Back to top 6/5/2009 Terry Corcoran to help pick US Men's Lacrosse World Team FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 5, 2009 Corcoran to Help Pick US Men's Lacrosse World Team Corcoran, an assistant coach on the 1990 US team that won the World Championship at Perth, Australia, will help choose the team that will look to regain the championship after its streak of six straight gold medals was snapped by Canada in 2006. Corcoran recently completed his fourth season as head coach at Elizabethtown, having led the Blue Jays to a school-record 12 victories and a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference semifinals. In 27 years as a collegiate head coach, Corcoran has accumulated 224 victories to rank among the top 10 in Division III history. Under his tutelage in 2009, Elizabethtown led 151 Division III programs in scoring defense by allowing just 5.63 goals per game. The Blue Jays allowed three or fewer goals in seven of their 16 games, and surrendered more than eight goals just three times. The Blue Jays, who lose just four seniors to graduation, also ranked eighth in scoring margin at plus 6.44 goals per game, scoring 193 goals while allowing just 90 over 16 games. Individually, junior attack Aaron Weber ranked 13th in points per game (4.56) and 18th in goals per game (3.0) and sophomore midfielder Brent Campbell was 11th in faceoff win percentage at 65.1 percent, winning 123 of 189 draws. Back to top 5/6/2009 Three men's lax players named All-MAC FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, May 6, 2009 Men's Lacrosse Has Three Named to All-MAC Team Junior attack Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and junior defender Chris Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) were first-team selections while junior midfielder Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) was a second-team pick. Together, they led the Blue Jays to a 12-4 overall record and fourth place in the MAC with a 7-3 record, setting a program single-season record for victories. Weber, a first-team All-MAC pick for the second straight year, tied the program single-season record for goals with 48 and broke his own record for points with 73. He scored at least one goal in all 16 games and netted five game-winning goals on the season. He also broke the program career record for points with 181 and became the third player in school history to reach 100 career goals with 105. Chris Day started all 16 games and finished with 28 ground balls, and led a Blue Jay defense corps that leads NCAA Division III in scoring defense at 5.62 goals per game. In 45 career games, Chris Day has recorded 123 ground balls. Jon Day also started all 16 games and tallied 11 goals and five assists for 16 points, to go with 49 ground balls which tied for second on the team. In 45 career games, he has 35 goals and 10 assists for 45 points and ranks seventh in program history with 176 ground balls. Back to top 4/29/2009 Men's lacrosse edged 10-8 by FDU-Florham in MAC semifinals ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE FDU-Florham 10, Elizabethtown 8 The top-seeded Devils (12-4 overall) swung a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead over the final three minutes of the second quarter with a four-goal outburst, and held off a late rally by the fourth-seeded Blue Jays (12-4 overall) to move into Saturday's championship game against third-seeded Widener University, which upset second-seeded Lycoming College 15-9 in Wednesday's other semifinal game. Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) led the Blue Jays attack with three goals and three assists, and finished the season with 48 goals to match the program single-season record set in 2006 by Frankie Puzzangara. Weber's six points boosted his season total to 73, breaking his own school record of 71 set in 2007. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) also scored three goals for the Blue Jays, while sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) also tallied for Elizabethtown. Drew Canfield posted two goals and an assist for the Devils, while Will Stark, Peter Fleming and Jason Koontz also scored goals in the victory for FDU, which scored three times on four man-up opportunities. The Devils led 2-1 as Shadiack scored twice and Weber once during the opening quarter. After Koontz gave FDU-Florham a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, McCafferty tallied twice and Kenneally once to send the Blue Jays on top 4-3 with 4:33 left in the half. However, the Devils struck for four goals over the final 3:05 of the quarter, as Shadiack, Fleming, Canfield and Stark all scored to push FDU-Florham to a 7-4 halftime lead. Shadiack scored his fourth of the night midway through the third quarter to give the Devils an 8-4 lead, and the quarter ended with Weber and Canfield swapping scores to leave FDU with a 9-5 advantage. Trailing by four goals, the Blue Jays struck early in the final period on goals by Staulters and Weber to trail 9-7 with 7:07 left. McCafferty's third goal of the day with 4:52 left brought Elizabethtown within one, but the Devils won the ensuing faceoff and Shadiack closed out the scoring with 3:30 to go. Sophomore Mike Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Towson) led all players with five ground balls on the evening for the Blue Jays, while Mike Patella finished with a game-high four caused turnovers for the Devils. Back to top 4/29/2009 Brendan Corcoran named MAC Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, April 29, 2009 Brendan Corcoran Named MAC Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College first-year student Brendan Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Western Reserve Academy) was honored as the Middle Atlantic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week in men's lacrosse for the week ending April 26, the MAC office has announced. Corcoran allowed just three goals in 87 minutes as the Blue Jays locked up the #4 seed in the MAC playoffs with wins over Messiah (12-2) and Misericordia (15-3). Corcoran made eight saves in 60 minutes against Messiah, and came up with three stops and gave up one goal in 27 minutes against Misericordia.The Blue Jays rank among the NCAA Division III leaders with a 5.57 team goals against average, helped by Corcoran's 3.17 goals against average in 190 minutes of playing time. Back to top 4/27/2009 Men's lacrosse advances with 9-2 win over DeSales ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 9, DeSales 2 Weber became the third player in program history to reach 100 career goals in the victory for the fourth-seeded Blue Jays (12-3 overall), who advance to play at top-seeded FDU-Florham in a semifinal game on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. It is Elizabethtown's fifth trip to the conference semifinals in the past six years. The Blue Jays outshot the Bulldogs (6-10 overall) by a 33-4 margin in the first half en route to building an 8-1 lead at intermission. For the game, Elizabethtown finished with a 42-17 edge in shots over DeSales. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) added two goals for the Blue Jays while junior Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) had a goal and an assist. Single goals came from sophomores Brian Schaaf (West Chester, PA/West Chester East), Shawn Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Hershey) and Ben Landis (Talmage, PA/Conestoga Valley). Schaaf opened the scoring 2:27 into the contest with his fifth goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield). Weber netted his 100th career tally with 10:23 left in the first quarter to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. DeSales appeared to get on the scoreboard just 15 seconds later as Kevin Walker won a faceoff and went the distance for the goal, but he was penalized for using an illegal stick which wiped out the goal and gave Elizabethtown a three-minute man advantage. Another DeSales penalty left Elizabethtown two men up, and Landis put home a rebound as Walker's penalty expired to give Elizabethtown a 3-0 lead. McCafferty pushed the Blue Jay lead to 4-0 with 2:09 left in the quarter, before Joshua Van Hart got the Bulldogs on the board with 1:16 left. Day closed out the five-goal frame for Elizabethtown with 26 seconds left to give the Blue Jays a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes. The Blue Jays netted all three goals in the second quarter, as Weber scored with 9:55 left and 4:11 left and assisted on a goal by Corcoran with just 3.8 seconds to go in the half. Andrew Ervin scored five minutes into the third quarter to pull the Bulldogs within 8-2, but McCafferty scored with 6:50 left in the period to give Elizabethtown a 9-2 lead and the teams failed to add any more goals over the final 22 minutes. He also moved within one of becoming the third player in program history to score 100 career goals. With the victory, the Blue Jays (11-3 overall, 7-3 MAC) broke the program single-season record for wins in a season of 10 set during the 2007 season. Back to top 4/22/2009 Men's lacrosse wins at Messiah to clinch playoff berth ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 12, Messiah 2 The Blue Jays (10-3 overall, 6-3 MAC) clinched a MAC playoff spot with the victory, tied the program record for wins in a season and defeated the Falcons (7-6 overall, 5-4 MAC) for just the second time in 10 meetings. Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) added three goals and two assists and junior Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) finished with a pair of goals as the Blue Jays overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring eight straight goals from the midpoint of the first quarter to the middle of the third quarter. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal by Brent Stewart with 8:16 left in the first quarter, but McCafferty scored twice and Weber once to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield), Day and junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) recorded goals to extend the Blue Jay advantage to 6-1 at halftime. McCafferty and Weber scored early in the third quarter to give Elizabethtown an 8-1 lead before Phil Wendt broke the Falcon drought on a goal with 4:49 left in the third quarter. It was the fourth time in his career that Weber has scored five or more goals in a game, while his four assists were one shy of a career high set twice. The Blue Jays (9-3 overall, 5-3 MAC) dominated the Crusaders (2-10 overall, 0-8 MAC) with a 51-16 edge in shots, a 54-27 advantage in ground balls and a 23-4 margin in faceoffs. Sophomore Brent Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) won 17-of-18 faceoffs for the Blue Jays and collected a career-high 13 ground balls, while junior Nick Andrews (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) finished with five caused turnovers. Back to top 4/14/2009 Men's lacrosse sees win streak snapped by Lycoming ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Lycoming 11, Elizabethtown 8 DeNenno scored three goals during a 6-0 run over the final eight minutes of the first half that turned a 4-4 tie into a 10-4 Warrior lead at intermission, and Lycoming (9-4 overall, 7-1 MAC) made the lead stand despite scoring just once in the second half. The Blue Jays (8-3 overall, 4-3 MAC), whose five-game winning streak came to an end, were sparked by junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township), who scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists on the afternoon. Weber scored three times as the Blue Jays pulled within 10-8 with 8:35 to play, but Lycoming's Ethan Payne tallied with 5:17 left to thwart the comeback. Payne finished with three goals and two assists for the Warriors, while Nate Walter had two goals and an assist. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) scored a pair of goals for the Blue Jays, with sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and sophomore Ben Landis (Talmage, PA/Conestoga Valley) added one goal apiece for Elizabethtown. McCafferty scored 22 seconds into the second quarter to knot the score at 4-4, but the Warriors had two three-goal outbursts to take a 10-4 lead to halftime. DeNenno scored three goals during the run, while Walter added two and assisted on a goal by Shea Conway. Weber scored the lone goal of the third quarter to pull Elizabethtown within 10-5, then McCafferty cut the deficit to 10-6 with 12:43 left in the fourth quarter. Weber tallied twice in a 41-second span to bring the Blue Jays within 10-8 with 8:35 to go, but Elizabethtown managed just one shot the rest of the way. Lycoming finished with a 39-28 advantage in shots over Elizabethtown and held a 36-30 edge in ground balls. Back to top 4/9/2009 Men's lacrosse surges past Eastern, 17-8 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 17, Eastern 8 Sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) chipped in with three goals for the Blue Jays (8-2 overall, 4-2 MAC), who scored seven straight goals to erase a 6-5 Eagle lead and pick up their fifth straight victory. Also scoring for the Blue Jays were sophomore Shawn Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Hershey), junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), sophomore Mike Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and first-year student Derek Neiheiser (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser). Michael Hofmeister scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Eagles (5-6 overall, 3-4 MAC), while five other players scored once apiece. Eastern was outshot by Elizabethtown by a 49-17 margin, including 21-5 in the second half. Eastern jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 4 minutes, 13 seconds on two goals by Hofmeister and one from Pat Dempsey, but Mike Kenneally's goal on an end-to-end rush kick-started the Blue Jay offense with 7:48 left in the opening quarter. Weber, Greg Kenneally and Corcoran added tallies to bring the first quarter to a close with Elizabethtown ahead 4-3. After the Eagles scored three of the first four goals of the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead with 9:14 left in the half, the Blue Jays scored three straight to regain the lead as Staulters, Weber and McCafferty found the back of the net to give Elizabethtown an 8-6 lead at intermission. In the third quarter, McCafferty and Weber scored twice each while Greg Kenneally added a goal as the Blue Jays took a 13-7 lead into the final period. Michael Ryan scored for Eastern with 11:17 to play to bring the Eagles within 13-8, but McCafferty scored twice and Neiheiser and Greg Kenneally scored once apiece to close the scoring for the day. In addition to his goal, Mike Kenneally led the Blue Jays with five ground balls, while McCafferty, Weber and junior Phil Robinson (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) had four ground balls each. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) tallied a goal and four assists for Elizabethtown, while sophomore Shawn Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Hershey), junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and junior Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) finished with two goals apiece. Rusty Booth and Matt Sweazey scored goals for King's, which trailed 6-1 after the first quarter, 8-1 at halftime and 10-1 after three quarters. Malick made 25 total saves as the Blue Jays posted conference wins over DeSales University (8-5) and Manhattanville College (9-8). He finished with 14 saves and allowed just two second-half goals in the win over DeSales, and came up with 11 saves against Manhattanville including a stop in the final minute to preserve the victory.Malick leads the MAC in goals against average (5.89) and has a .586 save percentage for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall, 2-2 MAC), who host Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Back to top 3/28/2009 Men's lax edges Manhattanville, 9-8 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 9, Manhattanville 8 Sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) finished with two goals and four assists while McCafferty and junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) added three goals apiece for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall, 2-2 MAC), who saw a 4-1 halftime lead slip away as the Valiants (3-5 overall, 2-1 MAC) tied the game at 7-7 with 7:14 left and again at 8-8 with 3:52 to play. Mike Strauss paced Manhattanville with three goals while Joey Hasbrouck had a goal and three assists and Charlie Ogalin scored twice for the Valiants, whose eight goals were a season high. Elizabethtown led 6-5 entering the final quarter, and Weber scored just 1:07 into the period to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 lead. However, Andrew McMillan scored a man-up goal with 9:09 left and assisted on Strauss' tying goal to knot the game at 7-7 with 7:14 to play. Weber scored off an assist by Kenneally with the man advantage with 3:57 remaining to give Elizabethtown an 8-7 lead, but the advantage lasted just five seconds as McMillan won the faceoff and passed downfield to Ogalin, who scored to even the game at 8-8. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) scored four consecutive goals to give the Blue Jays (3-1 overall) an 8-1 lead at halftime, and finished with five goals on the afternoon as Elizabethtown held a dominating 41-9 edge in shots over the Pacers (2-3 overall). Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) added four goals and moved into second place on the school career point list with 120, trailing only the 167 points accumulated by Frankie Puzzangara from 2004 to 2007. Back to top 3/14/2009 Men's lacrosse defeated 7-5 by Widener ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Widener 7, Elizabethtown 5 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A five-goal run from the first to the third quarters helped Widener University to a 7-5 victory over Elizabethtown College in Middle Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field. Justin Upp and Johnny Casey each scored a pair of goals for the Pride (1-4 overall, 1-0 MAC), who turned a 2-1 deficit late in the first quarter into a 6-2 lead in the opening minute of the third quarter. Junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) led the Blue Jays (2-1 overall, 0-1 MAC) with three goals, as Elizabethtown was able to pull within 6-5 midway through the fourth quarter before Casey scored an insurance goal with 2:22 remaining. Staulters scored twice in the first 11 minutes to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead, but Upp netted two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter to give Widener a 3-2 lead. Casey and J.J. Hoeffler scored second-quarter goals to boost the Pride lead to 5-2 at intermission, and Kevin McLemore scored 26 seconds into the third quarter to extend Widener's advantage to 6-2. Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) brought the Blue Jays within 6-3 on a goal with 5:07 left in the third quarter, then senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) tallied just 56 seconds into the fourth period to cut the Pride lead to 6-4. Staulters fired home his third goal of the day with 7:41 left to pull Elizabethtown within 6-5, but the Widener defense held firm to lead to Casey's insurance tally with 2:22 to go. Widener finished with a 25-21 edge in shots and a 40-35 advantage in ground balls. The Pride also killed off 10-of-11 man-down situations while getting a goal from Casey with the disadvantage. Back to top 2/26/2009 Men's lax picked fourth in MAC preseason poll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, February 26, 2009 Elizabethtown Men's Lacrosse Picked Fourth in MAC Poll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team has been picked to finish fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced Thursday. The Blue Jays went 6-8 overall and finished fifth in the MAC last season after going 4-3 in league play, narrowly missing a postseason berth. Seven starters return to the Elizabethtown lineup for head coach Terry Corcoran, who begins his fourth season on the sidelines for the Blue Jays. Junior midfielder Aaron Weber is a preseason All-American as named by Inside Lacrosse magazine, and ranked second on the team with 37 points on 22 goals and 15 assists. Senior attack Ryan McCafferty led the Blue Jays with 31 goals and 40 points last year, while junior Jon Day had 106 faceoff wins, 79 ground balls and five man-up goals among his 24 tallies. Widener University and Messiah College shared the top spot in the poll with 102 points, though Widener had six first-place votes to two by Messiah. Lycoming College came in third with 94 points and one first-place vote, while Elizabethtown garnered the final two first-place votes and 91 points. FDU-Florham (74 points) and Eastern University (60 points) rounded out the top half of the poll. The Blue Jays open their 2009 season on Wednesday, March 4 at Guilford College and play their home opener on Sunday, March 8 against Moravian College. Elizabethtown plays the first of 10 conference games on Saturday, March 14 when Widener visits Wolf Field. |
