Men's track wins third straight MAC championship

Elizabethtown 1st at Middle Atlantic Conference Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Host Elizabethtown College won its third consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, totaling 170 points to edge runner-up Messiah College by two points.

The championship came down to the last of 21 events over the three-day meet, the 4x400-meter relay. Needing only a second-place finish to clinch the championship, the Blue Jays did just that as they crossed the line in 3:20.53, just behind the Falcons' winning team.

First-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco), senior James Munnelly (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) and senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) ran the relay for the Blue Jays, capping a meet that saw the Blue Jays turn in 16 medal-winning performances including four golds. Head coach Chris Straub was honored by his peers as the MAC Coach of the Year.

Eaton won the 200 meters and barely missed a school record (21.92 seconds) and the long jump (21 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and took second in the 100 meters (11.15 seconds), while Rulander captured the 1,500 meters (3:57.31) and placed second in the 800 meters (1:51.71). Allport finished second in the 400 meters (49.47 seconds) and was third in the 200 meters (22.46 seconds).

Senior Jason Yurchak (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) won the pole vault with a winning height of 13 feet, 5 3/4 inches, the lone Blue Jay to medal in a field event.

In other track events, first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) was second in the steeplechase on Friday (9:55.04) and second in the 1,500 meters (3:57.40) on Saturday, while sophomore Chris Heisey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) added a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters (15:28.97) to go with a second-place finish in Thursday's 10,000 meters (32:30.35). Sophomore Rich Greco (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) finished third in the steeplechase with a time of 9:56.00.

Heisey led five Blue Jas among the top eight finishers in the 5,000 meters, as he was joined by first-year student Colby Miller (Oak Hill, VA/Flint School) in fifth (15:31.32), senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) in sixth (15:40.99), Greco in seventh (15:50.77) and senior Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) in eighth (15:55.44).

Senior Phil Alder (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) took second in the decathlon with a career-best score of 5,405 points and finished seventh in the pole vault (12-6).

Junior Elton Dos Santos (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Charter) finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.87 seconds and was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.05. First-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) took sixth-place finishes in both the 100 meters (11.41 seconds) and 200 meters (22.81 seconds).

In field events, junior Mike Torre (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was fifth in the javelin (181 feet, 4 inches) and junior Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) placed sixth in the hammer throw at 137 feet, 8 inches, breaking his own school record of 132 feet, 11 inches set April 18 at Widener.

On Thursday, Heisey finished second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:30.35, followed by Matula in third at 32:35.95, Miller in fourth at 33:03.30 and Derkacz in sixth with a time of 33:24.37.

Men's track and field battles at Shippensburg

Elizabethtown at Paul Kaiser Classic

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College's men's track and field team completed its final tuneup for next weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference championships by participating in the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday.

Junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.97 seconds, and was eighth in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 10 1/4 inches that places him third on the school's all-time performance list.

Eaton also ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fifth with a time of 43.03 seconds, a team season best. He was joined by first-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus), junior Mike Mauger (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) and junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove).

First-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:52.68, ranking him fifth on the school's all-time performance list.

In the 1,500 meters, first-year student Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) placed 10th with a time of 4:10.10.

First-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) also competed in the 200 meters and finished in 11th place with a time of 23.41 seconds. Classmate Dan Obold (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) moved into fourth place on the school's all-time performance list in the discus with a mark of 111 feet, 4 inches.

Men's track wins 4x400 at Penn Relays

ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Elizabethtown at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's 4x400-meter team finished first in the Pop Haddleton MAC Relay at the Penn Relay Carnival at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field on Friday.

The team of junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York), senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower), first-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) and junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) crossed the line in 3:21.25 to edge out Dickinson College by over one second. The time places the relay team eighth on the program's all-time performance list.

The sprint medley relay team of first-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus), Eaton, Grimm and Rulander also competed and finished with a time of 3:35.23.

Dylan Rulander earns NCAA provisional mark in 800 meters

ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Elizabethtown at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - Elizabethtown College senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 800 meters with his performance at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University on Friday night.

Rulander finished eighth in a field of 55 competitors with a time of 1:51.33, the fourth-best mark of the season to date in Division III and just shy of the automatic qualifying time of 1:51.10.

He now ranks third on the Elizabethtown all-time performance list behind Tyson Evensen (1:50.66 in 2006) and Drew Graybeal (1:50.99 in 2008) and ahead of Patrick Donovan (1:52.44 in 2005) and Greg Wetzel (1:55.83 in 2004).

Senior James Munnelly (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) also competed in the 800 meters and finished with a season-best time of 1:58.92.

Men's track in action at Widener Invitational

Elizabethtown at Widener Invitational

CHESTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College's men's track and field team continued its schedule at the Widener University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Junior Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 40.52 meters (132 feet, 11 inches), finishing second in the event and bettering his own record of 132 feet, 3 inches set at Messiah on April 10, 2008.

First-year student Zach Johnson (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) posted a mark of 12.46 meters (40 feet, 10 1/2 inches) in the shot put to move into second place on the program's all-time performance list, while in the javelin junior Mike Torre (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) finished seventh at 53.70 meters (176 feet, 2 inches) and senior Phil Alder (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) took 10th at 51.06 meters (167 feet, 6 inches).

In the pole vault, senior Jason Yurchak (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) cleared 3.96 meters (12 feet, 11 3/4 inches) to finish in a tie for fifth, and Alder finished seventh at 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches) and moved into a tie for sixth on the school's all-time performance list.

On the track, junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) took 10th in both the 100 meters (11.17 seconds) and the 200 meters (22.33 seconds), moving into sixth on the school's all-time performance list in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 meters.

First-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) climbed into 10th place on the school's all-time performance list in the 200 meters (23.17 seconds) while first-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) moved into seventh on the 400 meters list as he finished sixth in the event with a time of 50.68 seconds.

In the 1500 meters, first-year student Eric Reichert (Hershey, PA/Hershey) came in fourth with a time of 3:58.99, good enough for eighth place on the program's all-time performance list.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Doughty, Eaton, junior Mike Mauger (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) and senior Jason Mastroianni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) finished third in a time of 43.39 seconds, moving the quartet into eighth on the career performance list.

Men's track continues schedule at Bucknell

Elizabethtown at Bucknell Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's track and field team competed at the non-scoring Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University on Friday and Saturday.

Junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) was the top individual finisher for the Blue Jays as he took 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 50.14 seconds.

Eaton also ran leadoff for the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 10th in 3:27.30, competing along with senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower), first-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) and junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove).

The 4x100-meter relay team of first-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus), Allport, junior Mike Mauger (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) and Eaton also finished 10th with a time of 43.67 seconds.

Doughty ran the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 100 meters, clocking 11.48 seconds, while in the 5,000 meters first-year student Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) finished 21st and turned in the eighth-best time in school history of 15:16.86 and sophomore Rich Greco (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) was timed in 15:20.67 for the 10th-best mark in school history.

Senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) recorded the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 31:45.35 to take 26th overall in the invitational section. Senior Scott Derkacz (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) ran in the open 10,000 meters and finished ninth in 32:46.59.

Men's track defeats Juniata, Messiah

ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Juniata College and Messiah College in men's track and field action on Saturday afternoon at Juniata. The Blue Jays scored 141 points on the afternoon, with Juniata tallying 126 points and Messiah 118.

Senior Dylan Rulander (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) won the 800 meters in a time of 1:58.64, and captured the 1500 meters in a time of 4:11.33. First-year student Evan DeArmitt (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) also won a pair of races, taking the 3000 meters with the fifth-best time in program history (9:05.89) and winning the steeplechase in 10:26.17, barely ahead of sophomore Rich Greco (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) who was second in 10:26.30.

Junior Wyatt Eaton (York, PA/Eastern York) won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches and the 200 meters in 22.3 seconds, and was second in both the long jump at 20 feet, 7 1/4 inches and in the 400 meters in 51.51 seconds.

The 4x100-meter relay team of first-year student Pat Doughty (Macungie, PA/Emmaus), first-year student Brian Allport (Quarryville, PA/Solanco), junior Mike Mauger (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) and Eaton finished first in a time of 43.63 seconds, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Eaton, Rulander, Allport and junior Kyle Grimm (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) won with a time of 3:26.82.

In track events, Doughty as second in the 100 meters with the eighth-best time in school history (11.55 seconds). Senior Jeremy Matula (Bath, PA/Northampton) finished second in the 3000 meters and recorded the seventh-best time in school history (9:06.93), and senior Phil Alder (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) took second in the 400 hurdles and clocked the seventh-best time in school history (1:02.04).

In throws, the Blue Jays turned in several top 10 program performances. Junior Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) was second in the shot put and improved his own second-best mark with a throw of 39 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

First-year student Dan Obold (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) finished fourth in the discus at 107 feet, 5 inches (fifth in school history) with classmate Zach Johnson (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) in fifth at 103 feet, 8 inches (sixth-best in school history). Johnson also moved into a tie for sixth on the shot put list with a distance of 35 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
