Brok Walker named Commonwealth Player of the Week in men's tennis

Brok Walker Selected Men's Tennis Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was honored as the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for the week ending March 22, the conference office announced Monday.

Walker went 2-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles last week, losing a total of five games in his two singles wins and teaming with sophomore Bryan Metz to win 24 of 29 doubles games. 

In singles, Walker defeated Tom Allen of DeSales University 6-2, 6-2 while playing flight two on Wednesday, and downed Nick Tarlecki of Immaculata University 6-1, 6-0 from flight one on Thursday.

In doubles, Walker and Metz defeated Dan Bullen and Joe Sulpizio of DeSales 8-1, downed Bobby DeYoung and Demetrios Vlahos of Immaculata 8-0, and knocked off Bill Nason and Justin Feiner of La Salle University 8-4 on Sunday afternoon.

For the season, Walker has a 5-3 record in both singles and doubles, and has a 36-20 career record in singles play.

The Blue Jays (3-1 overall) host Bridgewater College on Saturday at noon.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- Division I La Salle University defeated Elizabethtown College 6-1 in men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon.

First-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) claimed the lone singles victory for the Blue Jays (3-1 overall) with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over George Gennaoui at flight one.

In doubles, the host Explorers won two of the three pro sets to claim the team point. Elizabethtown's team of junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) posted an 8-4 win over Bill Nason and Justin Feiner at flight two.

Men's tennis cruises to 9-0 win over Immaculata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College improved to 3-0 on the season with a 9-0 win over Immaculata University in non-conference men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon.

Playing with a singles lineup that featured just two regulars, the Blue Jays lost a total of just nine games in singles and won 24 of 25 doubles games against the Mighty Macs (0-5 overall).

In singles, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nick Tarlecki at flight one, sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) won 6-2, 6-1 over Bobby DeYoung at flight two, and sophomore Shawn Cotton (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dave Harlan at flight three.

Sophomore Austin Plantz (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at flight four over Demetrios Vlahos, first-year student Matt Freedman (White Plains, NY/White Plains) won 6-0, 6-0 at flight five over Mike Pancoast, and sophomore Paul Brenner (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Andre Brooks at flight six.

In doubles, first-year students Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) and Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) won 8-1 at flight one over Tarlecki and DeYoung, Walker and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) defeated Harlan and Vlahos 8-0 at flight two, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) and junior Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) picked up an 8-0 win at flight three over Pancoast and Brooks.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Host Elizabethtown College did not drop a set in singles play and defeated DeSales University 9-0 in non-conference men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

In singles, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) swept Michael Cejovic 6-0, 6-0 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Tom Allen 6-2, 6-2 at flight two, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) won 6-2, 6-1 at flight three over Dan Bullen.

At flight four, sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) defeated Joe Sulpizio 6-1, 6-1 at flight four, sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Seth Conklin at flight five, and senior Nick Ziobrowski (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at flight six over Timothy Golden.

In doubles, the Blue Jays (2-0 overall) lost just three games against the Bulldogs (2-1 overall). Arrea and first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) defeated Cejovic and Allen 8-0 at flight one, Walker and Metz downed Bullen and Sulpizio 8-1 at flight two, and Kirkhoff along with junior Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) won 8-2 at flight three over Conklin and Golden.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team defeated Alvernia University 8-1 in its 2009 season opener on Saturday afternoon, winning five of six singles matches and capturing all three doubles pro sets.

In singles, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Zach Lockwood 6-3, 6-4 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 6-0, 1-0 (retired) at flight two over Ryan Lineaweaver, and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over David Schaeffer at flight four.

First-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) won 6-3, 6-2 over Adam Lush at flight five, and at flight six sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Zach Marsar.

In doubles, the Blue Jays (1-0 overall) swept the Crusaders (0-3 overall) as Arrea and van den Ende won 8-1 over Lockwood and Lush at flight one, Walker and Metz downed Morgan Davidheiser and Schaeffer 8-2 at flight two, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) teamed with junior Mike Steiner (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) at flight three to defeat Marsar and Aaron Dearstyne 8-3.
