Lebanon Valley captures 2-0 win over Etown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Shelly Lobach assisted on the go-ahead goal and scored an insurance goal as 7th-ranked Lebanon Valley College defeated Elizabethtown College 2-0 in the completion of their suspended Commonwealth Conference field hockey match on Wednesday afternoon.

The match had been halted on Tuesday afternoon with 24:52 remaining due to lightning, and the Dutchmen (8-1 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) needed just over eight minutes to break a scoreless tie as Alex Wolfe tipped home a penalty corner started by Lobach with 16:50 remaining.

Lobach added an insurance goal off another penalty corner with 4:35 left for the Dutchmen, who finished with a 12-8 edge in shots over the Blue Jays (8-2 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) while both teams took seven penalty corners.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) finished with six saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Caitlin Baro made four stops for Lebanon Valley.

Field Hockey climbs to 14th in NFHCA Division III poll

Field Hockey Climbs to 14th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team moved up one spot to 14th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (8-1 overall) climbed up from 15th following victories over McDaniel College (2-0) on Wednesday and then 19th-ranked Eastern Mennonite University (4-0) on Saturday.

Bowdoin College remains in first place in this week's poll, followed by Middlebury College, Johns Hopkins University, Ursinus College and Messiah College. Lebanon Valley College, the Blue Jays' opponent on Tuesday afternoon, is ranked seventh.

Brenna Noon named Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week

Noon Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior forward Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in field hockey for the week ending Sept. 27, the conference office announced Monday.

Noon scored three goals in two matches to lift the Blue Jays to wins over McDaniel (2-0) and #19 Eastern Mennonite (4-0). She scored the insurance goal with 24 minutes left in the win over McDaniel, and tallied twice in the first half to lead Elizabethtown past Eastern Mennonite and increase her team-high goal total to eight.

The Blue Jays (8-1 overall), who were ranked 15th in last week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Coaches Poll, host 8th-ranked Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Wolf Field.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) scored a pair of first-half goals as 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College shut out 19th-ranked Eastern Mennonite University 4-0 in non-conference field hockey action at a rain-soaked Wolf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Noon, who leads the Blue Jays (8-1 overall) with eight goals on the season, scored at 19:41 and 29:32 to give Elizabethtown a 2-0 lead at halftime, then seniors Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) tallied in the second half to seal the win over the Royals (7-2 overall), whose seven-game winning streak came to an end.

Sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) assisted on Noon's first goal and Duval's tally, while senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) picked up assists on each of Noon's markers.

Elizabethtown finished with a 13-10 edge in shots over Eastern Mennonite, while the Royals held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made three saves in recording her fifth shutout in the last six games, while Becky Nolt finished with five stops for Eastern Mennonite.

WESTMINSTER, Md. --- Second-half goals by senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) gave 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College a 2-0 victory over McDaniel College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) assisted on both goals for the Blue Jays (7-1 overall), who finished with a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners over the Green Terror (4-4 overall).

Angstadt scored her fourth goal of the season just 1:09 into the second half to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead, and Noon tallied her team-high sixth of the year with 24:18 remaining to provide the Blue Jays with an insurance tally.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made one save to record her fourth shutout of the season for Elizabethtown, while Erika Wawzyanick finished with three stops for McDaniel.

Field Hockey Drops to 15th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team has fallen two spots to 15th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays (6-1 overall) entered last week ranked 13th in the poll, but suffered their first loss of the season to King's College on Saturday by a 2-1 score. Earlier in the week, Elizabethtown defeated Swarthmore College 4-0.

Bowdoin College remains in first place in this week's poll, followed by Middlebury College, the College of New Jersey, Johns Hopkins University and Messiah College.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Debbie Wychock scored the tiebreaking goal with 15:57 left in the second half as King's College defeated 13th-ranked Elizabethtown College 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Lady Monarchs (8-0 overall) bounced back from a a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Blue Jays (6-1 overall).

Elizabethtown had taken a 1-0 lead with 10:09 left in the first half as junior Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) scored her first goal of the season. King's tied the game with 2:48 left in the half as Wychock set up Candice Russ for the equalizer.

Wychock, who became the Lady Monarchs' career leader in goals with 62 in their most-recent contest on Thursday, scored her 22nd goal of the season in just eight games off a feed from Danielle Terracciano to put King's on top for good.

The Lady Monarchs posted a slim 12-11 edge in shots over the Blue Jays, with Elizabethtown holding a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) finished with eight saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Erin McGinley made seven stops for King's.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) scored a pair of goals as 13th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated Swarthmore College 4-0 in non-conference field hockey action at Wolf Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) also scored for the Blue Jays (6-0 overall), who used a 16-1 edge in shots over the Garnet (1-4 overall) to record their third consecutive shutout.

Noon put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard just 2:41 into the contest as she knocked home a rebound, and Angstadt extended the Elizabethtown lead to 2-0 at 22:51 with her third goal of the season.

In the second half, Noon scored her second of the day and fifth of the season with 16:59 remaining to push the Blue Jays ahead 3-0, and DeMatteis capped the scoring with her fifth of the year with 7:31 left.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) saved Swarthmore's only shot to post the shutout win, while Gina Grubb finished with six stops for the Garnet.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team has climbed to 13th in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays, ranked 19th last week, moved up six spots in the survey following victories over Juniata College (4-0) and Moravian College (3-0) last week. Elizabethtown received one first-place vote and 309 total points in the poll.

Bowdoin College remains in first place in this week's poll, followed by Salisbury University, the College of New Jersey, Lebanon Valley College and Middlebury College.

Vogel named Commonwealth Conference Defender of the Week

Vogel Named Commonwealth Conference Defender of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior defender Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Defender of the Week in field hockey for the week ending Sept. 13, the conference office announced Monday.

Vogel was a key part of a Blue Jay defense that allowed a total of three shots in back-to-back shutout wins over Juniata College (4-0) and Moravian College (3-0). On the offensive side of the field, she assisted on the Blue Jays’ final goal against Juniata and scored the second goal in the win over Moravian.

The Blue Jays, who were ranked 19th in last week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Coaches Poll, will carry a 5-0 record into Tuesday's non-conference home game against Swarthmore College beginning at 4:30 p.m.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- 19th-ranked Elizabethtown College rode a strong defensive effort and two second-half goals to defeat Moravian College 3-0 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (5-0 overall) finished with a 24-2 edge in shots and a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners over the Greyhounds (1-3 overall) in posting their second consecutive shutout victory.

Elizabethtown got on the scoreboard at the 13:10 mark as senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) netted her fifth goal of the season. The Blue Jays added second-half goals from senior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) with 23:25 remaining and sophomore Ali Cavanaugh (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) with 12:17 left.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) needed to make just one save to finish off the shutout for Elizabethtown, while Maura Acox finished with 13 stops for the Greyhounds.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Three second-half goals boosted 19th-ranked Elizabethtown College to a 4-0 win over Juniata College in non-conference field hockey action at Wolf Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) finished with a goal and an assist for the Blue Jays (4-0 overall), who finished with a 15-1 advantage in shots over the Eagles (1-5 overall).

Junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) gave Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead just 2:47 into the contest with her fourth goal of the season off a feed by Angstadt, and the Blue Jays carried the lead into intermission despite firing eight shots at the Eagle cage.

In the second half, senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored her fourth of the year with an assist to junior Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) as the Blue Jays went ahead 2-0 with 30:18 to go.

Angstadt followed just under four minutes later with her second of the year off a pass from senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) to push Etown ahead 3-0, and junior Martina White (Philadelphia, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) capped the scoring with 21:07 to go with her first of the year on an assist from senior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) .

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) earned her first shutout of the year by making one save for the Blue Jays, while Abby Funk (one save), Moira Nugent (five saves) and Denalynn Spratt (one save) each saw time in the cage for the Eagles.

Field Hockey Ranked 19th in NFHCA Division III Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team is ranked 19th in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays have appeared in the national rankings in each of the last four seasons, and are off to a 3-0 start for the second time in the last three years.

Bowdoin College holds the top spot in this week's survey, followed by the College of New Jersey, Salisbury University, Messiah College and Lebanon Valley College.

Elizabethtown will host Juniata College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Wolf Field.

York match suspended in second half with Etown ahead 4-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Heavy rain and lightning forced the suspension of the non-conference field hockey match between York College and Elizabethtown College with 14:52 remaining in the second half, with the Blue Jays holding a 4-0 lead.

The contest was delayed 55 minutes by lightning at halftime, and again for 55 minutes in the second half before the teams agreed to suspend action. The game will be completed at a date to be determined.

Elizabethtown scored three times in the first half and once more in the second half to build their 4-0 lead, including a pair of goals from sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's).

LANCASTER, Pa. --- Seniors Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) each tallied a goal and an assist as Elizabethtown College improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory at Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) added her fourth goal in three games for the Blue Jays, who broke a 1-1 tie on goals by Miles and Angstadt in the final 23 minutes of the contest.

Elizabethtown led 1-0 at halftime as DeMatteis scored 14:26 into the match off an assist by Angstadt, but the Diplomats (0-1 overall) knotted the score 2:18 into the second half as Pam Cassidy tallied with an assist to Valerie Sauers.

Miles netted her third goal of the year with 22:16 remaining to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead, and Angstadt added her first of the year on a feed from Miles with 3:56 to go to close the scoring.

The Blue Jays finished with a 27-6 edge in shots over the Diplomats, and took 10 corners to four by Franklin & Marshall.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) gained the victory for the Blue Jays with two saves, while Jennifer Burdo made 12 stops for the Diplomats.

DeMatteis Named Commonwealth Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sophomore forward Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in field hockey for the week ending Aug. 31, the conference office announced Tuesday.

DeMatteis scored three goals and added an assist to help the Blue Jays to a pair of wins to open the 2008 season. She scored twice in a 4-2 victory over Misericordia University in the season opener on Friday afternoon, then added a goal and an assist in a 7-1 victory over Muhlenberg College on Saturday.

The Blue Jays, who are off to a 2-0 start for the fourth straight season, return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Franklin & Marshall College beginning at 4:30 p.m.

WHITEHALL, Pa. --- Senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and junior Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) each scored twice as part of a five-goal first half as Elizabethtown College cruised past Muhlenberg College 7-1 in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomores Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley), sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) andMeg Cassels (Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) also scored for the Blue Jays (2-0 overall), who finished with advantages of 24-4 in shots and 23-0 in penalty corners over the Mules (0-2 overall).

Noon and Miles each scored in the first six minutes to give Elizabethtown a 2-0 lead, and Foster tallied on a penalty stroke with 11:06 gone to push the Blue Jays ahead 3-0.

Miles and Noon each recorded their second goals of the afternoon later in the half as the Blue Jays took a 5-0 lead to halftime, on the strength of a 16-1 shot advantage.

DeMatteis scored her third goal in two matches with 11:34 remaining to extend the Elizabethtown margin to 6-0, before Courtney DeAngelis broke up the shutout for the Mules on a goal with 7:09 to go.

Cassels closed out the scoring with 3:16 to play, as seniorTiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) earned her second assist of the afternoon.

Foster and DeMatteis also recorded assists for the Blue Jays, as did senior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and junior Martina White (Philadelphia, PA/Villa Joseph Marie).

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made no saves in goal for the Blue Jays but picked up the win, while Michelle Consiglio finished with 10 stops for the Mules.

DeMatteis scores twice to lift Blue Jays past Misericordia 4-2

WHITEHALL, Pa. --- Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored a pair of first-half goals to give the Elizabethtown College field hockey team a 4-2 victory over Misericordia University in the opening round of the Muhlenberg Classic at Whitehall High School on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) picked up a pair of assists for the Blue Jays (1-0 overall), who defeated the Cougars (0-1 overall) in the season opener for the third straight year.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead just 5:05 into the first half on a goal by Camilla Hansen, but DeMatteis scored at 7:26 and 15:12 to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge.

Sophomore Ali Cavanaugh (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) extended the Etown lead to 3-1 at 25:53 with an assist to Foster, but Misericordia pulled within 3-2 with 7:05 left in the first half on a goal by Haley Ellis.

In the second half, the Blue Jays went ahead 4-2 with 11:34 to go as senior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored her first goal of the year with Foster picking up her second assist of the day.

Elizabethtown held a 20-7 edge in shots over Misericordia and took 12 penalty corners to three by the Cougars, scoring on three of them.

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made four saves in goal to earn the win for Elizabethtown, while Ellen Howanitz tallied six stops for Misericordia.

The Blue Jays will face host Muhlenberg Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on the final day of the Mule Classic.

2008 season preview now available

2008 Elizabethtown College Field Hockey Preview 

A veteran squad that features nine returning starters will look to lead the Elizabethtown College field hockey team in 2008, after the Blue Jays battled to an 11-8 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the challenging Commonwealth Conference in 2007.

The Blue Jays, who annually play one of the toughest schedules in Division III, went to overtime seven times during the 2007 season, including a pair of losses to eventual conference champion Messiah College.

Nearly all of the Blue Jays' offense returns for sixth-year head coach Sharon Sweger, as returning players accounted for 48 of the team's 53 goals last season.

Leading the Blue Jay attack is senior forward Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley), who paced the team with 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points last season. She is joined up front by fellow senior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep), who tallied eight goals and five assists, and juniorBrenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing), who added nine goals and two assists. Both Angstadt and Noon were second-team All-Conference choices last season.

Sophomore Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) came off the Etown bench to add six goals and an assist in 18 games, while junior Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) fired home four goals to go with a pair of assists.

In the midfield, seniors Kelsey Diehl (North East, MD/Rising Sun) and Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) return to the starting lineup, while sophomore Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) chipped in with five assists in a part-time starting role.

The defense lost two starters to graduation, but return seniorTiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) who had six goals and six assists, and junior first-team All-Conference selectionCaitlin Smith (Haddonfield, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep).

Junior Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) started 11 games before suffering a season-ending injury, and went 8-3 with four shutouts and a 1.21 goals against average.

The Blue Jays open their 2008 season on Friday, Aug. 29 against Misericordia University in the opening round of the Muhlenberg Classic. Elizabethtown's home opener is Saturday, Sept. 6 against York College and the first of six Commonwealth Conference games is Tuesday, Sept. 30 against Lebanon Valley College.

Field Hockey Tied for Second in Commonwealth Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College is tied for second in the 2008 Commonwealth Conference field hockey preseason coaches poll, as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays finished 11-8 overall and in third place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 2-2 record last season, and sixth-year head coach Sharon Sweger welcomes back nine starters and 12 letterwinners.

Among the top returnees are first-team All-Commonwealth Conference defender Caitlin Smith along with second-team forwards Megan Angstadt, who posted team highs of 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points, and Brenna Noon who added nine goals last season.

Junior goalkeeper Liz Hannegan also returns after posting an 8-3 record with four shutouts and a 1.21 goals against average in 11 games.

Earning the top spot in the poll was Lebanon Valley College, as the Dutchmen earned three first-place votes and 29 total points. The Blue Jays were tied with defending champion Messiah College at 25 points, with the Falcons taking two first-place votes and Elizabethtown one.

Rounding out the poll are Widener University (20 points), Albright College (15 points) and conference newcomer Arcadia University (11 points).

The Blue Jays open their 2008 season on Friday, Aug. 29 at 4:00 p.m. against Misericordia University in the Muhlenberg Classic at Whitehall High School.
