Pa. --- For the first time, Elizabethtown's annual Sprint Blue Jay
Classic men's basketball tournament has shifted from a holiday
tournament to a tip-off tournament. Instead of hosting the tournament
the first weekend of January, the Blue Jays will open their season at
home Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17, playing host to Eastern Mennonite University, Arcadia University, and Delaware Valley College. Said
Etown head coach Bob Schlosser about the date change, "Sprint has been
good to us over the years. The fact the tournament was in January made
it impossible for many Elizabethtown College students to attend in past
years. We decided that it would be best for everyone – Sprint, the
team, the students – to hold the tournament at the beginning of the
season." Schlosser added, "This year we're
expecting to have another outstanding year, and a tip-off tournament
will help get the student body involved in the season right from the
start." John Caldwell of Sprint
added, "It allows the students to become a part of it. Being done over
the holidays during break, kids did not have the opportunity to
participate before." Eastern Mennonite will play Delaware Valley in the tournament's opening game at 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 16. Elizabethtown will host Arcadia
at 8:00 p.m. Friday in the second game of the evening. The tournament
consolation game will be played at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17,
with the championship game to follow at 4:00 p.m. Admission to all
games is free, and halftime at each game will feature contests with
prizes and giveaways. Elizabethtown, the
defending tournament champion, had a breakthrough season last year,
finishing 20-6 overall and tying the program record for wins in a
season while finishing as the Commonwealth Conference
runner-up. The Blue Jays look to fare even better this season,
returning 11 players and three starters from last year's team in
addition to a strong recruiting class. The Blue Jays are picked to
finish second in the 2001-02 conference coaches' poll, and received the only first place vote not given to Widener in the poll. Arcadia, which Elizabethtown faces in the first round, is picked to finish ninth in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll. Delaware Valley is picked to finish seventh in the Freedom Conference preseason coaches' poll after an 8-16 overall finish and 5-9 record in the conference last year. Eastern Mennonite University finished 9-16 overall and 7-11 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2000-01. The Royals are picked to finish ninth in the conference preseason poll this year. the program. The Etown women's basketball
team received 29 points in its poll, four points behind Widener, which
was picked to finish fourth, and one point ahead of Juniata, which was

place with Widener in the Commonwealth Conference last year, and missed
the postseason for the first time since the Middle Atlantic Conference
realigned in 1993. Elizabethtown's wrestling team received 14 points in the MAC wrestling poll and was one point behind Albright, which was picked to finish seventh. Back to top 9/11/2008 11/7/02: No Going Back: 2002-03 Men's Basketball Preview FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No Going Back: 2002-03 Elizabethtown College Men's Basketball Preview ELIZABETHTOWN,
Pa. --- If there is one thought guiding the Elizabethtown men's
basketball program one year after the beginning of its run to the NCAA
Division III Final Four, it is, "There's no going back." Never again do
the Blue Jays expect to have a year that could be termed a rebuilding
situation, and the Blue Jays are certainly reloading rather than
rebuilding in 2002-03. There are gaps to fill, of course, with the
graduation of last year's top scorer and main point guard. However, Etown brings back three starters from last year who all averaged double figures in scoring, including Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), Jon English (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) and Chad Heller (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot). All three could hit the 1,000 career point mark this year. Loftus,
a guard, averaged 14.4 points per game last year, led the team with 63
steals, and was second on the team with 102 assists en route to earning
first team all-conference honors. Starting center English
averaged 15.8 points per game and led the team with 6.9 rebounds per
game. He was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference second team at
the conclusion of last season. Heller, a forward, averaged 14.3
points per game, was second on the team with 53 steals, and was third
among the Blue Jays in rebounding with 5.1 per game. Also back are juniors Jim Barron (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua), a point guard, forward Darryl Brown (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) and center Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Warwick),
all of whom saw quality minutes last year, as well as a promising
quintet of sophomores who all played at the varsity level last year.
Add to that a corps of highly talented freshman recruits that could be
early contributors, and the explosive cocktail of meshing players that
has defined Etown basketball over the past several years appears well
mixed once again. Etown's situation at point guard, though, could become ticklesome, especially at the beginning of the season. Barron,
the heir-apparent to the position after playing 11.3 minutes per game
last year, is currently injured and hopes to be available by December.
Due to this, sophomore Graham Smith (York, PA/Eastern York) as well as freshmen Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) and Kyle Stern (Lincoln University, PA/Salesianum) could see a much closer look at point guard than they otherwise would this early in their careers. As usual, Etown's high-energy attack will feature a great many people constantly substituting in and out of the mix. The Blue Jays, which have the potential to be a better defensive team this year than last, will rely on constant pressing to wear down opponents and generate offense. That does not mean, however, that this team is not capable of putting vast numbers of points on the scoreboard like it did last year. The deciding factor in the outcome of the Blue Jays' season this year hinges on how they deal with having a metaphorical target on their backs as every team in a stronger Commonwealth Conference looks to unseat them. Head coach Bob Schlosser's hope is that the realization that there are high expectations for the team this year will focus its energy in a positive direction. Division III tournament before falling to Etown in a 94-90 nail-biter

Pa. --- Some may think that losing three high quality seniors, among
them two 1,000 point scorers, from last season's Commonwealth
Conference championship team would leave Elizabethtown saddled with a
rebuilding year. Not so, according to head coach Bob Schlosser, for
several reasons. "The style we play causes us to play a lot of people,"
he explained. As a result, Elizabethtown is actually bringing back a
highly experienced team full of players who have seen many quality
minutes. Also, Schlosser said, "We raised the bar about three years ago
and aren't looking back. So, we're not looking at another rebuilding
year again. It's a matter of finding a way to get things accomplished,
and we have the ingredients to find a way this year." While
it may seem hard to believe for those who have watched Etown play over
the past several years, Schlosser believes this year's team may be the
fastest yet. This means that the Blue Jays will be able to do even more
pressing and more up-tempo play than ever before. It also helps that
Etown has the depth to substitute enough to maintain this pressure for
an entire game. Although there are 16 players on the varsity roster
this year, more than in previous years, Schlosser maintained it was
still hard to decide who should start out this year on the junior
varsity squad. Currently, there are no first-years on the varsity
roster, but, Schlosser said, "There are some talented young players who
could work their way into the mix before all is said and done." On
the court, Etown will utilize its pressing defense and quickness to
help generate offense. The team has the potential to put up big
offensive performances; players like guards Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey), Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon), and Ben Tannous (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) can all shoot the ball very well, but getting consistency from them will be one of the keys to the Blue Jays' success. An area where the Blue Jays will have to see some new faces step up is in generating inside points. Schlosser is hoping that Dan Keane (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East), Andrew Flynn (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) and Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Warwick) will all be able to generate points under the basket. Schlosser has also noted this preseason that Keane appears
to be the team's most improved player to date from last season, and
attributes this development to his strong work ethic. One
thing that has helped all players on the team improve this year is the
fact that just about every spot in the starting lineup is wide open,
which has resulted in more competitive practices this year than in
previous seasons. That competitiveness has
not taken anything away from an area that has been one of Etown's
biggest strengths in the last few years, however. Team chemistry
appears to once again be a promising source of strength. Much of the
program's success over the past several years, according to Schlosser,
has stemmed from internal group dynamics, and the players who are
juniors and seniors now have seen first hand how valuable developing
strong bonds among teammates can be and have worked hard to further
develop those bonds. He is also quick to acknowledge the work of Daecher,
this year's lone captain, in doing an outstanding job in leadership,
both in terms of quiet leadership and in doing all the little things
needed to pull the group together. At this point, Schlosser feels that "we're going to be good." The question, however, becomes, "Will we be good enough to make a run at it?" This is largely due to the fact that the Commonwealth Conference this year appears to be the strongest it has been from top to bottom in a long time. The teams that were in rebuilding modes last year are not any more. To this end, the Blue Jays have developed a set of goals for themselves, already emblazoned on a poster made by the team, to pursue this season that will hopefully enable them to be good enough to challenge for yet another conference title and NCAA tournament bid. They are: 1. Find A Way; 2. Together; 3. Every Day, Every Play. If Etown can find and use its strengths, maintain unity, and work hard on every play, the Blue Jays feel that they will be able to soar high once again this year. Elizabethtown returns two starters – senior Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) and junior Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts), each of whom averaged more than 25 minutes per game last year. Also back is junior Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley), who started the last several games of the 2005-06 season and averaged over 20 minutes per game. Additionally, the Blue Jays bring back senior captains Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham), each of whom averaged over 11 minutes per game last year. Brizek, a guard, averaged 9.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game last year, and he led the Blue Jays in steals with 51 and was second on the team in assists with 75. He shot 35.1% from three-point range. Piersol, a guard and forward, averaged 12.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, and he had 34 assists. He shot 48% from the field. Schatzmann, a guard and forward, averaged 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in his first season with the Blue Jays, and he finished second on the team in steals with 41 and in blocked shots with ten. He also led Etown in free throw shooting, hitting 80.5% of his attempts in a team-best 66-for-82 performance from the line. Ledyard, a forward, averaged 5.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game, and he racked up 42 assists and 39 steals in that time last year as he played all 25 games. Point guard Goodwin returned from a first semester studying abroad in Spain to total 29 assists, 15 steals and 2.8 points per game in 17 second semester games, averaging 11.7 minutes per game in each of them. Several other returning Blue Jays saw significant playing time last year, among them senior guard Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area), senior guard Rob Fusaro (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends), junior forward Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area), junior forward Nick Kennedy (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area), junior forward Jordan Dirago (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill), junior guard Ben Schlosser (Elizabethtown, PA/Lancaster Catholic) andsophomore point guard Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City). Last year, Kieres played in 19 games and averaged 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game. Fusaro played in 15 games and averaged 0.9 points and 0.3 rebounds in 3.5 minutes per game, and he shot 30% from three-point range and 75% from the free throw line. Rodgers could start at the five spot this year; he played in 13 games last year and averaged 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.7 minutes per game. Kennedy played in 11 games last year and averaged 2.2 points and 1.0 rebounds in 5.4 minutes per game, and Dirago averaged 1.3 points, 0.6 rebounds and 3.6 minutes per game in nine games in 2005-06. Schlosser averaged 3.2 minutes in six games last year, and Schaffer, the lone first-year student to see varsity playing time in 2005-06, totaled nine assists while averaging 1.0 points and 0.7 rebounds in 5.7 minutes per game in 13 games in 2005-06. Added to this strong group of returning players are four newcomers to the varsity team: one junior transfer student, one sophomore moving up from the junior varsity squad, and two first-year students who will split time between the varsity and junior varsity teams in 2006-07. The transfer student is center Billy Orr (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon Catholic), who as a first-year student at Commonwealth Conference rival Lebanon Valley College in 2004-05 averaged 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game and shot 65% (39-for-60) from the field. However, he has also struggled with injuries in recent years. Said Schlosser, “We feel he is going to help us when he is healthy.” Sophomore guard and forward Chris Fairbanks (Lititz, PA/Warwick), who played for Elizabethtown’s junior varsity squad last year, “will be in the mix for a lot of minutes,” Schlosser said. The first-year students who may see some varsity playing time this year are forward Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) and forward and center Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield). The players on Elizabethtown’s roster are, on the whole, slightly bigger than in previous years. As is typical for the Blue Jays, this year “a lot of our scoring will come from our perimeter,” Schlosser said. “But,” he continued, “we are looking at a lot of balance inside, too.” That balance can add yet another dimension to Elizabethtown’s unique, multi-faceted, high-pressure style of play that utilizes a lot of players over the course of a game. In fact, that style is why the Blue Jays have so much experience coming into this season despite the loss of three starters. Another thing the Blue Jays have going for them is the strong leadership the team has received from its upperclassmen, especially captains Goodwin and Ledyard. Team chemistry and togetherness have been essential components to Elizabethtown’s successes over the years, and the pair have made them focal points over the preseason. Elizabethtown has created a strong challenge for itself right at the start of the 2006-07 season: this year’s Days Inn East Blue Jay Classic tournament, which opens the season Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18, includes Ohio Northern University, which went 21-6 last year and is ranked fifth in the D3hoops.com pre-season national poll for NCAA Division III. It also includes DeSales University, which went 16-9 last year and competed in the ECAC South Region Tournament, and Penn State-Harrisburg, which went 11-12 last year.Back to top 9/8/2008 2/20/07: Luke Ledyard Named to MASCAC Weekly Men's Basketball Honor Roll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Senior Luke Ledyard Named to MASCAC Weekly Basketball Honor Roll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior forward Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov.
