Back to top 2/14/2009 Swimmers in action at MAC Championships ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SWIMMING Sunday, February 15, 2009 Elizabethtown at MAC Championships Elizabethtown senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) was honored as the women's David B. Eavenson Award winner as the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the championships after winning gold medals in the 400 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. She is the first Blue Jay to win the Eavenson Award since Jackie Zimmerman took the honor in 1996 and 1997. On Saturday, Geiger won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:46.63 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.77. Her time in the 400 IM broke the school record of 4:47.41 set by Heidi Yoder in 1998-99. She added a third gold medal on Sunday in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 2:25.95, winning the race by nearly four seconds. In other Sunday competition, first-year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 19:03.14, In the 200 backstroke, senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) was seventh in 2:20.03 and sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) placed eighth in 2:20.45, while in the 100 freestyle junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) finished fifth (56.15 seconds) followed by sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) in sixth at 56.94 seconds. The Blue Jays concluded the meet by finishing fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Brizek, junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), Hellman and Riley touched the wall fifth in a time of 3:49.42. On Saturday, Riley took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.11, while Brizek added a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 5:11.30. In relays, the 200 medley relay team of Riley, Gretchen Geiger, Kelly and Brizek finished fourth in a time of 1:56.25, and the 800 freestyle relay team of junior Sara Crimmel (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock), Kelly, Robinson and Hellman also took fourth in 8:33.22. In Friday action, Riley was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.57 seconds and Brizek finished sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.62. The 200 freestyle relay team of Brizek, Kara Geiger, Hellman and Riley took third with a time of 1:43.08, while the 400 medley relay of Riley, Gretchen Geiger, Kelly and Brizek was fifth in 4:18.93. The Blue Jay men received a sixth-place finish on Saturday from junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.24 seconds. In relays, the team of junior Dan Provence (Brookhaven, PA/Penncrest), junior Kevin Smedman (Fort Montgomery, NY/James I. O'Neill), sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) and Drob was sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.31, eighth in the 400 medley relay in 4:01.66, eighth in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.45 and seventh in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.23. Misericordia won the women's team title with 676 points, ahead of Albright College (603), Lycoming College (511), Widener University (395 points) and Elizabethtown (394). Widener captured the men's crown with 807 points, with Albright (637.5), Misericordia (493), Lycoming (393) and Messiah College (258) rounding out the top five. Elizabethtown (Provence, Smedman, Hagerty, Drob), 3:29.23 Back to top 2/13/2009 Swim teams to compete at MAC Championships FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, February 13, 2009 Elizabethtown Set to Swim at MAC Championships ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming teams will be competing in the Middle Atlantic Conference championships at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre beginning Friday and running through Sunday. The Blue Jay women finished fourth at last year's championships are are aiming for a top-three finish this season, while the Etown men placed fifth last season but have just four swimmers entered in events at this year's meet. Top medal candidates for the women include junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), who set a school record and won gold in the 50 freestyle last year (25.41 seconds) while taking silver in the 100 freestyle (56.14 seconds). In 2007, Riley was the bronze-medal winner in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.69 seconds. Senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) is a three-time silver medalist in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, and previously won medals in the 200 medley relay (silver) and 400 medley relay (bronze) in 2007. Etown's 800 freestyle relay of sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford), junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus) and senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) took the bronze medal last year with a time of 8:30.41. For the men, junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) is the lone returning medalist, having claimed bronze in the 400 medley relay last year and silver medals in the 400 medley and 200 medley relays in 2007. Competition begins at noon on Friday with preliminaries in the men's and women's 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Action continues through the weekend with the final event scheduled for Sunday evening. |
