Back to top 6/9/2009 Anna Ford named IWLCA Division III Scholar-Athlete FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, June 8, 2009 Anna Ford Named IWLCA Division III Scholar-Athlete Joining Ford as Scholar-Athletes are Kristin Schwab of Princeton University (Division I) and Julie Kraus of Southern New Hampshire University (Division II). Ford helped the Blue Jays finish 16-3 overall and 11-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference, earning first-team all-MAC and All-Region honors while graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors, taking a bachelor's degree in health and occupation. She received Honors in the discipline and was asked to conduct a research study during 2008-09 by the Occupational Therapy Department. Her project, "Injuries and the Quality of Life of Collegiate Athletes: A Pilot Study" was presented at two college-wide scholarship events in April. Ford was inducted into Pi Theta Epsilon, the Occupational Therapy Honor Society, in spring of 2008. She was recognized by the College as a College Scholar in 2007-08 and 2008-09, for completing 60 credits and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Ford was the recipient of the Mary Jean Schmook Graham Occupational Therapy Scholarship and Ressler Mill Foundation Scholarship as well as awards from the Occupational Therapy Dept. for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years in honor of academic excellence, scientific aptitude, dedication to the profession, and financial need. On the field, Ford finished second on the team with 29 goals and third with 63 points in 19 games. She was second on the team with 35 draw controls and ranked fourth with 27 ground balls. For her career, Ford ranks sixth in program history in both goals (83) and points (129). Back to top 6/5/2009 Women's lacrosse ranked 20th in final IWLCA Division III Poll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 5, 2009 Women's Lacrosse Ranked 20th in Final IWLCA Division III Poll The Blue Jays finished 16-3 overall and 11-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference, advancing to the conference championship game for the second consecutive season. Elizabethtown's 16 victories set a program single-season record, as did the team's 13-game winning streak that extended from March 17 to May 2. The Blue Jays also led Division III in scoring margin at plus 10.21 goals per game. Elizabethtown was ranked in seven of the 12 weekly IWLCA polls during the 2009 season, climbing as high as 16th in the week 11 poll which was released April 28. National champion Franklin & Marshall College earned all 20 first-place votes and the top spot in the final poll, followed by runner-up Salisbury University, Hamilton College, Gettysburg College and the College of New Jersey. She will enter her senior season ranked third in career goals (120) and points (173). Caprinolo, a second-team All-Conference selection and MAC Rookie of the Year in 2007, tallied 29 goals in 19 games for the Blue Jays, including a team-high 14 free-position goals. She also contributed 19 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers, and in two seasons with the Blue Jays ranks ninth in career points with 82 and seventh in goals with 73. Cullinan, a repeat second-team selection, finished with 18 goals and eight assists for 26 points, but made her mark on the defensive end as she led the team with 44 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers to go with 26 draw controls. In just two years, Cullinan already ranks third in program history with 76 caused turnovers in 32 games (2.38 per game). Reeve, who was also a repeat choice on the second team, started all 19 games and finished with one goal, 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers. She concluded her career with 66 ground balls, 22 draw controls and 31 caused turnovers in 69 games. Simmons, a first-team All-MAC pick in both 2007 and 2008, made 17 starts and accumulated 16 ground balls, five draw controls and nine caused turnovers. She finished with two goals, 54 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers in 56 career contests. Along with Reeve, Simmons helped the Blue Jays hold eight of their 11 conference opponents to less than 10 goals and limit the opposition to 20 shots or less in 12 of their 19 games. Hawkins, also named first-team All-MAC in each of the previous two years, was named to the second team despite leading the conference in both goals against average (7.13) and save percentage (.547). Back to top 5/2/2009 Women's lax upset by Messiah 6-5 in MAC finals ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Messiah 6, Elizabethtown 5 Doolittle's winning tally, her second goal of the game, came just nine seconds after the Blue Jays (16-3 overall) tied the game at 5-5 on a goal from senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross). With the win, the Falcons (14-4 overall) claim the second MAC title in program history and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, while the Blue Jays will await a potential at-large bid when the brackets are released on Sunday night. Doolittle finished with two goals and two assists while Megan Bovenzi had two goal and an assist for the Falcons, who trailed 3-1 after 18 minutes but fought back to tie the game at 3-3 at halftime on goals by Doolittle and Rachel Dirksen. Foley paced the Blue Jays with two goals and an assist, with single goals coming from senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled), sophomore Maria DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and sophomore Sarah Cullinan (West Chester, PA/West Chester East). The Falcons took advantage of frequent whistles against the Blue Jays, as Elizabethtown was called for 38 fouls compared to just 17 by Messiah. Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead just 2:22 into the contest on a goal by Ford, and went ahead 2-0 as Foley scored with 19:23 left in the first half. Jackie Dando cut the Blue Jay lead to 2-1 with 12:45 left in the half, but DeMatteo scored just 21 seconds later to restore Elizabethtown's two-goal advantage. Doolittle and Dirksen scored just 39 seconds apart to knot the game at 3-3 with 6:11 to play in the first half, and the game remained even until Cullinan scored on a free-position shot with 24:54 remaining to give the Blue Jays their final lead of the day at 4-3. Bovenzi tied the game with 15:10 left off an assist by Doolittle, and the pair hooked up again with 3:21 to play as Messiah went on top 5-4. Foley fought through the Messiah defense to score the tying goal with 46 seconds left, but Doolittle scored the game-winner just nine seconds later. Elizabethtown finished with a 26-19 advantage in shots and collected 16 ground balls, led by four from Cullinan who also had four caused turnovers. Bovenzi and Betsy Tyson shared the team lead with three ground balls for Messiah. Back to top 4/30/2009 Women's lacrosse advances to MAC finals with 19-7 win over Eastern ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 19, Eastern 7 The 16th-ranked Blue Jays (16-2 overall) won their 13th consecutive game and will host the championship game on Saturday at noon against Messiah College, which defeated FDU-Florham 10-8 in Thursday's other semifinal game. The winner of Saturday's match will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Against Eastern, senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) scored six goals and added an assist and sophomore Maria DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) tallied four times as the Blue Jays overcame a 4-3 deficit with eight unanswered goals to take an 11-4 lead to halftime. Senior Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) scored three goals and added an assist for the Blue Jays, while senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled), junior Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) and junior Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) all finished with two goals. Grace Griffith led the Eagles (11-7 overall) with three goals with Kristin Brownett scoring twice and Katie Choquette and Jessie Basch each tallying one goal. Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the game's opening minute on a goal by Griffith, but Foley, Sangrey and DeMatteo all scored to give Elizabethtown a 3-1 lead with seven minutes gone. The Eagles responded with three consecutive goals from Choquette, Griffith and Basch to go ahead 4-3 with 17:46 left in the first half, but the Blue Jays scored the final eight goals of the half as Kozak, Caprinolo and Foley each scored twice while DeMatteo and Sangrey added single goals to give Elizabethtown an 11-4 advantage. In the second half, Foley scored three times and Ford twice as the Blue Jays outscored the Eagles 8-3 to finish off the victory. In all, 11 different players scored goals for the Blue Jays, who led 11-1 at halftime and finished with a 37-11 edge in shots over the Cougars (4-13 overall, 3-8 MAC). Back to top 4/22/2009 Women's lax clinches top seed with 13-8 win over Messiah ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 13, Messiah 8 Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) scored four goals and added an assist and senior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) finished with a season-high 17 saves for the 17th-ranked Blue Jays (14-2 overall, 10-0 Commonwealth), who earned their 11th straight win and set a program single-season record with their 14th victory of the season. Six different Elizabethtown players scored goals as part of a 6-1 run that turned a 3-3 tie into a 9-4 Blue Jay lead at halftime. The Falcons (11-4 overall, 9-1 MAC) scored three times in 40 seconds in the second half to trim a 13-5 deficit to 13-8 with 8:20 to play, but were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Rachel Dirksen added a goal and two assists while Rachel Coyle and Megan Boventi each had a goal and an assist. Foley scored twice in the first two minutes to give the Blue Jays an early 2-0 lead, then Tam and Kozak exchanged goals to leave Elizabethtown with a 3-1 lead after four minutes. Boventi and Jackie Dando then scored goals to tie the game at 3-3 with 21:29 left in the first half. From there, the Blue Jays scored four straight goals as Caprinolo, Kozak, Kreis and Cullinan struck to give Elizabethtown a 7-3 lead with 11:23 left in the half. Nikki Lawrence broke the run with a goal for Messiah, but Foley and Byrnes scored 18 seconds apart to send Elizabethtown to halftime with a 9-4 lead. The Blue Jays scored the first three goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the day at 12-4, as Elizabethtown's trio of Katies (Caprinolo, Foley and Scheurich) all scored in the first 10 minutes. Jaime Gerhart and Caprinolo exchanged goals in a 44-second span to give the Blue Jays a 13-5 lead with 16:10 to go. Messiah got back in the contest with nine minutes left, as a goal by Dirksen was followed seven seconds later by one from Tam and another from Coyle 33 seconds after that to bring the Falcons with 13-8 with 8:20 to play. Hawkins then came up with a save on a shot by Dirksen just 30 seconds later, and the Blue Jays were able to regain possession and stem the Falcon momentum. Elizabethtown finished with a slight 29-27 edge in shots and held a 22-15 advantage in ground balls. Kreis led the Blue Jays with four ground balls while Foley had a team-high three draw controls, sharing the game lead with Messiah's Tam and Brianne Brennan. Jen Venter finished with six saves in goal for Messiah, making five of her stops in the second half. The Blue Jays (13-2 overall, 9-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) posted wins over Lycoming College (20-10) and King's College (21-0) to extend their program-record winning streak to 10 consecutive games. Elizabethtown is tied with Williams College (8-4) in the rankings. Salisbury University remains atop the IWLCA Division III poll, followed by Franklin & Marshall College, Colby College, Gettysburg College and The College of New Jersey. Back to top 4/15/2009 Women's lacrosse remains unbeaten in MAC with 20-10 win over Lycoming ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 20, Lycoming 10 WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College remained atop the Middle Atlantic Conference standings with a 20-10 victory at Lycoming College in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) led all players with six goals and an assist while senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) added three goals and three assists and first-year student Katie Scheurich (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) scored three times for the 19th-ranked Blue Jays (12-2 overall, 8-0 MAC), who extended their school-record winning streak to nine games. Senior Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) scored a goal and handed out four assists to become the first player in program history to record 100 career assists, finishing the game at 103. Justine Titko and Sammi Jo Bell led the Warriors (6-7 overall, 4-3 MAC) with two goals and an assist each, with Crystal Cody and Megan McIntyre also scoring twice for Lycoming. Junior Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) and sophomore Sarah Cullinan (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) each recorded two goals and an assist for the Blue Jays, with junior Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) netting a pair of goals and sophomore Meg Cassels (Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) tallying once. The Blue Jays broke an early 1-1 tie as Foley scored twice sandwiched around a goal by Cullinan to give Elizabethtown a 4-1 lead with 19:32 left in the first half. After McIntyre scored to bring Lycoming within 4-2, the Blue Jays scored five straight as Byrnes tallied twice while Ford, Kreis and Scheurich also picked up goals. Elizabethtown led 12-5 at halftime and 13-6 with 27:29 left before scoring the game's next six goals. Cassels opened the run before Foley scored three straight in a span of 4 minutes, 16 seconds. Scheurich and Ford closed out the run to give Elizabethtown a 19-6 lead with 19:08 remaining. Elizabethtown finished with a 42-30 advantage in shots and collected 19 ground balls to 14 by Lycoming. Byrnes led the Blue Jays with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Foley had three draw controls. Back to top 4/9/2009 Women's lax wins eighth straight, 23-3 over Wilkes ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 23, Wilkes 3 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Behind a 16-goal outburst in the opening half, 18th-ranked Elizabethtown College defeated Wilkes University 23-3 in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at Wolf Field. Eleven different players scored goals for the Blue Jays (11-2 overall, 7-0 MAC), who won their eighth consecutive game by matching their season high for goals. Over their last three games, the Blue Jays have outscored their opponents by a 59-9 margin, including 40-0 in the first half. Junior Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) led the Blue Jays with four goals while senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) and junior Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) each finished with three goals and two assists. Junior Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) also scored three times and senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) chipped in with two goals and two assists for Elizabethtown. Hawkins was just shy of perfect in goal for the 19th-ranked Blue Jays last week, allowing just one goal in 88 minutes of action in wins over Arcadia University (18-5) and FDU-Florham (18-1). She made four saves in the first half before departing with a 13-0 lead in the win over Arcadia on Wednesday, and came within 2:23 of the first shutout in program history in the rout of defending MAC champion FDU on Saturday. Foley was named MAC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season while Hawkins was recognized as MAC Defender of the Week after the duo led the Blue Jays to three wins last week, including a 12-7 victory over 20th-ranked Dickinson College on Thursday. Foley piled up 18 goals in the three victories, including 10 goals to tie her own program record in a 20-11 win at Manhattanville College on Saturday. Foley's 10th goal against Manhattanville was the 300th point of her career, giving her 226 goals and 74 assists in 60 career games. Earlier in the week, Foley scored four goals in victories against Alvernia University on Tuesday (22-2) and Dickinson on Thursday. She leads the MAC in both goals (47) and points (63) while ranking third in assists with 16. Foley, who earlier this season became Elizabethtown's career leader in goals scored and points, equaled the mark of 10 goals she scored against Susquehanna University on April 4, 2007. Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) and junior Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) each finished with four goals for the Blue Jays (7-2 overall), who had been ranked 20th in each of the two previous weeks before losing their position to the Red Devils (6-3 overall) in this week's IWLCA Division III poll.Senior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made six of her 13 saves in the second half, and kept Dickinson off the scoreboard for the final 33 minutes, 33 seconds of the contest. Back to top 3/19/2009 Foley sets goal record as women's lax edges Stevenson ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 16, Stevenson 15 OWINGS MILLS, Md. --- Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) became Elizabethtown College's career goal leader as she scored four times in the Blue Jays' 16-15 victory at Stevenson University in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday. Foley, who also assisted on four goals, broke the program career record of 202 goals set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005 on her third goal of the game with 17:02 remaining in the second half. Foley, who now has 204 goals and 272 points in her career, had eclipsed Fretz's career point record of 261 on Tuesday evening at Gettysburg College. The contest was a see-saw affair that saw the 20th-ranked Blue Jays (4-2 overall) net the winning goal with 1:58 to play off the stick of sophomore Maria DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), capping a comeback from a 15-13 deficit with seven minutes remaining. DeMatteo scored two goals on the afternoon, along with senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) and juniors Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson), Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) and Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford). Kristyna Hnizda, Megan Weiss and Lisa Baker shared the team lead in goals for the Mustangs (3-3 overall) with three goals apiece as Stevenson rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first half and a 13-11 disadvantage in the second half. Elizabethtown took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the contest on two goals by Ford and one by Foley, but Stevenson took advantage of a pair of three-minute yellow-card advantages, scoring five goals as part of a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 10:06 left in the first half. Two goals by Byrnes and one from Foley helped the Blue Jays pull within 8-6 at halftime, and the teams exchanged goals for the first 10 minutes of the second half to leave the Mustangs ahead 11-9 with 20:12 to go. Elizabethtown would respond with four straight goals off the sticks of Kreis, Foley, Caprinolo and DeMatteo to move ahead 13-11 with 14:23 to play, but Hnizda scored twice in 79 seconds to knot the game at 13-13 with 12:06 left. Foley's eight-point effort increased her career point total to 261, equaling the school record set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005. Foley also moved within four of Fretz's career mark of 202 goals, boosting her total to 198 with her seven-goal afternoon. Byrnes scored twice in a two-minute span of the first half to become the fourth player in school history to net 100 goals, joining Fretz, Foley and Jen Manns (109 goals from 2002 to 2005). Score by period 1 2 Tot Back to top 2/25/2009 Women's lax picked second in MAC preseason poll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, February 25, 2009 Elizabethtown Women's Lacrosse Picked Second in MAC Poll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College has been picked to finish second in the Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced Wednesday. The Blue Jays finished 11-5 overall and in second place in the MAC with a 7-1 record in 2008, losing 15-14 to top-seeded FDU-Florham in the championship game. Elizabethtown returns 11 of their 12 starters, including seven All-MAC performers, to this year's lineup. Senior attack Katie Foley is the Blue Jays' top returning scorer, having been named first-team All-MAC and second-team All-Region after she netted a school-record 70 goals to go with 19 assists for 89 points in 2008. She ranks second in program history with 179 goals and 237 points in her career. Junior midfielder Stephanie Kreis was also a first-team All-MAC and second-team All-Region choice after she finished with 38 goals and a team-high 36 ground balls last season. In goal, senior Jenn Hawkins joined Foley and Kreis as a first-team All-Conference and second-team All-Region selection as she posted a .551 save percentage and a 9.15 goals against average last year. FDU-Florham received eight of the 12 first-place votes in the poll for a total of 130 points, with Elizabethtown taking the other four first-place votes and amassing 125 points. Messiah College (107 points), Lycoming College (101 points) and MAC newcomer Eastern University (100 points) round out the top five. The Blue Jays, who opened their 2009 season with an 18-3 win over York College on Saturday afternoon, will begin their 11-game MAC schedule by hosting Eastern on Saturday, March 14.
