ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) and senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Elizabethtown College defeated Messiah College 12-10 in the final game of their three-game Commonwealth Conference baseball series on Monday afternoon at Boyd Stadium.

Senior Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) scored three runs to become Elizabethtown's career leader in runs scored with 130, breaking the mark of 128 set by Jon Hendl from 1992 to 1995.

The Blue Jays (10-7 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) finished with 15 hits on the afternoon against the Falcons (7-12-1 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) and won two of three games in the series.

Senior Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove), junior Ben Yeager (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Semanek knocked in three runs on the day for Elizabethtown on an RBI single in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh that proved to provide the winning margin for the Blue Jays.

Jordan Zimmerman went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and three runs batted in for the Falcons, while Dan Etter finished 3-for-4 with three RBI as the duo accounted for six of Messiah's eight hits in the game.

Junior Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) allowed five unearned runs over the first three innings, but improved to 3-1 on the year as he went six innings and struck out eight for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Anthony Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) threw the last three innings for his first save of the season for Elizabethtown.

Messiah opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Sheldon Witmer, but Elizabethtown came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame off Falcon starter Eric Spring. Sam Heaps tied the game with an infield single, then a bases-loaded walk to Yeager and a two-run single by Motika gave the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead.

Each team scored in the second, with the Falcons pushing across a run on an error and the Blue Jays answering as Sheibley walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gordon to break the career record for runs scored at Elizabethtown.

Messiah took advantage of Elizabethtown's third error in as many innings to score three unearned runs in the top of the third, on an RBI double by Zimmerman and a two-out, two-run single from Etter which tied the game at 5-5.

Elizabethtown regained the lead for good in the bottom of the frame off Messiah reliever Thor Arnesen (1-2) as Yeager walked, moved up on a wild pitch and a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luff.

The Blue Jays expanded their lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of two-out runs, driven home on an infield single by Luff and a double to right field by junior Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts).

In the sixth, the Falcons got two runs back as Etter tripled home a run, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Blue Jay lead to 8-7. The Blue Jays came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, as Heaps tripled with one out and scored when Semanek singled through a drawn-in infield, followed by a two-out RBI double to deep left by Yeager that gave Elizabethtown a 10-7 lead.

Once again, the Falcons responded with two runs in the top of the seventh off Anthony Heaps as Kirk walked with two outs and scored when Zimmerman roped an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Jays loaded the bases on a single and two walks, and Semanek delivered with two outs as he lined a 2-2 pitch back through the box to drive home a pair and give Elizabethtown a 12-9 lead.

The Falcons scored a run in the ninth on a fielder's choice, but Anthony Heaps struck out Zimmerman with a runner on second to finish the game, his fifth strikeout in three innings of relief.

Spring allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks in two innings of work for the Falcons, while Arnesen took the loss after giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

In game two, the Falcons trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth and had just two hits off Blue Jay junior righthander Adam Hartzell (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Messiah starter Travis Thome got the first two outs in the top of the seventh, but a single by senior Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) and a walk to sophomore Andrew Gordon (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) set the stage for Sheibley's go-ahead blast.

Sheibley went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays in game two, while Luff finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Hartzell (2-2) struck out six and allowed three hits in his third complete game of the season, while Thome (1-3) gave up four earned runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

In the opener, senior Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) knocked home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, but the Falcons evened the game in the last of the fourth on a groundout.

In the sixth, back-to-back singles by John Brubaker and Jonny Ebersole with one out brought Witmer to the plate, and he connected for a three-run home run off Blue Jay senior righthander Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) to give Messiah a 4-1 lead.

Witmer (3-1) allowed five hits and struck out two in a complete-game performance for Messiah, while Heaps (2-1) was charged with four earned runs on four hits in six innings of work while striking out eight.
