LAKEWOOD, N.J. --- A two-out error in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and helped Elizabethtown College to a 5-2 victory over Montclair State University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament at FirstEnergy Park on Wednesday evening.

Adam Hartzell (9-2) worked into the ninth inning to earn the victory for the sixth-seeded Blue Jays (28-13), who advance to play on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. against Keystone College, which defeated Alvernia University 2-1 in Wednesday's late game with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

The third-seeded Red Hawks (26-18) overcame a 2-0 deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but left runners on third base in the fifth, sixth and eighth to fall into the loser's bracket, where they will face Alvernia on Thursday at 1:15 in an elimination game.

"We got some timely hits tonight, and were very aggressive on the basepaths," said Elizabethtown head coach Cliff Smith. "We made the plays we needed to make, and didn't shoot ourselves in the foot. Adam Hartzell showed too why he's one of the best in the region with his performance on the mound against a quality opponent."

Sam Heaps went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Blue Jays, who won their NCAA tournament opener for just the third time in 10 all-time appearances. Rodney Francis stole two bases and scored a pair of runs for Elizabethtown, while Adam Sheibley scored twice and swiped three bags to boost his season total to 50, which leads all divisions of the NCAA.

Jay Bionde and Scott Evangelist had RBI singles for the Red Hawks while Zachary Brown went 4-for-4 for Montclair State, which finished with 11 hits as a team but left nine runners on base.

With the game tied 2-2 in the eighth, the Blue Jays had runners at second and third with two outs for Matt Vinagro, whose grounder to short was bobbled by Bionde to allow Brian Kiernan to cross the plate with the go-ahead run. Elizabethtown added two insurance runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Tom Semanek and a bases-loaded walk to Kiernan to take a 5-2 lead.

Hartzell issued his first walk of the night to lead off the bottom of the ninth, and was removed after 123 pitches in favor of Vinagro. After a single and a forceout, Vinagro struck out Bionde and Michael Boggi to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Francis reached on a two-base error by Red Hawk left fielder Ed Kloepping and scored on a single to left by Heaps.

Elizabethtown extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth as Sheibley drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Heaps.

Montclair State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth on three consecutive singles, but Hartzell induced a force out at the plate and a popup to avoid damage.

The Red Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Boggi led off with a double and came home on a single by Evangelist, and knotted the game in the seventh as Brown singled with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single to right by Bionde.

Michael Streaman started for Montclair State and allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in 4 1/3 innings of work while striking out six. John Masklee (5-5), the second of five pitchers for the Red Hawks, took the loss after giving up an unearned run on one hit in three innings. In all, the Red Hawk staff struck out 12 batters on the night but issued seven bases on balls.

In other tournament action earlier Wednesday, College of New Jersey defeated Penn State Behrend 13-1 in the opener while top-seeded Kean University shut out Penn State Berks 10-0 as Colin Feneis threw a one-hitter and struck out 15.

WEST LAWN, Pa. --- Tournament Most Valuable Player Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) threw his second complete game in less than 24 hours as Elizabethtown College defeated Widener University 12-5 to win the Commonwealth Conference baseball championship at Owls Field on Saturday.

The Blue Jays (27-13 overall) won four elimination games in a span of 30 hours to win their third conference title in four years and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball tournament, which begins May 13.

Vinagro (8-1) threw 18 innings in a span of just under 20 hours, tossing a five-hit shutout against Albright College in a loser's bracket game that ended at 12:35 on Saturday morning, and coming back just 15 hours later to pitch the Blue Jays to the championship.

Playing out of the loser's bracket, Elizabethtown defeated Widener 6-4 earlier Saturday to force the if-necessary game, as junior Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Game two was all Elizabethtown as the Blue Jays scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and belted 14 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance from senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) and two hits each from four other players.

In Saturday's first game, the Blue Jays went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Heaps, but the Pride tied the score in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Colin McHale.

Elizabethtown took a 3-1 lead in the third on an error and a wild pitch, only to see Widener pull within 3-2 in the third on an RBI single by Dan Sieracki and go ahead 4-3 in the fourth on a two-run single by Sean Saverio.

The Blue Jays regained the lead in the sixth as a sacrifice fly by senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) tied the game at 4-4 and Francis launched his third home run of the year to push Elizabethtown on top 6-4.

First-year student Todd Leister (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) came on in the bottom of the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings for his second save of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair. Junior Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) allowed two runs in two innings or relief, but was credited with his eighth win of the season.

Senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch and scored two runs while stealing four bases for the Blue Jays. Seven different players accounted for the Blue Jays' seven hits in the contest.

In game two, Elizabethtown scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning on an error, an RBI double by Heaps, a two-run home run from senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) and an RBI single by Luff.

Widener got on the board in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run from Mike Villari, but Elizabethtown answered with two runs in the home half of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single by junior Brian Kiernan (Garden City, NY/Garden City).

The Blue Jays put the game out of reach with three runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead, as Sheibley had a two-run single and Heaps added an RBI single. The teams traded runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, while the Pride tacked on a run in the ninth to close the scoring.

Sheibley went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in the second game for Elizabethtown, giving him a Division III-best 47 stolen bases for the season. He trails only Rashad Ingram of Division II St. Augustine's College, who finished the year with 48 steals, for the overall NCAA lead.

Kiernan, Luff and sophomore Anthony Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) each went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays while Dennis Morgan led Widener by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and scored the eventual winning run on a throwing error in the seventh inning as Elizabethtown College defeated Lebanon Valley College 4-3 in the opening game of their Commonwealth Conference baseball series on Friday afternoon.

Senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) scattered four hits and struck out seven in a complete-game performance as the Blue Jays (22-10 overall, 11-2 Commonwealth) moved two games ahead of the Dutchmen (18-16-1 overall, 9-4 Commonwealth) in the standings with two games to play. The teams meet Saturday at noon in Annville for a doubleheader, and the Blue Jays need just one win to gain the top seed for next week's conference tournament.

Heaps, who improved to 6-1 on the season, also helped himself with the bat by going 3-for-4 at the plate and in the field by handling seven chances without an error, including five comebackers, a line drive and a popup.

Joe Soupik hit a two-run home run for Lebanon Valley in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, and after a hit batsman Heaps retired the final 10 Dutchmen without a ball leaving the infield.

The Blue Jays used their speed to generate the winning run in the seventh inning, as Sheibley reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. junior Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) followed with a walk, and on a double steal attempt the throw to third went into left field, allowing Sheibley to cross with the go-ahead run.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning against Lebanon Valley starter Caleb Fick (1-1) as Francis reached on an infield single with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a single by Heaps and scored on a groundout by senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban).

Elizabethtown added two unearned runs in the second as junior Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) reached on an error to lead off the frame, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove). Sheibley followed with a triple to left-center to drive home Luff and give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

Heaps set down the first eight Dutchmen batters, including four via strikeout, before a four-pitch walk to Brent Ruminski with two outs in the third. After another walk to Dustin Deibert, Grant Wiest singled up the middle to drive home Ruminski with Lebanon Valley's first run. Heaps avoided further damage by spearing a liner by Colt Zarilla to end the inning.

After the Blue Jays failed to convert on a scoring opportunity in the fifth, the Dutchmen tied the game in the top of the sixth as Zarilla doubled with two out and scored on a towering home run to right by Soupik, his seventh of the season.

Francis went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored for the Blue Jays, while no player on the Dutchmen had more than one hit on the afternoon. Fick worked seven innings for Lebanon Valley, allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits while walking four and striking out four.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior righthander Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was named the Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week in baseball for the week ending April 19, the conference office announced Monday.

CHESTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College swept a Commonwealth Conference baseball doubleheader at Widener University on Saturday, winning 4-0 in the opener behind a two-hitter from junior Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and taking game two 8-5 as junior Brian Kiernan (Garden City, NY/Garden City) went 3-for-4 with a home run.

With the sweep, the Blue Jays (21-10 overall, 10-2 Commonwealth) moved one game ahead of Lebanon Valley College (9-3) for first place in the conference standings. The teams finish the regular season with three games next weekend - a single game at Elizabethtown on Friday and a doubleheader in Annville on Saturday.

In game one, Hartzell (6-2) was dominant as he allowed just two hits and struck out seven to lower his earned run average to a conference-best 1.47. Hartzell has thrown six complete games in his seven starts, allowing no more than two runs in any of his starts, and in 55 innings of work has allowed just 31 hits and seven walks while striking out 49 batters.

Hartzell received early support as the Blue Jays scored twice in the first inning and single runs in the second and sixth, finishing with nine hits despite striking out 10 times against Pride starter Dan Gross (2-4).

Junior Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener for the Blue Jays, while senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) and Kiernan each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Heaps' first hit of the day was the 100th of his career.

Elizabethtown scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) and Kiernan, and extended its lead to 3-0 in the second as senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk by Gross.

The Blue Jays closed the scoring in the sixth as Francis doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Heaps.

In game two, the Blue Jays scored single runs in the second through fifth innings then plated four in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead, only to see the Pride (16-14-1 overall, 6-6 Commonwealth) score once in the sixth and twice in the seventh before leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Kiernan hit a solo home run in the second and added an RBI single in the fifth to lead the Blue Jay attack, while sophomore Andrew Gordon (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) went 2-for-3 and junior Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) finished 2-for-4 in the contest.

Dennis Morgan went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Pride in the nightcap, with Sean Saverio finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and Josiah Fischer going 2-for-4.

Widener took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Saverio off Elizabethtown junior Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford), but the Blue Jays tied the game at 1-1 in the second as Kiernan led off with a home run. Sheibley single-handedly gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead in the third as he walked, stole second and third, then stole home as part of a double steal with Gordon.

Sheibley's three stolen bases in the inning increased his career total to 78, breaking the program career record of 76 set by Mike Gore from 1985-88. Sheibley also boosted his season total to 34, just four shy of the program single-season record of 38 set in 1983 by Charlie Artz.

Morgan knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third with a two-out home run, but the Blue Jays went back on top 3-2 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Francis. Kiernan's RBI single in the fifth pushed the Elizabethtown lead to 4-2, and in the sixth the Blue Jays struck for four runs on RBI singles by Francis, Gordon and Heaps and a sacrifice fly by Semanek.

Widener pushed home a run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice to move within 8-3, and in the ninth pulled within 8-4 as two walks and a single set up a bases-loaded walk to Bill Hollingsworth with one out.

First-year student Todd Leister (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) came on and recorded a strikeout, but then allowed a single to Morgan to cut the Blue Jay lead to 8-5. However, Leister retired Tom Mahoney on a fly ball to Sheibley in left to end the game and earn his first save.

Vinagro (5-1) allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six over six innings to pick up the win for Elizabethtown, while Mike Pappas (3-2) surrendered four hits and four walks in three innings to take the loss for Widener.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College baseball team will play the Lancaster Barnstormers in an exhibition game at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Thursday, April 16 beginning at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Barnstormers, members of the Atlantic League, will welcome the Blue Jays in the first of six exhibition games prior to their season opener against the Newark Bears on Thursday, April 23.

Elizabethtown head coach Cliff Smith is a former member of the Barnstormers, having pitched in 33 games for the team in their inaugural season of 2005. Last season, he led the Blue Jays to a 26-12 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the Commonwealth Conference.

"Playing in a facility like Clipper Magazine Stadium against the kind of professionals on the Barnstormers is something pro athletes sometimes take for granted," Smith said. "This was an experience for our team that we just couldn't pass up."

Lancaster will also play Franklin & Marshall College in an exhibition on Monday, April 20 in addition to two games each against Atlantic League rivals Somerset Patriots and York Revolution.
