Erdman, Sharp to Compete at NCAA Wrestling Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College will have two entries in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday morning at the U.S. Cellular Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and conclude Saturday evening.

Junior Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville) is among 15 entrants at 285 pounds, while first-year student Tyler Erdman (Herndon, PA/Line Mountain) is in a field of 16 wrestlers at 125 pounds. Both Sharp and Erdman qualified for the NCAA championships by winning their weight classes at the Metropolitan Conference championships at York College on Feb. 22.

They are the first Elizabethtown wrestlers to compete at the Division III championships since Kyle Hart in 2005, and will seek to become the first Blue Jays to earn All-America honors since Justin Barbush at 134 pounds in 1996. Eric Mast was the lone Elizabethtown wrestler to win a national championship, taking the 118-pound title in 1974 and 1977.

Sharp brings an 11-3 record into the championships, including a 9-0 mark at 285 pounds. He went 6-3 in dual meets, and has a career record of 48-29. He will face sixth-seeded Brock Glotfelty of McDaniel College (34-1) in his opening bout.

Erdman has enjoyed a stellar rookie season for the Blue Jays, going 29-4 overall (10-1 in dual meets) with three pins, nine technical falls and three major decisions. Of his four losses, two came to fellow NCAA qualifiers, one came to a nationally-ranked Division II opponent, and the other came when he wrestled up at 133 pounds.

Erdman is seeded eighth in the field and will battle Dan Bloom of Wesleyan University (36-5) in the opening round, with a potential second-round matchup against top-seeded and unbeaten Jake Oster of Elmhurst College (23-0).

Action begins on Friday at 12 noon (EST) with first and second round matches as well as first and second-round consolations, and continues at 7:00 p.m. (EST) with championship quarterfinals and third and fourth-round wrestlebacks.

On Saturday, the championship semifinals will begin at 11:00 a.m. (EST) along with consolation quarterfinals and semifinals and third, fifth and seventh-place matches. Championship finals will begin at 8:00 p.m. (EST) with 10 matches. The top eight finishers in each weight class will earn All-America honors.

Wartburg College is the defending champion, having won three weight classes and claiming nine All-Americans en route to 147 points, ahead of Wisconsin-La Crosse (100 points), Augsburg College (87 points) and Coe College (78 points). Augsburg and Wartburg have nine qualifiers for this year's championships.
