Elizabethtown at MAC Championships

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming teams competed at the three-day Middle Atlantic Conference championships at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center. The Blue Jay women finished fifth overall while the men took seventh in a field of 10 schools.

Elizabethtown senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) was honored as the women's David B. Eavenson Award winner as the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the championships after winning gold medals in the 400 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. She is the first Blue Jay to win the Eavenson Award since Jackie Zimmerman took the honor in 1996 and 1997.

On Saturday, Geiger won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:46.63 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.77. Her time in the 400 IM broke the school record of 4:47.41 set by Heidi Yoder in 1998-99. She added a third gold medal on Sunday in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 2:25.95, winning the race by nearly four seconds.

In other Sunday competition, first-year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 19:03.14, In the 200 backstroke, senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) was seventh in 2:20.03 and sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) placed eighth in 2:20.45, while in the 100 freestyle junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) finished fifth (56.15 seconds) followed by sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) in sixth at 56.94 seconds.

The Blue Jays concluded the meet by finishing fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Brizek, junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), Hellman and Riley touched the wall fifth in a time of 3:49.42.

On Saturday, Riley took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.11, while Brizek added a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 5:11.30. In relays, the 200 medley relay team of Riley, Gretchen Geiger, Kelly and Brizek finished fourth in a time of 1:56.25, and the 800 freestyle relay team of junior Sara Crimmel (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock), Kelly, Robinson and Hellman also took fourth in 8:33.22.

In Friday action, Riley was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.57 seconds and Brizek finished sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.62. The 200 freestyle relay team of Brizek, Kara Geiger, Hellman and Riley took third with a time of 1:43.08, while the 400 medley relay of Riley, Gretchen Geiger, Kelly and Brizek was fifth in 4:18.93.

The Blue Jay men received a sixth-place finish on Saturday from junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.24 seconds.

In relays, the team of junior Dan Provence (Brookhaven, PA/Penncrest), junior Kevin Smedman (Fort Montgomery, NY/James I. O'Neill), sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) and Drob was sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.31, eighth in the 400 medley relay in 4:01.66, eighth in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.45 and seventh in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.23.

Misericordia won the women's team title with 676 points, ahead of Albright College (603), Lycoming College (511), Widener University (395 points) and Elizabethtown (394). Widener captured the men's crown with 807 points, with Albright (637.5), Misericordia (493), Lycoming (393) and Messiah College (258) rounding out the top five.

Swim teams to compete at MAC Championships

Elizabethtown Set to Swim at MAC Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming teams will be competing in the Middle Atlantic Conference championships at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre beginning Friday and running through Sunday.

The Blue Jay women finished fourth at last year's championships are are aiming for a top-three finish this season, while the Etown men placed fifth last season but have just four swimmers entered in events at this year's meet.

Top medal candidates for the women include junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), who set a school record and won gold in the 50 freestyle last year (25.41 seconds) while taking silver in the 100 freestyle (56.14 seconds). In 2007, Riley was the bronze-medal winner in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.69 seconds.

Senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) is a three-time silver medalist in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, and previously won medals in the 200 medley relay (silver) and 400 medley relay (bronze) in 2007.

Etown's 800 freestyle relay of sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford), junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus) and senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) took the bronze medal last year with a time of 8:30.41.

For the men, junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) is the lone returning medalist, having claimed bronze in the 400 medley relay last year and silver medals in the 400 medley and 200 medley relays in 2007.

Competition begins at noon on Friday with preliminaries in the men's and women's 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Action continues through the weekend with the final event scheduled for Sunday evening.

The Blue Jays (8-6 overall) received wins from first-year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) in the 1000 freestyle (11:26.38) and senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.55) against the Royals.

Swimmers split conference meet at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College faced Widener University in Middle Atlantic Conference swimming action on Saturday afternoon, with the host Pride winning 79-62 in men's competition and the Blue Jay women coming away with a 110-95 triumph.

The Blue Jay women (8-5 overall, 6-2 MAC) received a pair of wins from senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser), in the 200 individual medley (2:22.57) and the 100 freestyle (57.61 seconds). Sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) won the 200 freestyle (2:08.15), junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) took the 50 freestyle (26.11 seconds) and senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.04).

In the 400 freestyle relay, sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), Brizek and Riley won with a time of 3:53.81.

In men's action, junior Dan Provence (Brookhaven, PA/Penncrest) won the 100 freestyle (52.29 seconds) and the 200 breaststroke (2:47.21), while junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) won the 200 butterfly (2:25.47) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) claimed the 200 backstroke (2:01.70).

The 400 freestyle relay quartet of sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro), junior Kevin Smedman (Ft. Montgomery, NY/James I. O'Neill), Miller and Drob also took away a victory with a time of 3:39.31.

Etown swimmers split with Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College traveled to Arcadia University for a Middle Atlantic Conference swim meet on Tuesday night, and came home with a 138-54 win in women's action while the host Knights posted an 83-78 men's victory.

The Blue Jay women (7-5 overall) won the first nine events against the Knights before swimming exhibition in the final two races. Sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) posted wins in the 200 freestyle (2:07.87) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.56), while senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) was victorious in both the 50 freestyle (26.31 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:45.53).

Other wins came from first-year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) in the 1000 freestyle (11:36.83), senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) in the 200 individual medley (2:27.31), sophomore Becca Rose (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) in the 100 butterfly (1:07.98) and junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) in the 100 freestyle (58.26 seconds).

The Blue Jays also claimed a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Kelly, Geiger, Rose and Riley touched the wall in a time of 2:02.88.

In the men's competition, the four-man Blue Jay team won eight of the 11 events but was not able to overcome the depth of the Knights.

Two wins apiece came from junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) in the 50 freestyle (23.20 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (59.35 seconds), sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.30) and 500 freestyle (5:48.14) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) in the 200 individual medley (2:11.25) and 100 backstroke (56.92 seconds).

Junior Kevin Smedman (Ft. Montgomery, NY/James I. O'Neill) also earned a win as he captured the 1000 freestyle in a time of 12:29.30. The Blue Jay foursome also won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.30.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. --- Host Washington College won nine of 11 events in both men's and women's action to defeat Elizabethtown College in non-conference swimming action on Saturday afternoon. The Shoreman posted a 120.5-38.5 win in men's competition and a 120-71 victory in women's action.

Junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) was the lone individual winner for the Blue Jay men, capturing the 50 freestyle in 23.83 seconds. He also swam the anchor of the 200 freestyle relay that won in a time of 1:35.88, joined by junior Kevin Smedman (Ft. Montgomery, NY/James I. O'Neill), sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest).

The Blue Jay women saw senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) post a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.22, while sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford), junior Danielle Hopkins (Franklin, MA/Franklin), sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.46.

Swim teams compete at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming teams traveled to McDaniel College for a non-conference meet on Tuesday night, with the women winning 56-39 and the men falling 61-32.

The Blue Jay women (6-4 overall) won the final five events to pick up the victory, and were led by senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) who won the 200 individual medley (2:23.53) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.76).

Other wins came from junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) in the 100 freestyle (56.52), sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) in the 200 backstroke (2:20.52), and first year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) in the 500 freestyle (5:36.70).

The Blue Jays swept both relays, as the team of Riley, Geiger, senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) and sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) took the 400 medley relay (4:20.96) and the quartet of Brizek, junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), Hellman and Riley won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.24.
 
The men (2-8 overall) saw junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) win the 50 freestyle (22.92) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) take the victory in the 500 freestyle (5:08.27).

Miller and Drob were joined by junior Dan Provence (Brookhaven, PA/Penncrest) and sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) in the 400 medley relay which won with a time of 4:02.34.

Swimming drops pair to Albright

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College swimming teams were defeated by Albright College on Saturday afternoon, as the men fell by a score of 92-43 and the women were defeated 111-94.
 
The Blue Jay men (2-7 overall) got a pair wins on the day, as junior Matt Drob (Strasburg PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) touched first in the 50 free (23.55) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon PA/Cedar Crest) was victorious in the 100 back (57.04).
 
Elizabethtown's women (5-4 overall) picked up four victories led by junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), who won the 50 free (26.44) and the 100 back (1:06.10). Senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) finished first in the 100 breast (1:09.84) and first year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) was victorious in the 1000 free (11:36.33).
