Cross country teams earn USTFCCCA academic honors

Elizabethtown Honored on USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's cross country teams have been honored by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as All-Academic Team members for the 2008 season.

The Blue Jays are among 103 men's teams and 156 women's teams recognized by the USTFCCCA for having a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade-point average while competing and scoring at an NCAA Regional Meet.

In addition, four members of the men's cross country team and two members of the women's team were recognized as members of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 2008 season, for maintaining cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or better and finishing in the top 25 percent of the field at the NCAA Mideast Regional Meet. A total of 132 men and 221 women were named to the All-Academic Team.

Seniors Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) and Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton), sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) and first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) were named to the men's All-Academic Team while senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) and junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) were honored on the women's All-Academic Team.

Derkacz, a history and religion major, finished 59th at regionals in 27:05 while Matula, a political philosophy major, placed 45th with a time of 26:47. Heisey, majoring in biology, took 41st place in 26:41 and Reichert, who has not declared a major, placed 27th with a time of 26:18.

Elizabethtown's four men's honorees were tied with Nebraska Wesleyan University and Wisconsin-Platteville for the second-most behind Haverford College, which had six.

Kulp, a biochemistry major, finished sixth at regionals with a time of 22:29 to qualify for the NCAA Division III championships, while VanDenHengel, an elementary education major, placed 22nd in a time of 23:26 to earn All-Region honors.
