Owls Field.

The Blue Jays will face Messiah College, which moved to the championship round with a 15-4 win over Elizabethtown on Friday afternoon, on Saturday at noon. Elizabethtown must defeat the Falcons twice on Saturday to earn their third consecutive league championship.

In the win over Widener, the Blue Jays (25-11 overall) won despite managing just three hits in the contest, and none after the third inning. Sophomore Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was equally strong on the mound for Elizabethtown, taking a one-hitter into the eighth inning to earn the victory.

Widener, which was shut out by Elizabethtown 4-0 in the tournament opener on Thursday, scored in the first inning without a hit as Tom DeAngelis walked, stole second, and scored on a fielder's choice.

The Blue Jays answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI groundouts by junior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) and senior Jared Auman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy), and added a run in the second on an RBI double by sophomore Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford).

After the Blue Jays tacked on a run in the fourth on a fielder's choice, Hartzell shut down the Pride until the eighth when three straight one-out singles, the last by Matt Fischer, cut the Blue Jay lead to 4-2. Sophomore Ryan Barrett (Knox, PA/Keystone) relieved Hartzell and induced two fly outs to escape further damage.

In the ninth, Widener put its first two runners on base and a sacrifice moved them into scoring position. A wild pitch brought home one run and moved the tying runner to third, but senior Chris Minakowski (Roslyn, PA/Abington) relieved and got two comebackers to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.

Hartzell allowed four hits and two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings to improve to 4-0 on the year, striking out three and walking four. Jerry Benedict (2-3) gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss for Widener.

Against Messiah, the Blue Jays saw the Falcons snap a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth inning, then add nine more runs over the final three innings against the Elizabethtown bullpen.

Craig Mease went 4-for-5 with a double, home run and five runs scored, while winning pitcher Sheldon Witmer finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored as part of a 17-hit attack by the Falcons.

Sophomore Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) finished 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Blue Jays, while Auman went 3-for-5 and scored a run for Elizabethtown.

Messiah took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Witmer, but the Blue Jays scored twicein the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Heaps and an RBI single by senior Brandon Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Central).

Mease hit his 10th home run of the season in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2, and the Falcons went ahead for good in the sixth on two-run singles by Ben Kirk and Jon Shenk.

The Falcons added three more runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Jonny Ebersole and an error to take a 9-2 lead. Messiah scored twice more in the eighth on an RBI single by Jordan Zimmerman and fielder's choice, and the Blue Jays answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and a groundout to pull within 11-4.

In the ninth, the Falcons scored four more runs on a balk, RBI singles by Witmer and Zimmerman, and an error to close the scoring.

Witmer (6-1) worked seven innings for the Falcons, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs while striking out five and walking two. Junior Matt Kutz (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) dropped to 5-3 for the Blue Jays after giving up seven hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- An eight-run fifth inning gave top-seeded host Lebanon Valley College a 9-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in a winners bracket game of the Commonwealth Conference softball tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Jays had advanced earlier in the day with a 2-0 victory over Widener University behind a seven-hitter from senior Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus). They will play on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against the winner of a 9:00 a.m. elimination game between Widener and Messiah College, with the winner to face Lebanon Valley in the championship round.

Allie Davies hit two home runs for the Dutchmen (26-9 overall), including a walk-off two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth, as Lebanon Valley advanced to the championship game for the fourth time in the last eight years.

Lebanon Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Davies, and carried the lead through four innings.

In the fifth, the Dutchmen took advantage of three consecutive Blue Jay errors to load the bases with no outs. Chelsea Artz then cleared the bases with a double to right-center to give the Dutchmen a 4-0 lead.

A single by Katie DeJulio pushed the Lebanon Valley lead to 5-0, and Kristen Uhas followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-0. Davies then hit her second home run of the game, a two-run blast to left, to end the contest via the eight-run rule.

Uhas went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Dutchmen, while Davies finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Val Malizzia (11-3) picked up the win for the Dutchmen, allowing two hits and striking out six, while Lee (10-12) took the loss after yielding seven runs (one earned) on five hits in four-plus innings of work.

Against Widener, Lee pitched a complete-game seven-hitter and worked out of jams in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as the Blue Jays avenged a doubleheader sweep by the Pride in their regular-season meeting.

The Blue Jays jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, junior Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) led off with a double off the left-field fence, and came home on a two-out single by first-year student Kelsea Corrado (La Plata, MD/La Plata) that gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.

Widener (30-11 overall) mounted a threat in the fourth inning, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but Lee worked out of the jam by inducing a fielder's choice grounder to end the inning.

The Pride threatened again in the sixth, with runners at first and second with one out. However, Widener was unable to capitalize as Lee got a popup and groundout to escape without any damage.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Kim Dougherty led off with a single to center field, but Lee got the next two outs on a strikeout and a fielder's choice. Caitlin Callahan, who finished 2-for-4, then doubled off the fence in left to put runners on second and third, but Krista Cesarine grounded out to second to end the game.

Sophomore Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays against Widener, while sophomore Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) went 2-for-2 with a double.

Track and Field Ready for MAC Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's track and field teams will be in action at the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships at Widener University.

The three-day meet began Thursday afternoon with day one of the heptathlon and decathlon, along with the men's and women's 10,000 meters. Full competition will start Friday as nine schools compete in 20 men's and 20 women's events.

The Blue Jay men are the defending MAC champions, winning their second title in four years last season. The Blue Jay women posted their best-ever finish in 2006 with a second-place result behind Messiah College.

Elizabethtown's men are led by seniors Kevin Clark (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Drew Graybeal (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg), each of whom has won multiple MAC gold medals during their careers.

Clark is the three-time defending MAC champion in the pole vault, winning last year with a mark of 15 feet, 5 1/2 inches. He has also won a pair of golds as part of the 4x400-meter relay team, and was second in the long jump last season.

Graybeal is the defending conference champion in both the 400 and 800 meters, and has won those events at the indoor championships in each of the last two years. He has also won three outdoor gold medals in the 4x400-meter relay.

Sophomore A.J. Farris (Edgewood, MD/Joppatowne) took third in the 100 meters last year, while senior Ryan St. Clair (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) was third in the steeplechase.

In field events, sophomore Mike Torre (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was third in the javelin last season with a best throw of 186 feet, 3 inches.

Other top contenders will be junior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) in the 800 and 1500 meters, senior Dave Bresnahan (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) in the 10,000 meters, Farris in the 200 meters, and Clark in the 400-meter hurdles.

For the women, junior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) will chase her third straight gold medal in the 1,500 meters, after winning the mile run at the indoor championships. She is also favored to win the MAC title in the steeplechase, with a seed time 22 seconds faster than any other entry, after finishing second last season.

Senior Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run) is the defending MAC outdoor champion and two-time indoor champion in the 5,000 meters, and senior Jenna Riley (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) will aim to defend her title in the triple jump (36 feet, 4 3/4 inches).

Junior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) was runner-up in the high jump last season and took third in the triple jump, and will look to medal along with graduate student Lori Havrilak (West Grove, PA/St. Mark's, DE) in the 400 meters.

WEST LAWN, Pa. --- Junior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) tossed a seven-hitter for his second consecutive shutout as Elizabethtown College opened the Commonwealth Conference baseball tournament with a 4-0 win over Widener University on Thursday afternoon at Owls Field.

The Blue Jays (24-10 overall), who have won the conference tournament in each of the last two years, will face Messiah College on Friday at 3:00 p.m. after the Falcons blanked Albright College 3-0 in Thursday's late game.

Heaps (6-1) struck out three and walked three in the first postseason shutout by the Blue Jays since 2001. In his last start, he threw a two-hitter and struck out nine in a 9-0 win over Albright last Friday afternoon.

Junior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, and threw out a runner at the plate, while junior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Blue Jays, who won for the 13th time in their last 15 games.

The Blue Jays took 1-0 led in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Jared Auman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy) singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single by Semanek.

In the fifth, Elizabethtown added another run as sophomore Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double to left-center by Sheibley . One out later, Sheibley came home on an RBI single by Heaps to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

Widener threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. However, Heaps worked out of the jam by inducing a foul out and a fly out to end the inning.

The Blue Jays added an insurance run in the eighth as senior Brandon Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Central) walked with two outs, moved up on a single by Semanek and scored on a single down the left field line by sophomore Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts).

In the ninth, the Pride picked up back-to-back singles with one out. Alex Neiman followed with a single to left, but Sheibley threw out the Widener runner at the plate for the second out. Heaps then struck out pinch-hitter Justin Maziarz to end the game.

Tristan Harner (6-3) took the loss for Widener (25-13 overall) after allowing six hits and three earned runs in an eight-inning complete game. It was his first career loss to the Blue Jays after three straight wins, including one in last year's conference tournament.

Tom Connelly went 2-for-3 for Widener, which will play Albright in an elimination game on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
