ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior center Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) and sophomore swingman Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) have been named to the All-Commonwealth Conference men's basketball team, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Church was a first-team selection while Flanagan was named to the second team, as the Blue Jays finished 14-12 overall (7-5 Commonwealth) and advanced to the conference championship game for the first time since 2004.

Church averaged 12.8 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game, and scored in double figures 19 times in 26 games. He ranks eighth in the conference in scoring average and sixth in rebounding average, and averaged 1.5 blocked shots per game to lead the conference for the second straight season.

Flanagan led the Blue Jays in scoring at 14.3 points per game, and made a team-high 53 three-pointers in 127 attempts (41.7 percent). He scored in double figures 21 times in 26 games, including five games of 20 points or better, and made at least one three-pointer in all but one game. He ranks fifth in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring, seventh in three-pointers per game and sixth in three-point percentage (41.7 percent).

Charles Jones of conference champion Widener University was named Player of the Year, while the Pride's Chris Carideo was honored as Coach of the Year. Lebanon Valley College's Joe Meehan took home the Rookie of the Year award.

CHESTER, Pa. --- Top-seeded Widener University won the Commonwealth Conference men's basketball championship with a 67-65 victory over Elizabethtown College in the title game at the Schwartz Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Pride (22-5 overall) won their third consecutive Commonwealth Conference championship and earned the 17th NCAA tournament berth in program history, while the Blue Jays (14-12 overall) were denied in their bid to win their first conference title since 2004.

Charles Jones was named tournament Most Valuable Player for the Pride after finishing with 12 points and six rebounds in the title game, while Jamarr Johnson scored six of his 12 points in the final four minutes to thwart a late Blue Jay comeback bid.

Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) scored a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and five assists for Elizabethtown, while Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) netted 17 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. However, the Blue Jays committed 21 turnovers and went just 3-for-7 at the foul line while the Pride finished 14-for-19 from the stripe.

Widener scored the game's first seven points, and took its biggest lead of the day at 33-21 on two foul shots by Johnson with 5:59 left in the first half. Elizabethtown closed the first half on an 18-7 run, capped by a three-pointer by Fogel as time expired to bring the Blue Jays within 40-39 at intermission.

Church led all players with 13 points and five rebounds in the first half, while Fogel went 3-for-4 from three-point range and tallied 11 points for the Blue Jays as part of a 53.3 percent (16-for-30) team shooting effort. Jones paced the Pride with nine points, as Widener shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from the field.

The Blue Jays took their first lead of the day at 41-40 on a layup by Fogel 29 seconds into the second half, and held a 43-40 advantage following a putback by Church with 18:09 to play. Widener answered with six straight points to take a 46-43 lead with 16:54 to go, and the teams exchanged the lead several times over the next couple minutes.

Widener went ahead for good at 54-51 following a three-pointer by Chris McDevitt with 13:07 left, sparking an 8-0 run that ended with the Pride holding a 59-51 advantage with 11:44 to play.

Elizabethtown crept back to within two at 61-59 on a three-pointer by Fogel with 7:21 to go, but went scoreless over the next five minutes on four missed shots and two turnovers.

The Blue Jays again cut the Pride lead to two at 63-61 as Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) hit a basket with 2:38 to go to snap the scoring drought, but Johnson responded with back-to-back steals and baskets to give Widener a 67-61 lead with 1:20 remaining.

Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) connected on a basket with 43 seconds remaining to shave the Widener lead to 67-63, and Fogel nailed a jumper with 6.2 seconds to go to pull Elizabethtown within 67-65.

A missed foul shot by Widener's Matt Sosna with 4.3 seconds left gave the Blue Jays life, but a desperation inbounds pass from midcourt with 0.4 seconds left went awry and the Pride came away with the title.

Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) also finished in double figures for Elizabethtown with 12 points, while Sosna tallied 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The Blue Jays finished at 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the field as a team while Widener cooled off to 40.0 percent (22-for-55) after going 10-for-30 in the second half.

Elizabethtown and Widener to Meet in Commonwealth Finals

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team will travel to Widener University for the Commonwealth Conference championship on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The Blue Jays (14-11 overall), seeded third in the four-team tournament, advanced to the finals with a 68-64 victory at Albright College on Wednesday night, while the top-seeded Pride (21-5 overall) defeated Messiah College 76-61 in the other semifinal contest.

Admission to Saturday's game at the Schwartz Center is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students, with children under six admitted free of charge. The winner will receive an automatic bid to next week's NCAA Division III tournament.

Saturday's game will be played exactly five years to the day of Elizabethtown's last appearance in the championship game, a 61-54 victory at Widener on Feb. 28, 2004 that gave the Blue Jays their third straight conference title.

In addition to the Commonwealth Conference titles in 2002, 2003 and 2004, Elizabethtown won Middle Atlantic Conference championships in 1964 and 1979. Widener will be seeking its third consecutive conference crown and 15th overall conference championship in program history.

The teams have met four times in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs since 2001, with Elizabethtown winning in the 2002 and 2004 finals and Widener winning in the 2001 finals and 2006 semifinals. All but the 2002 championship game were played at Widener.

Widener, which went 10-2 in the Commonwealth Conference during the regular season, swept the season series from Elizabethtown, which went 7-5 in conference play. The Pride won 80-69 at Thompson Gymnasium on Jan. 17 and held on for a 66-62 victory at the Schwartz Center on Feb. 7.

Sophomore swingman Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) leads the Blue Jays in scoring at 14.6 points per game and has connected on a team-high 52 three-pointers. Junior center Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) has added 12.7 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) is averaging 12.5 points per game with 38 three-pointers and a team-high 53 steals.

Leading the Pride is senior guard Charles Jones, who leads the Commonwealth Conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game to go with a team-high 78 assists. Senior forward Matt Sosna is second on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game. He is shooting 61.1 percent from the field (138-for-226) to lead the conference, with junior forward Jamarr Johnson ranking second at 56.9 percent (82-for-144).

READING, Pa. --- For the first time since 2004, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team will play for the Commonwealth Conference championship as the Blue Jays defeated host Albright College 68-64 in a semifinal game at the Bollman Center on Wednesday night.

The Blue Jays (14-11 overall) will travel to top-seeded Widener University for Saturday's championship game at 3:00 p.m. after the Pride defeated Messiah College 76-61 in Wednesday's other semifinal contest.

Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) scored 17 points to lead the Blue Jays, who held the Lions (17-9 overall) to 28.1 percent shooting (9-for-32) from the field in the second half, including 13 straight misses to open the half, after shooting 59.3 percent (16-for-27) in the opening 20 minutes.

Phil Hall led the Lions with game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, but Albright could not turn a 43-28 rebounding advantage to their benefit. The Lions were also plagued by 16 turnovers while the Blue Jays committed just nine miscues.

Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) added 13 points for the Blue Jays while Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) tallied 12 points and a team-high six rebounds for Elizabethtown, which will play for its first conference title since winning the last of three in a row in 2004.

Trailing 55-50 with 7:12 to play, the Lions tied the game at 57-57 on a reverse layup by Hall with 4:48 to play, only to see Church put the Blue Jays back on top 61-57 courtesy of two foul shots with 4:29 remaining and a reverse layup with 3:39 left.

Albright responded with five straight points to take a 62-61 lead on a layup by Zac Shaeffer with 2:01 remaining, but backup center Bryan Harrity (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) hit a baseline jumper with 1:29 to go to put Elizabethtown back on top for good at 63-62.

After Hall misfired on the potential go-ahead basket, Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) hit the Blue Jays' biggest shot of the season as he canned a three-pointer with 48.7 seconds left to give Elizabethtown a 66-62 lead.

Matt Bazsika put back a missed three-pointer with 35.5 seconds left to bring Albright back within 66-64, but Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) hit a foul shot with 34.7 seconds to play to give Elizabethtown a three-point lead.

Looking for the tie, the Lions threw the ball away under their own basket with 22.8 seconds to go, and Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) drilled a foul shot with 22.0 seconds remaining to push the Etown lead to 68-64. Two last-ditch field-goal attempts by the Lions were not close, and the Blue Jays came away with the win.

Both teams set a blistering pace from the field in the opening 10 minutes, each shooting over 50 percent from the floor as Albright held a 23-22 lead with 8:54 left in the first half despite 10 points from Fogel.

Albright led 37-33 at halftime as Hall hit his first six shots from the field en route to a game-high 12 points, while Fogel finished with 10 points to pace Elizabethtown.

The Lions cooled off from the field to open the second half, missing their first 13 field-goal attempts and going scoreless for 8 minutes, 13 seconds while the Blue Jays scored 12 of the half's first 14 points to take a 45-39 lead with 11:32 to go on a three-pointer by Mark Vogel (Landisville, PA/Hempfield).

Hall finally connected on Albright's first field goal of the second half with 10:27 to go to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 47-43, but a basket by Church and a three-pointer by Flanagan gave the Blue Jays a 52-45 lead with 9:43 to play.

Albright fought back with five unanswered points to cut the Blue Jay lead to 52-50 with 9:03 remaining, but Church converted a three-point play with 7:12 to go to extend the Blue Jay advantage to 55-50.

Also scoring in double figures for Albright were Andre Murphy with 11 points and Baszika with 10 points to go with five rebounds.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Kevin Conroy posted game highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead King's College to a 72-54 victory over Elizabethtown College in men's basketball action at the Wilkes-Barre Challenge on Sunday afternoon at Wilkes University.

Chase McGowan added 12 points while Jim Schule had 10 points and six rebounds for the Monarchs (6-5 overall), who won for the second time in less than 24 hours following a five-game losing streaak.

Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) was the lone player in double figures for the Blue Jays (6-6 overall) as he came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points, including three three-pointers. However, the Blue Jays shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the field and recorded a season low in points.

The Monarchs built a 40-28 lead at halftime by shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the field, and led by as many as 19 points in the second half. King's took advantage of a 25-14 foul disparity to go 22-for-26 from the free-throw line compared to 9-for-15 by Elizabethtown.

King's finished the game with a 42-27 edge in rebounding, with Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) leading Elizabethtown with five boards. The Blue Jays committed just nine turnovers as a team, while the Monarchs were guilty of 15 miscues.

Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) finished with nine points in 24 minutes for Elizabethtown, the first time in 12 games this season he failed to reach double figures. Flanagan and McConnell were each selected to the All-Tournament team.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Keith Fogel (Mifllinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as Elizabethtown College edged Wilkes University 71-69 in men's basketball action at the Marts Center on Saturday night as part of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge.

Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) each added 15 points for the Blue Jays (6-5 overall), who snapped a three-game losing streak in winning for the first time since a 70-65 victory at Millersville University exactly one month earlier.

Chris DeRojas paced the Colonels (5-3 overall) with a game-high 27 points, including six three-pointers, but scored just five points in the second half. Steve Kline added 19 points and eight rebounds for Wilkes, which finished 7-for-29 from  three-point range as a team.

Despite making just one field goal in a span of five minutes midway through the second half and none in the final 5:06, the Blue Jays were able to convert a 54-54 tie into an eight-point lead by holding the Colonels without a basket for four minutes during the same stretch.

Elizabethtown led 69-61 following two foul shots by Church with 4:05 to go, but Wilkes pulled to within 69-66 on a three-pointer by Chris Gulla with 3:04 left and a layup by Tom Kresge with 1:06 remaining.

Flanagan, who scored in double figures for the 11th time in as many games this season, sank two foul shots with 10 seconds to play to give the Blue Jays a 71-66 lead. DeRojas nailed a three-pointer with six seconds left to bring the Colonels back within two, but Wilkes would not regain possession.

Both teams shot 16-for-32 from the field and made five three-pointers in the first half, but two extra foul shots by the Blue Jays gave them a 41-39 lead at intermission. Flanagan led the Blue Jays with 13 points while DeRojas went 5-for-10 from beyond the arc and scored 22 points for the Colonels.

Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) added eight points and five rebounds for the Blue Jays, while Chris Fairbanks (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) came off the Etown bench to score six points apiece.

Elizabethtown will battle King's College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the Marts Center in the second half of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge. The Monarchs traveled across town to defeat Ramapo College 75-74 in Saturday's opening game.
