Paige Tanner named Commonwealth Conference Volleyball Player of the Week

Tanner Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in volleyball for the week ending Sept. 27, the conference office announced Monday.

Tanner averaged 4.06 kills and 3.41 digs per set in five matches last week as the Blue Jays went 4-1 overall, improved to 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with a win over Lycoming College on Tuesday and finished second at the Blue Jay Classic over the weekend.

After posting 14 kills in a 3-0 win over Lycoming, Tanner finished in double figures in kills in all four matches at the Blue Jay Classic, including 17 in a 3-2 win over Neumann College in which the Blue Jays came back from an 0-2 deficit.

She also became the 10th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs during the tournament as she posted seven digs in a 3-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University in the championship match to increase her career total to 1,002. For her efforts, Tanner was selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Blue Jays (10-9 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) return to conference play on Wednesday night at Arcadia University.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. ---The Elizabethtown College volleyball team advanced to the championship match of the Blue Jay Classic, but lost to Carnegie Mellon University by a 3-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium.

Earlier in the day, the Blue Jays advanced to the finals with a 3-0 win over Wilkes University to finish pool play with a perfect 3-0 record.

Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) and sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) were named to the All-Tournament team for their performance on the weekend. Tanner posted 55 kills and 50 digs and surpassed 1,000 career digs in the process, while Agnew handed out 120 assists and added 35 digs in four matches.

In the win over Wilkes (25-15, 25-17, 25-19), Tanner again led the Blue Jay attack with 13 kills to go with 11 digs. Junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) added five kills and six aces in the victory over the Lady Colonels (5-11 overall)

Against Carnegie Mellon, the Blue Jays (10-9 overall) lost 30-28, 25-20 and 25-19. Elizabethtown received 15 kills and seven digs from Tanner, increasing her career dig total to 1,002, while Agnew had 31 assists and Deats added five blocks, three aces and six digs.

Carnegie Mellon's Samantha Carter was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while joining Tanner and Agnew on the All-Tournament Team were Chisom Amaechi of Carnegie Mellon, Sarah Gregorini of St. Mary's College of Maryland and Meghan Wilson of Neumann College.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. ---The Elizabethtown College volleyball team opened play at the Blue Jay Classic with a pair of victories on Friday, defeating McDaniel College 3-0 before rallying from a two-set deficit to knock off Neumann College 3-2.

Against McDaniel, the Blue Jays rolled to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 victory over the Green Terror (5-6 overall), as junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led Elizabethtown with 10 kills and junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) added nine kills without an error in 16 attacks and added six blocks.

Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) paced the Blue Jays with 28 assists to go with nine digs, while first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) had a team-high 12 digs.

Taylor Herrgott led McDaniel with nine kills, while Kristen Nuckles had 18 assists and a match-high 13 digs for the Green Terror.

In the win over Neumann (5-7 overall), the Blue Jays (9-8 overall) won by scores of 15-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-22 and 15-10. Tanner led the Blue Jays with 17 kills and 24 digs, while first-year student Kelsey Hayes (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) had 11 kills without an error in 24 attacks.

Agnew added a career-high 45 assists and four blocks for the Blue Jays, while Deats chipped in with six kills and eight blocks and Weaver added 18 digs. Junior Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) also set a career high with 17 digs for Elizabethtown.

Ashley Mathis paced the Knights with 14 kills, with Julia Tarloski adding 12 kills and seven digs. Meghan Wilson had a match-high 31 digs for Neumann, with Kristen Verone adding 17 digs to go with 41 assists.

Elizabethtown is in first place in its pool with a 2-0 record after day one of the Blue Jay Classic, and concludes pool play with a match against Wilkes University at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday before playing a crossover match in the afternoon to wrap up action.

COLUMBUS, Oh. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team closed action at the Capital University Mid-Month Madness tournament on Saturday, losing 3-1 to Albion College and 3-0 to Denison University.

Against Albion (9-7 overall), the Blue Jays were defeated 21-25, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-15. Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led the Blue Jays with 11 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 21 assists and sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had 16 digs.

In the loss to Denison (3-7 overall), the Blue Jays (6-8 overall) fell by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18. Tanner led the Blue Jays with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Agnew added 30 assists and five blocks.

COLUMBUS, Oh. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday night at the Capital University Mid-Month Madness tournament, falling to 25th-ranked College of Mount St. Joseph and host Capital by identical 3-0 scores.

Against Mount St. Joseph (11-4 overall), the Blue Jays lost by set scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19. Junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) led with eight kills and six blocks while first-year student Andrea Weaver (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot) had a team-high 14 digs and sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) posted 25 assists.

In the setback to Capital (13-2 overall) by scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-17, junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led the Blue Jays with eight kills while Agnew recorded 22 assists and Weaver chipped in with a team-high eight digs.

The Blue Jays (6-6 overall) will conclude action at the tournament on Saturday, facing Albion College at 11:00 a.m. and Denison University at 1:00 p.m.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team finished with a 2-2 record at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic after splitting its two matches on Saturday. The Blue Jays defeated Randolph-Macon College 3-1 (25-20, 13-25, 25-15, 25-22) and lost to Neumann College 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22).

Against Randolph-Macon, the Blue Jays were paced by 14 kills and 12 digs from junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro), with junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) adding 11 kills. Sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) finished with 21 assists, five aces and 14 digs.

On defense, sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) finished with a team-best 16 digs, followed by junior Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) with 15 digs.

In the loss to Neumann, the Blue Jays (4-3 overall) received a team-high 10 kills from Tanner, while Ritchey led with 18 digs. Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led with 13 assists for the Blue Jays, while Deats had six blocks.

Tanner was one of 12 players named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Blue Jays with 41 kills while adding 33 digs in 16 games.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team split two matches on the opening day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic on Friday, defeating the Catholic University of America 3-1 before dropping a tough 3-2 decision to Frostburg State University.

In the victory over Catholic (25-9, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20), junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) and sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely) shared the team lead with seven kills, while sophomore Kara Burkholder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) had 14 assists and senior Corin Kidwell (Akron, PA/Ephrata) posted a team-high 14 digs.

In the loss to Frostburg State (25-20, 21-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-13), the Blue Jays (3-2 overall) saw Northway and junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) post 11 kills each, while Burkholder added 25 assists and 11 digs and Tanner finished with 10 digs. Sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) led the Blue Jays with 18 digs while Deats had a team-high five blocks.

Elizabethtown will face Randolph-Macon College in the second day of the tournament beginning at 12 noon on Saturday, followed at 2:00 p.m. with a match against Neumann College in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Tournament opener, won 3-0 by the Blue Jays.

YORK, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team split two matches to open its 2008 season on Saturday, defeating Swarthmore College 3-0 and falling to York College 3-1.

In the win over Swarthmore (25-13, 25-18, 25-11), sophomore Molly Northway (Cumberland, ME/Greely) led the Blue Jays with eight kills while junior Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro) and first-year student Kelsey Hayes (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) had four kills each.

Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro)finished with eight digs and three kills, and sophomore Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had seven digs to go along with four aces. Sophomore Crystal Agnew (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) dished out 15 assists for the Blue Jays.

Against York, the Blue Jays (1-1 overall) fell 25-23, 25-27, 25-12 and 25-14 to the host Spartans (2-0 overall), and were led by 10 kills and 10 digs from Tanner, while Ritchey had a team-high 12 digs. Hayes chipped in with seven kills and Agnew led the team with 22 assists.

Volleyball Picked Third in Commonwealth Coaches Poll

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Defending Commonwealth Conference champion Elizabethtown College has been picked to finish third in the conference's preseason coaches poll, as voted upon by the league's seven head coaches and released Wednesday.

The Blue Jays, who finished 32-7 overall and 5-0 in the conference en route to the first conference championship and second NCAA Division III tournament appearance in program history.

With the loss of five seniors, including four starters, the Blue Jays will look to rebuild under the leadership of head coachRandall Kreider, who is the two-time defending conference Coach of the Year.

Junior outside hitter Paige Tanner was a second-team All-Conference pick last season after finishing with 369 kills (2.84 per game) and 481 digs (3.80 per game). Junior middle hitterKayla Deats added 221 kills (1.66 per game) and 109 blocks (0.82 per game) while sophomore defensive specialist Allie Gold was among the team leaders with 439 digs (3.43 per game).

Lebanon Valley College, which was the conference runner-up last season, took five of the seven first-place votes in the poll for a total of 42 points, followed by Messiah College, which got the other two first-place votes and 36 points, and the Blue Jays with 35 points.

Widener University was fourth with 27 points, followed by Albright College and Lycoming College in a tie for fifth with 21 points and newcomer Arcadia University in seventh with 15 points.

The Blue Jays open their 2008 schedule on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the York College Quadrangular with a match against Swarthmore College at noon.
