Men's tennis places three on All-Commonwealth team

Elizabethtown Places Three on All-Commonwealth Men's Tennis Team

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) was named Commonwealth Conference Co-Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in men's tennis, the conference office announced Thursday.

Arrea was also named first-team All-Conference, and was joined on the first team by junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and on the second team by senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita).

Arrea is the first Blue Jay to be named Rookie of the Year since Thomas Nyst in 2005, while Walker is a repeat first-team selection. Kirkhoff is a second-team pick after being named to the first team last season.

Arrea has a 16-3 overall record in number-one singles, including a 14-1 mark in dual matches, and has compiled a 13-6 record in doubles playing with three different partners. He shares the Player of the Year award with Jansen Hein of Messiah College.

Walker has a 14-4 overall record at number-two singles for the Blue Jays, with a 12-2 record in dual matches, and is 12-8 at number-two doubles. In Three seasons, Walker has a 45-21 singles record for the Blue Jays.

Kirkhoff has compiled an 11-5 overall record at number-three singles, and is 10-4 in dual matches. Kirkhoff is 11-6 in doubles while playing primarily at flight three.

The Blue Jays (12-4 overall) finished as runner-up to Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference team tournament, and will compete at the Middle Atlantic Conference individual championships in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and Sunday.

Men's tennis downed by Muhlenberg, 6-3

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- Muhlenberg College defeated Elizabethtown College 6-3 in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon, in the final tuneup before this weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference individual championships for the Blue Jays (12-4 overall).

Picking up singles wins for the Blue Jays were first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over John Osborne at flight one, and junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) who defeated Zach Adler 6-4, 0-6 (10-8) at flight two.

With the victory, Arrea moved into fifth place on the Elizabethtown single-season win list with 16 against just three losses. Including among his 16 victories is a sparkling 14-1 mark in dual matches.

Arrea teamed with sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) for a 9-8 (7-1) win over Adler and Jordan Rutt at flight one of doubles, as the duo moved to 6-0 on the season with the victory.

Men's tennis falls to Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth finals

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- Lebanon Valley College won the final two singles matches to capture the Commonwealth Conference men's tennis championship with a 5-4 win over Elizabethtown College at the Hempfield Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutchmen (11-7 overall) earn their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships with the victory over the Blue Jays (11-3 overall), capturing three singles matches and two of three doubles pro sets.

Lebanon Valley led 2-1 after doubles, with first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) accounting for Elizabethtown's point with an 8-2 win over Jon Gingrich and Jared Zeigler at flight one.

The Blue Jays jumped to a 3-2 lead as junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Zeigler 6-3, 6-2 at flight two and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) downed Tom Neckelmann 6-1, 6-1 at flight three.

Walker's win was his 44th career singles victory, breaking the school record of 43 wins set by Mike Bailey from 1986-89.

Lebanon Valley tied the match at 3-3 with a win at flight four, but Arrea put Elizabethtown back on top 4-3 with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at flight one over Matt Grodzinski. However, the Dutchmen won at flights six and five in straight sets to take the championship.

Men's tennis shuts out Arcadia to move to Commonwealth finals

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's tennis team advanced to the Commonwealth Conference finals with a 5-0 victory over Arcadia University in semifinal action on Saturday afternoon at the Hempfield Sports Complex.

The Blue Jays (12-2 overall) will carry an eight-match winning streak into Sunday's championship match at 2:30 p.m. against Lebanon Valley College, which defeated Messiah College 5-2 in Saturday's other semifinal match.

Elizabethtown jumped to a 3-0 lead after doubles, as first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) won 8-3 over Adrell Dalsan and Cory Andrews at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) defeated Kevin Langner and Bart Blankenship 8-6 at flight two, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) won 8-2 at flight three over Zach Millford and Guanying Liu.

In singles, the Blue Jays clinched the match with two victories as Arrea defeated Dalsan 6-0, 6-1 at flight one and van den Ende defeated Millford 6-2, 6-0 at flight five.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- In their final tuneup before this weekend's Commonwealth Conference playoffs, Elizabethtown College won its seventh straight match with a 6-3 victory over Juniata College in non-conference men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon.

The top four singles players all picked up victories for the Blue Jays (11-2 overall), who finished with a perfect 7-0 record on their home court this season.

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at flight one over Jonathan Skoner, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Jarrad Silver 6-1, 7-5 at flight two, senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Ryan Navarro at flight three, and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) downed Amab Chakrabarti 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at flight four.

In doubles play, Arrea and Metz defeated Silver and Chakrabarti 9-7 at flight one, and the team of Kirkhoff and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) was a 9-8 (7-5) winner over Navarro and Casey Chew at flight three.

Jeff Kirkhoff named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

Jeff Kirkhoff Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for the week ending April 19, the conference office has announced.

Kirkhoff won four matches in four days at number-three singles as the Blue Jays clinched the top seed in next weekend's Commonwealth Conference team tournament. His three-set victory at Messiah College on Saturday gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 win and first place in the conference.

In addition to his four singles wins, Kirkhoff teamed with sophomore Brian Osborn for three doubles victories and junior Brok Walker for one doubles win. 

For the season, Kirkhoff has a 9-4 overall record and is 8-3 in dual matches in both singles and doubles for the Blue Jays (10-2 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth), who host Juniata College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Men's tennis wins sixth straight match, 9-0 over Misericordia

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Despite playing its fourth match in as many days, Elizabethtown College picked up an easy 9-0 victory over Misericordia University in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (10-2 overall) dropped just one set in singles against the Cougars (4-6 overall) for their sixth straight victory, the team's longest win streak since winning their final 10 matches of the 2005 season.

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Fred Hockenbury 6-0, 6-2 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 6-0, 6-1 at flight two against Frank Nutt, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win against Nate Powers at flight three.

At flight four, sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) came away with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Brett Ford, first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) needed a third-set super tiebreaker to claim a 6-2, 2-6, (10-7) victory against Matt Hopkins at flight five, and first-year student Matt Freedman (White Plains, NY/White Plains) won 6-1, 6-3 at flight six against Justin Muthler.

In doubles action, Arrea and Metz won 8-2 over Nutt and Ford at flight one, Walker and van den Ende defeated Powers and Hockenbury 8-4 at flight two, and Kirkhoff teamed with sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) for an 8-2 win at flight three over Hopkins and Muthler.

Men's tennis edges Messiah 5-4 to earn top seed

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- In a showdown for the top seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference playoffs, Elizabethtown College pulled out a 5-4 victory over Messiah College in men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (9-2 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) earned their fifth straight victory in a tightly-fought match with the Falcons (8-7 overall, 4-1 Commonwealth) that saw four of the six singles contests go to three sets.

Singles victories for the Blue Jays came from junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) at flight two by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) score over Sam Shorts, senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) at flight three over Luke Ruch by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 and at flight four from sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) who defeated Mike Elliot 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Walker and Metz picked up an 8-0 win over Ruch and Elliot at flight two, and Kirkhoff teamed with sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) for an 8-2 victory over Andrew Wismer and Adam Sheir at flight three.

With the win, Elizabethtown will be the top seed in the Commonwealth Conference team playoffs to be played next Saturday and Sunday at the Hempfield Sports Complex.

STEVENSON, Md. --- Elizabethtown College won its fourth consecutive match with a 6-3 victory at Stevenson University in non-conference men's tennis action on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (8-2 overall) claimed victories in the first four singles flights and won the top two doubles pro sets to pick up the win over the Mustangs (5-7 overall).

In singles, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Ted Cooke 6-1, 6-1 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at flight two over Ryan Morse, senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) won 6-3, 6-0 at flight three against Korey Garner, and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) won at flight four by a 6-2, 6-2 score over Kevin Stamm.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won its third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Lycoming College in Commonwealth Conference men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (7-2 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) won five of six singles matches and took two out of three in doubles against the Warriors (1-5 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth) to pick up the win, setting up a showdown for the top seed in the conference playoffs on Saturday at Messiah College.

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Robert Brown 6-2, 7-5 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 6-1, 6-0 over Alex Beattie at flight two, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) was a 6-1, 4-6, (10-5) winner at flight three against Christian Roesel.

Manrique Arrea named men's tennis Player of the Week

Manrique Arrea Honored as Men's Tennis Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis, the conference office announced Monday.

Arrea went 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the Blue Jays locked up a Commonwealth Conference playoff berth with wins over Lebanon Valley (6-3) and Arcadia (8-1) last week.

Playing at first singles, Arrea earned a pair of straight-set victories, while in doubles he teamed with fellow first-year student Jonathan van den Ende for two wins at flight one.

For the season, Arrea has a 9-2 record in singles, including a 7-0 mark in dual matches, and is 7-4 overall in doubles.

The Blue Jays (6-2 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) are scheduled to host Lycoming College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

GLENSIDE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College secured a berth in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference playoffs with an 8-1 win in men's tennis action at Arcadia University on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (6-2 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) won five of six singles matches and came away with a clean sweep in doubles over the Knights (2-6 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth).

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) won 6-1, 6-0 over Adrell Dalsan at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) defeated Cory Andrews 7-6, 6-2 at flight two, and sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a 6-3, 6-2 victor at flight four over Zach Milliford.

At flight five, first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) won 6-2, 6-2 over Max Amiel, and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) downed Essaq Mohtasebzadah 6-3, 6-0 at flight six.

In doubles, Arrea and van den Ende won 8-2 over Andrews and Dalsan at flight one, Walker and Metz defeated Kevin Langner and Milliford 8-4 at flight two, and at flight three sophomore Austin Plantz (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) teamed with first-year student Matt Freedman (White Plains, NY/White Plains) for an 8-0 win at flight three over Amiel and Adrian Chan.

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- After falling behind 2-1 in doubles, Elizabethtown College won five of six singles matches to defeat Lebanon Valley College 6-3 in Commonwealth Conference men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Matt Grodzinski 6-2, 6-4 at flight one, junior Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at flight two against Jared Zeigler, and senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at flight three over Tom Neckelmann.

At flight five, first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Jon Gingrich, and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) came away with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andrew Levin at flight six.

In doubles, Arrea and van den Ende earned an 8-5 win over Gingrich and Zeigler for the lone point for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) against the Dutchmen (7-7 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth).

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- King's College edged Elizabethtown College 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon, as the Monarchs (8-4 overall) split the six singles matches with the Blue Jays (4-2 overall) but won two of three doubles pro sets.

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) defeated Jonathan Hand 6-1, 6-3 at flight one, senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Povl Schmidt at flight three, and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) defeated Marco Stallone 6-1, 6-3 at flight six for the Blue Jays.

In doubles, Arrea and fellow first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) posted an 8-4 win over Hand and Schmidt at flight one.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Albright College 9-0 in the Commonwealth Conference men's tennis opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon, improving to 4-1 overall on the season.

The Blue Jays lost a total of three games in the five contested singles matches to earn the victory over the Lions (0-4 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth).

In singles action, first-year student Manrique Arrea (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln School) won 6-0, 6-0 over Lee Fura at flight one, senior Jeff Kirkhoff (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at flight two over Kevin Gauby, sophomore Bryan Metz (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at flight three against Jason Lefkoe, first-year student Jonathan van den Ende (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) won 6-0, 6-0 at flight four over Kevin Wong, and sophomore Brian Osborn (Sayre, PA/Sayre) took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mike Callahan at flight five.
