Back to top 3/31/2009 Baseball drops non-conference game to Susquehanna, 6-3 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Susquehanna 6, Elizabethtown 3 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Pinch-hitter Erik Tuomisto hit a three-run home run to cap a five-run fifth inning as Susquehanna University defeated Elizabethtown College 6-3 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Boyd Stadium. The Crusaders (13-8 overall) have won four consecutive games and eight of their last nine, while the Blue Jays (13-8 overall) saw a five-game winning streak come to an end. Tyler Reichard and John Lunardi each went 2-for-5 for Susquehanna, which finished with 10 hits in the contest, while junior Brian Kiernan (Garden City, NY/Garden City) finished 3-for-4 with a run scored for Elizabethtown. Trailing 3-1 entering the fifth, the Crusaders scored all five of their runs with two outs. Reichard drove home the first run with a triple and scored on an infield single by Chris Price to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later, Tuomisto connected on a three-run home run to left field to give the Crusaders a 6-3 lead. The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as junior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove). Susquehanna answered in the top of the second on an RBI single by Don Kirkland. and the Blue Jays went back ahead 3-1 in the fourth on RBI singles by junior Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) and sophomore Andrew Gordon (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco). Elizabethtown mounted a rally in the eighth inning, putting two runners on base with one out, but Susquehanna reliever Jordan Thomas got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. Matt Lottes (3-0) worked six innings for Susquehanna to get the win, allowing five hits and three earned runs while issuing four walks. Three relievers each followed with a scoreless inning, with Ben Leonard pitching the ninth to earn the save. Senior Matt Kutz (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) gave up nine hits and six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings to drop to 1-3 for Elizabethtown. First-year student Todd Leister (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) struck out three in 2 1/3 innings of relief and senior Kurt Smith (York, PA/Eastern York) tossed a scoreless ninth for the Blue Jays. Back to top 3/30/2009 Malick named MAC men's lacrosse Defender of the Week FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, March 30, 2009 Hunter Malick Named MAC Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Malick (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) has been named the Middle Atlantic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the week ending March 29, the conference office announced Monday. Malick made 25 total saves as the Blue Jays posted conference wins over DeSales University (8-5) and Manhattanville College (9-8). He finished with 14 saves and allowed just two second-half goals in the win over DeSales, and came up with 11 saves against Manhattanville including a stop in the final minute to preserve the victory.Malick leads the MAC in goals against average (5.89) and has a .586 save percentage for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall, 2-2 MAC), who host Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Back to top 3/30/2009 Foley, Hawkins sweep MAC women's lacrosse honors FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, March 30, 2009 Katie Foley, Jenn Hawkins Earn MAC Women's Lacrosse Honors ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior attack Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) and senior goalkeeper Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) have earned Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse honors for the week ending March 29, the conference office announced Monday. Foley was named MAC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season while Hawkins was recognized as MAC Defender of the Week after the duo led the Blue Jays to three wins last week, including a 12-7 victory over 20th-ranked Dickinson College on Thursday. Foley piled up 18 goals in the three victories, including 10 goals to tie her own program record in a 20-11 win at Manhattanville College on Saturday. Foley's 10th goal against Manhattanville was the 300th point of her career, giving her 226 goals and 74 assists in 60 career games. Earlier in the week, Foley scored four goals in victories against Alvernia University on Tuesday (22-2) and Dickinson on Thursday. She leads the MAC in both goals (47) and points (63) while ranking third in assists with 16. Hawkins was in goal for all three wins for the Blue Jays, turning in her finest performance against Dickinson as she shut out the Red Devils in the second half, making six saves, as the Blue Jays rallied from a 7-5 deficit for a 12-7 win. Hawkins finished the week with a 7.58 goals against average and a .538 save percentage, making two saves against Alvernia and six stops against Manhattanville. The Blue Jays finished with a team score of 328 along with the host Spartans, but were nosed out for third place based on a comparison of the fifth-place players for each team. Messiah College finished first with a score of 318, with Marymount University second at 321. Senior Mike Wagner (Allentown, PA/William Allen) had the low round for the Blue Jays with a five-over-par 77, good enough for fifth place in the individual standings. Senior Maurice Rapp (Bangor, PA/Bangor) finished in a tie for ninth place with a round of 80, and sophomore Geoff Quinque (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) tied for 15th at 82. Corey Wenger of Messiah won the individual title with a 73, followed by Marymount's Thomas Donovan and Kevin Thomsen in a tie for second at 75, Matt Lukehart of Stevenson University at 76 and Wagner with a 77. The Crusaders got on the board in the top of the fifth on an error, and the Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Marsico. First-year student Julie Sebastian (Broomall, PA/Marple-Newtown) started for the Blue Jays and allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings to earn the win, while first-year student Elaine Parr (Washington, DC/Academy of the Holy Cross) earned her first save of the year after giving up three hits and an unearned run in three innings of relief. Senior Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scoored for Elizabethtown, and senior Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) finished 2-for-4 and scored a run. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Amanda Gordon (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) singled with one out, moved to second on a two-out walk and scored easily on Marsico's single to right field to give the Blue Jays the sweep. Elizabethtown opened the scoring in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Corrado, and extended their lead to 4-0 in the third on an RBI single by Parr and an error. The Blue Jays added another run in the fifth as Marsico reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to extend Elizabethtown's lead to 5-0, but Alvernia scored four runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Dina Chiapelli and a three-run home run from Jaclyn Torres to move within 5-4. The Crusaders knotted in the game in the seventh as Janelle Lynch singled with one out, stole second and scored on a double to left-center by Crimi. Alvernia loaded the bases with two outs, but Sebastian got Torres to ground into a force out to end the inning. Guzik, Corrado and Marsico all went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays, while Gordon came off the bench to go 2-for-2 as Elizabethtown finished with 12 hits in the game. Back to top 3/28/2009 Women's track runs strong at W&L/VMI Carnival ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Elizabethtown at W&L/VMI Carnival LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Elizabethtown College women's track & field team opened their 2009 outdoor schedule at the two-day Washington & Lee/Virginia Military Institute Carnival, which concluded Saturday. Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) won the 5,000 meters and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field championships with a time of 17:19.16, less than five seconds shy of the school record of 17:14.79 set at the NCAA championships by Melissa St. Clair in 2005. Kulp opened the 3.1 mile race by covering the first mile in 5:39, and dropped to 5:36 in the second mile and 5:26 in the third mile. Kulp also anchored the 4x800-meter relay that set a school record and finished fourth in 9:51.44, running with junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), junior Bern Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) and first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis). The previous record in the 4x800 was 9:58.54, set by the team of Kim Whalen, Amanda Santore, Julie Torchia and Melissa St. Clair in a home quad meet on April 3, 2004. Joining Kulp with top performance in the 5,000 meters were senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford), who finished fourth in 18:24.83 and turned in the fourth-best time in school history, and sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) whose time of 18:50.88 was seventh in the race and eighth-best in program history. In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Alex Walmer (Hershey, PA/Hershey) finished fifth in 43:16.03 with splits of 21:57 and 21:18, and first-year student Katie Nordyke (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) was sixth in 43:38.02 with 5k splits of 21:57 and 21:40. Senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 10 1/4 inches, sixth in the triple jump at 34 feet, 6 3/4 inches and eighth in the 200 meters at 27.64 seconds, the ninth-best time in school history. Frawley finished eighth in the 400 meters in 1:03.10 to rank eighth in program history, VanDenHengel took seventh in the 800 meters at 2:21.17 (fifth in school history) and Howser was eighth in the 800 at 2:21.33 (sixth fastest in school history). Junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) turned in several top performances for the Blue Jays, finishing sixth in the 400 meters with the fourth-best time in school history (50.20 seconds), taking seventh in the long jump at 20 feet, 10 1/2 inches (sixth-best in program history) and placing ninth in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches to tie for the seventh-best jump in school history. Senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) was second in the 1,500 meters and recorded the fourth-best time in program history at 3:56.95, while sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) took ninth in the 5,000 meters (15:21.81) to move into 10th place on the program list.The 4x800-meter relay team of senior James Munnelly (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), first-year student Casey McGarvey (Bozrah, CT/Norwich Free Academy), Rulander and first-year student Mark Weber (Tinton Falls, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) finished second with a time of 7:54.61, the third-best time in program history. Rulander ran a split of 1:52.9 in the third leg while Weber finished in 1:59.6. The Blue Jays (13-7 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth) used pitching, hitting and baserunning to pick up the wins over the Knights (3-18 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth), as junior Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) pitched a three-hitter in the opener, senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) hit a grand slam in game two, and the Blue Jays stole a combined total of 14 bases in the doubleheader. In game one, Hartzell (3-2) allowed a run on two hits in the first inning, then held Arcadia to just two baserunners the rest of the way on a single in the sixth and an error in the seventh. He struck out four and did not walk a batter in his fourth complete game in as many starts this season. The Blue Jays scored four runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple by Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove), an RBI single by Semanek and a sacrifice fly by first-year student Tim Rosser (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum), and added a run in the second on an RBI single by Heaps to take a 5-1 lead. Elizabethtown tacked on a run in the fifth on an RBI single by junior Brian Kiernan (Garden City, NY/Garden City), and plated two more in the sixth on RBI singles by senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) and Heaps. Heaps finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in for the Blue Jays in game one, while Sheibley went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. In all, the Blue Jays finished with nine hits off Knight starter Stephen Vassalotti (0-6), who walked four and struck out one in six innings on the mound. In game two, the Blue Jays broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kiernan, and pushed across five insurance runs in the last of the sixth on an error and a grand slam by Semanek. The home run was Semanek's second of the season and increased his team highs in batting average to .451 and runs batted in to 25. Elizabethtown scored twice in the first inning on a two-run double by Kiernan, only to see the Knights answer with a pair of runs in the second on an RBI double by Rich Schlamowitz and an error. The Blue Jays went ahead 4-2 in the third on a two-out, two-run double by junior Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts), and the Knights responded in the fifth with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by Tim Wiand and an RBI single from Schlamowitz to tie the game at 4-4. Heaps went 2-for-2 with two walks, stole three bases and scored four runs for the Blue Jays, while Kiernan finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as Elizabethtown finished with nine hits in the game. Schlamowitz led the Knights by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Back to top 3/28/2009 Foley ties goal record, reaches 300 points as women's lax wins again ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 20, Manhattanville 11 PURCHASE, N.Y. --- Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) tied her own program single-game record with 10 goals and became the first Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse player to reach 300 career points as the Blue Jays defeated Manhattanville College 20-11 in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday. Foley, who earlier this season became Elizabethtown's career leader in goals scored and points, equaled the mark of 10 goals she scored against Susquehanna University on April 4, 2007. Her final goal of the day with 5:26 remaining was also the 300th point of her career, giving her 226 goals and 74 assists in just 60 games. Senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) also reached a scoring milestone for the Blue Jays (8-2 overall, 4-0 MAC) as she had a pair of assists to become the eighth player in school history to reach 100 career points.The Blue Jays, who posted their fifth consecutive victory, received three goals from sophomore Maria DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, NYSaratoga Springs) and two goals and an assist apiece by junior Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) and sophomore Sarah Cullinan (West Chester, PA/West Chester East). The Valiants (5-2 overall, 2-2 MAC) were led by three goals each from Abbe Grimes and Cassie Kovac along with two goals apiece by Katie Bertel and Emelda Ogweta. Elizabethtown jumped to a 3-0 lead on early goals by senior Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley), Foley and Byrnes, and turned a 5-3 lead into a 9-3 advantage late in the half on consecutive goals by Foley, Cullinan, DeMatteo and Foley again. Manhattanville scored twice in the final 11 seconds of the half to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 11-7 at intermission. Back-to-back goals by Grimes brought the Valiants within 12-9 with 21:21 remaining in the second half, but the Blue Jays scored eight consecutive goals over the next 17 minutes, including five by Foley, to take a 20-9 lead with 4:25 left. Elizabethtown finished with a 40-26 edge in shots and a 27-20 advantage in ground balls over Manhattanville, while the Valiants had 20 draw controls to 13 by the Blue Jays. In addition to her 10-goal performance, Foley led all players with five ground balls in the game. Jen Ascencio finished with a game-high six draw controls for the Valiants while Bertel added four. Senior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made six saves in goal for the Blue Jays over the first 52 minutes, with junior Becca Watkins (Herndon, VA/Westfield) making one stop. Kirstin Betsill finished with seven saves in goal for the Valiants. The Dutchmen scored three runs in the first inning off Sebastian on a three-run double by Allie Davies, and added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run triple by Meghan Donoghue. Lebanon Valley finished with just four hits off Sebastian (1-9), who struck out two and allowed five runs (two earned) in six innings of work. Malizzia (9-0) gave up three hits and whiffed 13 while issuing a pair of walks for the Dutchmen. In game two, the Dutchmen (16-6 overall, 6-0 Commonwealth) struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning on a bases-clearing double by Chelsea Kehr, and extended their lead to 4-0 in the third on an RBI double by Caitlin Keller. The Blue Jays (3-17 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) got on the board in the top of the fifth as Guzik led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by junior Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) to cut the Dutchmen lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Lebanon Valley scored four more runs on RBI singles by Keller and Davies and a two-run double from Kristen Palmerio to take an 8-1 lead. In the sixth, the Dutchmen wrapped up the game via eight-run rule on a sacrifice fly by Keller. Keller went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in for the Dutchmen in game two, while six different players accounted for the Blue Jays' six hits. Back to top 3/28/2009 Men's lax edges Manhattanville, 9-8 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 9, Manhattanville 8 Sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) finished with two goals and four assists while McCafferty and junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) added three goals apiece for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall, 2-2 MAC), who saw a 4-1 halftime lead slip away as the Valiants (3-5 overall, 2-1 MAC) tied the game at 7-7 with 7:14 left and again at 8-8 with 3:52 to play. Mike Strauss paced Manhattanville with three goals while Joey Hasbrouck had a goal and three assists and Charlie Ogalin scored twice for the Valiants, whose eight goals were a season high. Elizabethtown led 6-5 entering the final quarter, and Weber scored just 1:07 into the period to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 lead. However, Andrew McMillan scored a man-up goal with 9:09 left and assisted on Strauss' tying goal to knot the game at 7-7 with 7:14 to play. Weber scored off an assist by Kenneally with the man advantage with 3:57 remaining to give Elizabethtown an 8-7 lead, but the advantage lasted just five seconds as McMillan won the faceoff and passed downfield to Ogalin, who scored to even the game at 8-8. Manhattanville had a chance to tie the score in the last minute of the game, but sophomore Hunter Malick (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) made his 11th and final save of the day on a shot by McMillan, and the Blue Jays ran out the clock. McCafferty scored the only goal of the first quarter to give Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead, but Manhattanville evened the game at 1-1 just 46 seconds into the second quarter on a goal by Vinny Menzenski. Kenneally scored twice in a 75-second span and Weber added a goal 50 seconds later as the Blue Jays took a 4-1 lead with 4:53 left in the second quarter. Strauss and Hasbrouck scored early in the third quarter to trim the Blue Jay lead to 4-3 with 10:36 left, but McCafferty answered just 56 seconds later to restore Elizabethtown's two-goal advantage. trauss scored with the man up with 4:24 left in the third to bring the Valiants within 5-4, only to see the Blue Jays respond 36 seconds later on a goal from sophomore Brian Schaaf (West Chester, PA/East). Ogalin closed the third-period barrage 35 seconds after Schaaf's goal to send the Valiants to the fourth quarter down 6-5. Elizabethtown finished with the advantage in shots (35-33) and ground balls (35-28) while Manhattanville won 10 of the game's 18 faceoffs. Both teams finished 2-for-6 with the extra man, while the Valiants committed 29 turnovers to 25 by the Blue Jays. Back to top 3/27/2009 Baseball uses 15-hit attack to defeat Arcadia, 12-3 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Elizabethtown 12, Arcadia 3 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- A 15-hit attack powered Elizabethtown College to a 12-3 victory at Arcadia University in the opener of their three-game Commonwealth Conference baseball series on Friday afternoon. Senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and four runs batted in, while senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI for the Blue Jays (11-7 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth), who posted multi-run innings in the second, third, fifth and seventh and took advantage of four errors by the Knights (3-16 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth). Senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) improved to 3-1 on the season after scattering six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in seven innings of work, and added a two-run single as part of a four-run second inning for Elizabethtown. The victory was the 21st of his career, tying him with Brad Hassinger (1987-90) and Carmen Coppol (1974-76) for second place on the Elizabethtown all-time wins list behind the 26 victories by Bob Lindsey from 1995-98. Senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) went 3-for-6 for Elizabethtown, and junior Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) extended his hitting streak to 10 games by going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. Junior Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) scored three runs for the Blue Jays as seven of the nine starters crossed home plate on the afternoon. Arcadia scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by John Curreri, but Elizabethtown answered with four runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by Luff and Francis and a two-run single from Heaps. Elizabethtown added two runs in the third on a two-run double by Luff, and two more in the fifth on a two-run double off the bat of Sheibley to take an 8-1 lead. An infield single by Matt Pempkowski in the bottom of the fifth gave Arcadia its second run of the game, but the Blue Jays came right back in the top of the sixth with a run on a passed ball. Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) and junior Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) each finished with four goals for the Blue Jays (7-2 overall), who had been ranked 20th in each of the two previous weeks before losing their position to the Red Devils (6-3 overall) in this week's IWLCA Division III poll.Senior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made six of her 13 saves in the second half, and kept Dickinson off the scoreboard for the final 33 minutes, 33 seconds of the contest. Lexie Kob scored three goals to lead Dickinson, which mustered just nine shots at goal in the second half after peppering Hawkins with 20 shots in the first half. For the game, Elizabethtown outshot the Red Devils by a 32-29 margin, including 20-9 in the second half. Foley opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest, but Dickinson scored the next five goals over a span of 5 minutes, 36 seconds to take a 5-1 lead on Kob's third and final goal of the day with 19:44 left in the first half. Joshua Van Hart led the Bulldogs (2-5 overall, 2-1 MAC) with a pair of goals while Matthew Brancaccio and Andrew Ervin added single goals for DeSales, which also added an own goal when the Blue Jay defense accidently played the ball into its net. Elizabethtown opened the scoring with 8:56 left in the first half on a goal by junior Kyle Huckle (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), but Van Hart knotted the contest just over a minute later. Senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) scored three runs to become Elizabethtown's career leader in runs scored with 130, breaking the mark of 128 set by Jon Hendl from 1992 to 1995. The Blue Jays (10-7 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) finished with 15 hits on the afternoon against the Falcons (7-12-1 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) and won two of three games in the series. Roberts). In the sixth, the Falcons got two runs back as Etter tripled home a run, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Blue Jay lead to 8-7. The Blue Jays came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, as Heaps tripled with one out and scored when Semanek singled through a drawn-in infield, followed by a two-out RBI double to deep left by Yeager that gave Elizabethtown a 10-7 lead. Elizabethtown was led senior Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley), who went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, and senior Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Michele Perch, Elizabeth Cushing and Kira Kern each had two hits for Swarthmore, while Sendelsky hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Garnet a 4-2 lead. First-year student Julie Sebastian (Broomall, PA/Marple-Newtown) cracked her second home run of the season in the top of the second inning to give Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead, and allowed 10 hits while striking out three in her eighth complete game of the season. Alexandra Zelaski picked up the win in game one for Swarthmore, striking out five and allowing three earned runs while going the full seven innings. In game two, Kathryn Riley threw a five-hitter and struck out 13 while Sendelsky went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run in the third inning for the Garnet (6-5 overall). Melissa Emmerson added a pair of hits and scored twice for Swarthmore, which finished with eight hits in the contest. Back to top 3/19/2009 Foley sets goal record as women's lax edges Stevenson ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown 16, Stevenson 15 OWINGS MILLS, Md. --- Senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) became Elizabethtown College's career goal leader as she scored four times in the Blue Jays' 16-15 victory at Stevenson University in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday. Foley, who also assisted on four goals, broke the program career record of 202 goals set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005 on her third goal of the game with 17:02 remaining in the second half. Foley, who now has 204 goals and 272 points in her career, had eclipsed Fretz's career point record of 261 on Tuesday evening at Gettysburg College. The contest was a see-saw affair that saw the 20th-ranked Blue Jays (4-2 overall) net the winning goal with 1:58 to play off the stick of sophomore Maria DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), capping a comeback from a 15-13 deficit with seven minutes remaining. DeMatteo scored two goals on the afternoon, along with senior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) and juniors Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson), Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) and Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford). Kristyna Hnizda, Megan Weiss and Lisa Baker shared the team lead in goals for the Mustangs (3-3 overall) with three goals apiece as Stevenson rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first half and a 13-11 disadvantage in the second half. Elizabethtown took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the contest on two goals by Ford and one by Foley, but Stevenson took advantage of a pair of three-minute yellow-card advantages, scoring five goals as part of a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 10:06 left in the first half. Two goals by Byrnes and one from Foley helped the Blue Jays pull within 8-6 at halftime, and the teams exchanged goals for the first 10 minutes of the second half to leave the Mustangs ahead 11-9 with 20:12 to go. Elizabethtown would respond with four straight goals off the sticks of Kreis, Foley, Caprinolo and DeMatteo to move ahead 13-11 with 14:23 to play, but Hnizda scored twice in 79 seconds to knot the game at 13-13 with 12:06 left. Weiss and Hnizda teamed up to score twice in a 52-second span to give Stevenson a 15-13 lead with 8:32 remaining, but Kreis scored on a free-position shot with 6:54 left to trim the Mustang lead to one. Foley then tied the game with her fourth goal of the day with 6:02 left, setting up DeMatteo's game-winner. Elizabethtown finished with a 38-33 advantage in shots over Stevenson, while the Mustangs held a 19-16 edge in ground balls and a 20-13 lead in draw controls. Roberts) and sophomore Andrew Gordon (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) each had three hits and two runs batted in as Elizabethtown College defeated Dickinson College 7-5 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays (8-6 overall) scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth to turn a 2-1 lead into a 7-2 advantage, only to see the Red Devils (3-8 overall) score three times in the bottom of the eighth to pull within 7-5. However, sophomore Anthony Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) worked out of trouble in the eighth and retired Dickinson in order in the ninth to preserve the win. Francis finished with a pair of double among his three hits and scored a run, while Gordon strole three bases and scored twice for the Blue Jays. In his last three starts, Gordon is 10-for-14 with seven runs scored while Francis has hit safely in six straight games. Ben Sciambi, Bart Marchant and Andrew Sterling all had two hits apiece for Dickinson, which managed eight hits in the contest off three Elizabethtown pitchers. The Blue Jays finished with 12 hits as a team, including two doubles by junior Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts). Elizabethtown opened the scoring in the second inning as Yeager doubled and scored on an RBI single by senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove). The Blue Jays moved ahead 2-0 in the third when Gordon singled, moved to second on an error, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Yeager. Senior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) scored four consecutive goals to give the Blue Jays (3-1 overall) an 8-1 lead at halftime, and finished with five goals on the afternoon as Elizabethtown held a dominating 41-9 edge in shots over the Pacers (2-3 overall). Junior Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) added four goals and moved into second place on the school career point list with 120, trailing only the 167 points accumulated by Frankie Puzzangara from 2004 to 2007. With the score tied 1-1 after the first quarter, Weber scored three goals in a span of 3 minutes, 23 seconds to give Elizabethtown a 4-1 lead with 11:02 left in the second quarter. McCafferty then scored the game's next four goals, capped off with a tally with one second left in the half that gave the Blue Jays an 8-1 advantage. Hamilton College remains first in the rankings, followed by Salisbury University, Franklin & Marshall College, Middlebury College and The College of New Jersey. Blue Jay senior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) scored two goals, including the 200th of her career, and became Elizabethtown's career leader in points with 264, breaking the mark of 261 set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005. Stahl scored twice in a span of 20 seconds midway through the first half as part of a five-goal run that gave the Bullets a 7-1 lead with 3:40 left in the half. Ryan Poff went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in for the Spartans (12-2 overall), who won their 12th straight game by scoring eight runs in the first four innings against the Blue Jays (7-6 overall). Foley's eight-point effort increased her career point total to 261, equaling the school record set by Liz Fretz from 2002 to 2005. Foley also moved within four of Fretz's career mark of 202 goals, boosting her total to 198 with her seven-goal afternoon. Byrnes scored twice in a two-minute span of the first half to become the fourth player in school history to net 100 goals, joining Fretz, Foley and Jen Manns (109 goals from 2002 to 2005). Justin Upp and Johnny Casey each scored a pair of goals for the Pride (1-4 overall, 1-0 MAC), who turned a 2-1 deficit late in the first quarter into a 6-2 lead in the opening minute of the third quarter. Junior Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) led the Blue Jays (2-1 overall, 0-1 MAC) with three goals, as Elizabethtown was able to pull within 6-5 midway through the fourth quarter before Casey scored an insurance goal with 2:22 remaining. Back to top 3/6/2009 Erdman takes All-America honors at NCAA Wrestling Championships ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Elizabethtown at NCAA Division III Championships Erdman defeated Chris Sheetz of Delaware Valley College 7-5 in his seventh-place bout on Saturday to finish the season with a 32-6 record and become the 12th different Blue Jay wrestler to be named All-America, the first since Justin Barbush at 134 pounds in 1996. Erdman, seeded eighth at 125 pounds, defeated Dan Bloom of Wesleyan University 8-4 in his opening bout on Friday. He led undefeated and top-seeded Jake Oster of Elmhurst College by a 7-6 score entering the third and final period of his quarterfinal bout, but Oster scored eight points in the final two minutes to post a 14-7 victory. Erdman dropped to the consolation bracket, where he picked up a 4-2 decision over Max Oldenberg of Wisconsin-Whitewater to conclude action on Friday. On Saturday, Erdman lost by fall to Seth Flodeen of Augsburg College in 5:15 in a consolation quarterfinal bout, setting up his seventh-place matchup with Sheetz. Junior Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville) also competed at 285 pounds for the Blue Jays and pulled off a 6-5 upset of sixth-seeded Brock Glotfelty 6-5 to advance to the quarterfinals, but losses to John Helgerson of Wartburg College (3-2) in the quarterfinals and Adam Sutter of Lakeland College (3-1) in the consolation second round brought his season to an end with a 12-5 record. They are the first Elizabethtown wrestlers to compete at the Division III championships since Kyle Hart in 2005, and will seek to become the first Blue Jays to earn All-America honors since Justin Barbush at 134 pounds in 1996. Eric Mast was the lone Elizabethtown wrestler to win a national championship, taking the 118-pound title in 1974 and 1977. Sharp brings an 11-3 record into the championships, including a 9-0 mark at 285 pounds. He went 6-3 in dual meets, and has a career record of 48-29. The Blue Jays are among 103 men's teams and 156 women's teams recognized by the USTFCCCA for having a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade-point average while competing and scoring at an NCAA Regional Meet. In addition, four members of the men's cross country team and two members of the women's team were recognized as members of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 2008 season, for maintaining cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or better and finishing in the top 25 percent of the field at the NCAA Mideast Regional Meet. A total of 132 men and 221 women were named to the All-Academic Team. Elizabethtown's four men's honorees were tied with Nebraska Wesleyan University and Wisconsin-Platteville for the second-most behind Haverford College, which had six. Church averaged 12.8 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game, and scored in double figures 19 times in 26 games. He ranks eighth in the conference in scoring average and sixth in rebounding average, and averaged 1.5 blocked shots per game to lead the conference for the second straight season.
Charles Jones of conference champion Widener University was named Player of the Year, while the Pride's Chris Carideo was honored as Coach of the Year. She scored in double figures 19 times in 25 games, including nine double-doubles, and finished the season by becoming the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 points in a 90-67 win over Arcadia University on Feb. 21. Quinn finished her Elizabethtown career ranked 22nd on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,013 points, to go with exactly 500 rebounds, 112 three-pointers and 158 steals in 97 games. Bre Dillon of Albright College was named conference Player of the Year, while playoff champion Widener University saw Casey Pritz take Rookie of the Year honors and Alisa DiBonaventura earn the Coach of the Year award. Against Anna Maria, the Blue Jays scored in every inning - including six runs in both the first and fifth innings - and banged out 11 hits to pick up the victory over the Amcats (0-3). First-year student Elaine Parr (Washington, DC/Academy of the Holy Cross) picked up the victory in her collegiate debut, allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out eight. At the plate, she finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in. Junior Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) went 3-for-4 with a double and triple along with two RBIs and two runs scored, and senior Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Against Alma, the Blue Jays (1-1 overall) saw the Scots (6-5 overall) break a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth while adding two more in the seventh. Tanner and senior Holly Martin (Elizabethtown, PA/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, NY) each finished 2-for-3 with a run batted in for Elizabethtown, while Brittany Fales finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Alma. First-year student Julie Sebastian (Broomall, PA/Marple-Newtown) also made her collegiate debut for the Blue Jays and surrendered four earned runs in a complete-game loss, while Alma's Tara Leddy whiffed eight and allowed six hits to gain the win. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- Elizabethtown College senior
Church was a first-team selection while Flanagan was named to the second team, as the Blue Jays finished 14-12 overall (7-5 Commonwealth) and advanced to the conference championship game for the first time since 2004.
Flanagan led the Blue Jays in scoring at 14.3 points per game, and made a team-high 53 three-pointers in 127 attempts (41.7 percent). He scored in double figures 21 times in 26 games, including five games of 20 points or better, and made at least one three-pointer in all but one game. He ranks fifth in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring, seventh in three-pointers per game and sixth in three-point percentage (41.7 percent).
Quinn leads the Commonwealth Conference in scoring average at 15.4 points per game, and ranks second in rebounding at 8.2 boards per contest. She also ranks sixth in free-throw percentage at 72.5 percent (74-for-102), seventh in three-pointers per game (1.52) and is third with 2.40 steals per game.
