Back to top 1/31/2009 Women's indoor track in action at Haverford, Penn State ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Elizabethtown at Haverford Seamus McElligott Invitational HAVERFORD, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's track and field team competed at the Seamus McElligott Invitational on the campus of Haverford College on Saturday. Senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) turned in a standout performance in field events, winning the high jump (4 feet, 11 inches) and the triple jump (33 feet, 10 3/4 inches) while taking second in the long jump (15 feet, 11 inches). Sophomore Gabrielle Whitley (Lititz, PA/Warwick) finished second to Miles in the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 7 inches. On the track, senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:36.29, followed by sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) in fourth at 19:15.14. Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) was third in the 800 meters (2:21.58), while junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) took sixth in a time of 2:25.93. Junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) crossed the line sixth in the 400 meters in a time of 1:05.14, while first-year student Jill Patrick (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) was eighth in 1:05.91. First-year student Nicole Lipari (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.25 seconds. On Friday night, VanDenHengel, Miles, first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) and Kulp competed at the Penn State National Invitational, finishing the race in 12:27.46 for the fifth-best time in program history and ahead of the University of Pennsylvania. After VanDenHengel opened with a 3:51 over 1,200 meters, it was Howser who impressed the coaching staff with a time of 2:24 for her 800-meter segment. Miles followed with a 62-second split in the 400 meters, while Kulp closed with a 5:07 over 1,600 meters. "Kathryn had run a 2:34 in her only open 800m of the 2009 indoor season," said director of cross country and track and field Chris Straub. "But Coach Falk and I knew she was capable of a 2:24, and she delivered just that!" Like the men's DMR, the women's DMR will head to the New Balance Collegiate Games at the New York City Armory next Friday in an attempt to better their time and take another crack at the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) was the winner in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:29.21, with senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) taking second in 15:31.31 and sophomore Adam Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) in eighth place at 16:25.62. Senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) was third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.36, junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) took sixth in the 200 meters (23.71 seconds) and junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) came in seventh in the 400 meters (52.98 seconds). In field events, first-year student Clayton Kaier (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) was fourth in the pole vault at 3.35 meters (10 feet, 11 3/4 inches) and Eaton finished eighth in the high jump at 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8 3/4 inches). On Friday night, the distance medley relay team continued a tradition established in 2000 by competing at the prestigious Penn State National Invitational. The quartet of Rulander, Grimm, senior James Munnelly (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) and first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) ran 10:21.45 which was the eighth-fastest time in program history. Rulander opened with a 3:08 over the first 1,200 meters, before handing off to Grimm who was clocked at 51 seconds for his 400-meter segment. Munnelly covered his 800 meters in 2:00 flat, while Reichert finished up with a 4:20 over the last 1,600 meters. "Dylan is certainly the core of our middle-distance group this year having run 1:52 in the open 800 meters last spring," commented Straub. "For the DMR to get back to nationals we need three guys capable of running 1:52 for 800m or 4:10 for the mile and get back down close to 10-flat." The distance medley relay team will next step onto the track on Friday night, Feb. 7 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the historic New York City Armory. Seamus McElligott Invitational Elizabethtown College results Back to top 1/31/2009 Men's basketball falls in overtime to Albright, 69-65 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Albright 69, Elizabethtown 65 (OT) Baszika, who finished with 10 points, helped the Lions recover after the Blue Jays erased a 61-53 deficit by scoring 10 straight points in a span of 3 minutes, 30 seconds to take a 63-61 lead. Phil Hall led all players with 14 points and 11 rebounds while brother Derek Hall added nine points and a game-high 13 boards off the bench for Albright (13-7 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth), which went scoreless for just over five minutes before Baszika's tying hoop. Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) shared the team lead in scoring for the Blue Jays (10-9 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth), who shot 35.5 percent (22-for-65) from the field in the game including 3-for-17 from three-point range. Other than two brief one-point leads in the opening minutes, Elizabethtown trailed the entire contest until Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) hit a layup with 1:41 to go to give the Blue Jays a 63-61 lead. Albright led 54-47 with 7:54 to play, but three-pointers by Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) and Church brought Elizabethtown to within 54-53 with 6:36 to go. However, a three-pointer on the Lions' next possession by Matt Ashcroft sparked a 7-0 run that extended Albright's lead to 61-53 with 5:11 left. Elizabethtown countered with two foul shots from Flanagan, a layup by McConnell and two free throws by Houseal to move within 61-59 with 4:09 to go. A thunderous baseline dunk by Church brought the Thompson Gymnasium crowd to its feet and tied the score at 61-61 with 2:26 to go, setting up McConnell's go-ahead hoop one possession later. But, the Lions were able to knot the game in the closing seconds and a last-ditch three-point attempt by the Blue Jays was off the mark, forcing overtime. Albright led 33-28 at halftime behing eight points from Phil Hall and five each from Zac Shaeffer and Ashcroft. Flanagan and Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) shared the team lead in scoring in the first half for Elizabethtown with seven points each. McConnell and Houseal joined Flanagan and Church in double figures for Elizabethtown with 10 points each, while Houseal led the Blue Jays with nine rebounds. A-800 Back to top 1/31/2009 Albright cools off Etown, 73-57 in women's basketball ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Albright 73, Elizabethtown 57 Bre Dillon added 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists for the Lions (12-7 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth), who won their third straight game by shooting 48.3 percent (28-for-59) from the field as a team. Courtney Kofeldt (Coatesville, PA/Holy Spirit, NJ) and Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) shared the team high in scoring for the Blue Jays (10-9 overall, 3-4 Commonwealth) with 16 points apiece, but Elizabethtown could hit just 25.3 percent (19-for-75) from the field in the contest. Albright methodically built its lead through the first half, taking a 33-23 advantage to halftime as McGinness led the Lions with eight points. First-year student Tyler Erdman (Herndon, PA/Line Mountain) finished as runner-up at 125 pounds after dropping a 3-1 decision to top-seeded Cody Zimmerman of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the championship bout. Erdman, who is ranked seventh in Division III and has a 27-3 record on the season, advanced to the finals with a 7-2 decision over Joe Norton of North Central College in Saturday's semifinal action after posting three wins by fall in action on Friday. Erdman posted technical falls over Matt Rafacz of Knox College in the opening round (17-2 in 3:38) and Jason Ray of Manchester College in the second round (15-0 in 5:00), then pinned seventh-seeded David Copp of Lakeland College in 4:00 in the quarterfinals. Junior Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) advanced to the quarterfinals at 285 pounds. He pinned Trey Foster of Mt. St. Joseph College in 52 seconds in the first round, then defeated Steve Durham of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology via technical fall by a score of 19-4. Katzaman was pinned in 6:15 in the quarterfinals by Jon Schmidt of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to end Friday's action, and lost 4-3 to Tony Carothers of Heidelberg College in the fourth round of consolations on Saturday. UW-Parkside claimed three individual champions and won the team title with 145 points, ahead of UW-La Crosse (133 points) and North Central College (125.5 points). Both Blue Jay relays are the lone Division III entries in their respective races, as 15 Division I teams will compete in the 18-team men's race and 14 Division I squads are entered in the 17-team women's event. Competing for the Elizabethtown men will be senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) in the 1,200-meter leg, junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) in the 400-meter segment, senior James Munnelly (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) in the 800-meter portion, and first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) closing in the 1,600 meters. Back to top 1/29/2009 Quinn's career high not enough as Blue Jays fall to Dickinson, 80-72 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Dickinson 80, Elizabethtown 72 Carole Dempsey led the Red Devils (9-8 overall) with 28 points while Alesha Sisco added 15 points and 13 rebounds for Dickinson, which finished 21-for-22 from the foul line as a team including 15-for-16 in the second half. Quinn went 12-for-23 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, to surpass her previous career high of 27 points set against Wesley College on Nov. 18, 2007. She also became the fifth player in program history to make 100 career three-pointers, reaching the milestone on her first trey of the night just over five minutes into the contest. Using just seven players, Dickinson took care on both ends of the court as they committed just nine turnovers on offense and 12 fouls on defense. Elizabethtown (10-8 overall) finished just 5-for-6 from the foul line as a team, with 16 fewer attempts than Dickinson. Elizabethtown led by seven points on three different occasions in the first half, as Quinn sank a trio of three-pointers in a two-minute span. The Blue Jays shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the field in the first half and 6-for-11 from three-point range, but trailed 38-37 at intermission as the Red Devils matched the Blue Jays from the field at 50 percent (16-for-32) while going 6-for-6 at the stripe. Dempsey led all players with 17 points in the first half on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 5-for-5 at the line, while Quinn had a team-high 13 points for Elizabethtown after going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 overall. Dickinson did not trail in the second half, turning a one-point lead with 16:20 to go into a 10-point advantage at 64-54 with 10:06 to play. Elizabethtown trailed 70-60 with 7:27 to go, but scored nine striaight points to pull within 70-69 with 5:28 to go. However, the Blue Jays would go over 4 1/2 minutes without a field goal, and the Red Devils went 8-for-9 from the stripe to clinch the win despite scoring their last field goal with 4:36 to play. Joining Quinn in double figures for Elizabethtown were Stephanie Ellwood (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) and Kelly Sauerzopf (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley) with 11 points each. The Blue Jays drilled 14 threes as a team to equal the program single-game mark also set against Lycoming last season. Coupled with her 4-for-4 performance from beyond the arc in Saturday's 76-41 win at Arcadia University, Kofeldt has made 12 of her last 13 shots from three-point range. For the season, she has made a team-high 41 three-pointers and is shooting 43.6 percent. The victory was the 650th in the 39-year career of Elizabethtown head coach Yvonne Kauffman, ranking her third in Division III history behind Phil Kahler of St. John Fisher College (757 wins) and Mike Strong of the University of Scranton (700 wins). Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) added 21 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Jays (10-7 overall) while Stephanie Ellwood (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) posted career highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds and Kelly Sauerzopf (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley) added 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Dominique Murray led the Mighty Macs (6-10 overall) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Bridget Welz added 11 points and six assists and Chelsea McTigue posted 12 points and five boards off the bench. Both teams shot well from long range, as the Blue Jays finished 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) from beyond the three-point line while the Mighty Macs hit five in 10 attempts. Immaculata recovered from an early seven-point deficit to take a 25-23 lead on a basket by Murray with 2:28 left in the first half. However, three-pointers by Kofeldt and Ellwood sparked an 8-0 run to close the half, giving the Blue Jays a 31-25 lead at intermission. Elizabethtown shot just 10-for-29 overall from the field in the first half (34.5 percent), but went 6-for-12 from three-point range as Ellwood, Quinn and Kofeldt each sank a pair of threes. Ellwood led all players with nine points and six rebounds in the first half, while Welz paced the Mighty Macs with eight points. The Blue Jays scored 17 of the second half's first 23 points to take their largest lead to that point at 48-31 on a putback by Ellwood with 14:27 left. Elizabethtown's advantage swelled to 22 points at 69-47 following Kofeldt's seventh three-pointer with 6:57 to go, but the Mighty Macs went on a 13-2 run to pull within 71-60 with 3:57 remaining. From there, Elizabethtown put the game away as Sauerzopf connected for two layups, Quinn added a basket and Kofeldt hit her record-setting eighth three pointer to push the Blue Jay lead back to 80-63 with 2:23 remaining. His previous career best of 21 points was set against Marymount University on Nov. 25 and matched against Messiah College on Jan. 10. Damien Palantino sank five three-pointers and led the Knights (7-10 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) with 15 points while Khalief Trawick came off the bench to add 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting, but Arcadia finished at just 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from the field as a team including 8-for-24 from three-point range. An 8-0 run midway through the first half, highlighted by five points from Mark Vogel (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) gave Elizabethtown a 16-10 lead with 12:32 left in the half. The Blue Jays held their largest lead of the opening half at 31-20 with 4:20 remaining, but a 9-0 run helped the Knights draw to within 33-29 at intermission. Fogel and Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) shared the team lead with seven points apiece in the first half for Elizabethtown, which shot 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the field, while Palantino hit three three-pointers and tallied a game-high nine points for Arcadia. Eryn Schultz added 15 points for Lebanon Valley, while Megan Bish and Suzie Noyes scored 11 points each off the Dutchmen bench. Andrea Hoover was the fifth player to reach double figures for Lebanon Valley, scoring 10 points to go with games highs of eight rebounds and seven assists. The Blue Jay women (7-5 overall) won the first nine events against the Knights before swimming exhibition in the final two races. Sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) posted wins in the 200 freestyle (2:07.87) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.56), while senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) was victorious in both the 50 freestyle (26.31 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:45.53). She sealed the Elizabethtown victory with two foul shots with five seconds left as the Blue Jays held the Pride (10-6 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) scoreless for the final 3:01. Four players scored in double figures for Elizabethtown, with Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds and Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) adding a career-high 14 points. Albright took a 46-32 lead to halftime on the strength of 6-for-13 shooting from three-point range. In all, four players finished in double figures for Albright, as Charlotte Ciccone added 16 points, Annie McMahon tallied 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Jalene Walker netted 10 points for the Lions. The Blue Jay women (6-4 overall) won the final five events to pick up the victory, and were led by senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) who won the 200 individual medley (2:23.53) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.76). Other wins came from junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) in the 100 freestyle (56.52), sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) in the 200 backstroke (2:20.52), and first year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) in the 500 freestyle (5:36.70). Erdman, ranked eighth in Division III at 125 pounds, improved to 20-2 on the season by pinning Danny Lethbridge in 2:28, while Daub wrapped up the evening with a pin of Zane Bachert in 1:18. Meaney defeated Tim Stewart 16-5 in his 184-pound bout, with Becker following with a 14-3 win over Tim Hopkins to give the Blue Jays an insurmountable 23-9 lead over the Falcons (7-9 overall). Flanagan, who averaged 21.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 73.7 percent from the field for the week, has scored in double figures in all but one of Elizabethtown's 14 games this season. He leads the Blue Jays and is ranked third in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring average at 15.7 points per game. Flanagan, whose previous high was 21 points against Marymount University on Nov. 25, went 9-for-10 from the field including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and hit 3-for-4 from the foul line for the Blue Jays. A layup by Fogel gave the Blue Jays a 31-29 lead at halftime, part of his game-high 10-point effort in the opening half. The Blue Jays never trailed in the second half, but saw the Falcons cut what was a seven-point deficit down to 46-45 on a fast-break layup by Miller with 9:04 remaining. Greg Sye led Lycoming with 15 points, while Brandon Wilkinson came off the Warrior bench to add all 14 of his points in the second half. Eric Anthony added 12 points in defeat for Lycoming, which forced Elizabethtown into just eight turnovers on the evening. The Blue Jays held a 51-38 lead with 11:53 remaining following a basket from Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield), but the Warriors scored the next 10 points to cut the Elizabethtown advantage to 51-48 with 8:08 to go. Elizabethtown regained an eight-point lead at 60-52 with 2:36 to go, but would not score another field goal until the final seconds as Lycoming crept back within three at 64-61 with 21 seconds to go. Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) connected on a layup with nine seconds remaining to give the Blue Jays a 66-61 lead, and after a missed shot Church hit two free throws with two seconds left to set the final score. The Blue Jays lost to the host Violets 21-13 and defeated the Mules 35-12 to move their record to 2-6 on the season. First-year student Tyler Erdman (Herndon, PA/Line Mountain) moved to 19-2 on the season at 125 pounds with a 13-7 win over Kyle Christensen of NYU and a forfeit victory against Muhlenberg. Sophomore Marty Harnish (Marietta, PA/Donegal) also claimed two wins at 133 pounds, earning a 13-7 major decision over Steven Contino of NYU and a forfeit victory over Muhlenberg. Nick Pallotta, :55 (35-12) Back to top 1/7/2009 Montague's 20-20 effort boosts Blue Jays over Lycoming, 69-59 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown 69, Lycoming 59 WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) set career highs of 20 points and 20 rebounds as Elizabethtown College defeated Lycoming College 69-59 in the Commonwealth Conference women's basketball opener for both teams on Wednesday night at Lamade Gymnasium.Montague became the first Blue Jay to reach 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game since Susie Young finished with 27 points and 23 boards against Juniata College in 1993. Young was also the last Etown player to grab 20 rebounds in a game, against the University of Scranton in the 1994 Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs. Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) also posted a double-double for the Blue Jays (7-4 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) with a game-high 21 points along with 12 rebounds, helping snap the Warriors' seven-game winning streak. Elizabethtown finished with a 58-39 advantage in rebounding over Lycoming and held the Warriors (8-2 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) to 21.1 percent (8-for-38) from the field in the second half and 31.9 percent (22-for-69) overall. Andrea Cooper and Allison Mock shared the team high in scoring for Lycoming with 13 points apiece, with Cooper adding nine boards and three assists in 37 minutes of action. Lycoming led for most of the game's first 12 minutes, but the Blue Jays outscored the Warriors 22-11 over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 44-34 lead to halftime. Quinn led all players with 16 points and six rebounds in the first half while Montague added 12 points and six boards for Elizabethtown. Cooper led the Warriors in scoring in the opening 20 minutes by scoring all 13 of her points in the contest. Elizabethtown took its largest led of the evening at 58-41 on a three-pointer by Megan Strohman (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) with 12:04 to play. Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) was the lone player in double figures for the Blue Jays (6-6 overall) as he came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points, including three three-pointers. However, the Blue Jays shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the field and recorded a season low in points. The Monarchs built a 40-28 lead at halftime by shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the field, and led by as many as 19 points in the second half. King's took advantage of a 25-14 foul disparity to go 22-for-26 from the free-throw line compared to 9-for-15 by Elizabethtown. Steve Kline added 19 points and eight rebounds for Wilkes, which finished 7-for-29 from three-point range as a team. Despite making just one field goal in a span of five minutes midway through the second half and none in the final 5:06, the Blue Jays were able to convert a 54-54 tie into an eight-point lead by holding the Colonels without a basket for four minutes during the same stretch. Elizabethtown led 69-61 following two foul shots by Church with 4:05 to go, but Wilkes pulled to within 69-66 on a three-pointer by Chris Gulla with 3:04 left and a layup by Tom Kresge with 1:06 remaining. Flanagan, who scored in double figures for the 11th time in as many games this season, sank two foul shots with 10 seconds to play to give the Blue Jays a 71-66 lead.
