Women's track finishes 2nd at MAC Championships

Elizabethtown 2nd at Middle Atlantic Conference Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Host Elizabethtown College took second place at the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing with 129 points to rank behind only Messiah College, which rolled up 207 points to win its third straight team title.

Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) added two more medals to her gold won in the steeplechase on Friday (11:43.57) by winning the 5,000 meters (17:54.99) and taking second in the 1,500 meters (4:41.61).

Senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) finished the meet in style as she ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay which won in a time of 4:04.04. It was the first gold medal of Miles' MAC indoor and outdoor careers after winning 24 previous medals, including 16 silver.

She also took second in the triple jump (35 feet, 5 1/4 inches) on Friday and was third in the long jump (16 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and sixth in the 200 meters (27.01 seconds). Miles also tied for fifth in the high jump with sophomore Gabrielle Whitley (Lititz, PA/Warwick) at 4 feet, 10 1/4 inches.

First-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) won the 800 meters in a time of 2:16.61, with junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) coming in sixth with a time of 2:22.19. VanDenHengel also ran in the 5,000 meters and took sixth with a time of 18:24.56, while senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) was fourth in 18:02.35.

Sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) finished third in the heptathlon with 3458 points, breaking the school record of 3450 points set by Sarah Chick in 2004, and was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.86 seconds.

First-year student Nicole Lipari (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) finished eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.96 seconds) and was eighth in the 400 hurdles (1:21.05) behind first-year student Jill Patrick (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) who ran 1:10.99 to take fourth.

Junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) claimed a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters (1:02.25) and ran in the 4x100-meter relay with Miles, first-year student Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) and Gold which took fourth in 50.89 seconds.

Frawley, Patrick and Howser also ran in the 4x400-meter relay with Miles for the Blue Jays, which they won by 2.74 seconds over DeSales University.

First-year student Crystal Connelly (Lower Waterford, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy) took sixth in the shot put at 32 feet, 9 1/2 inches and placed eighth in the discus with a mark of 103 feet, 11 inches.

Daws got the meet off to an exciting start on Thursday by setting a new MAC record in the women's 10,000 meters, crossing the line in 37:01.42 to break the mark of 37:24.90 set in 1990 by Tamara Lave of Haverford College.

Daws jumped from 25th to 20th on the NCAA Division III performance list with her gold-medal effort, as she won by 2 minutes, 39 seconds over runner-up Mary Higgins of Messiah College and nearly four minutes over the rest of the field. Sophomore Teresa Beshore (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) finished seventh with a time of 43:01.43.

Women's track tunes up for MACs at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College's women's track and field team completed its final tuneup for next weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference championships by participating in the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday.

Junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was the Blue Jays' top finisher as she placed second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:39.89, ranking her sixth on the school's all-time performance list.

In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, first-year student Jill Patrick (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) was 12th with a time of 1:12.35 to move into third place on the school's all-time performance list.

In field events, top-10 finishes came from senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) who was seventh in the triple jump at 35 feet, 2 inches, and sophomore Sarah DeGeorge (Butler, PA/Butler) in the discus at 101 feet, 5 inches.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Miles, first-year student Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson), junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) and Patrick took 10th in 52.25 seconds to move into eighth place on the school's all-time performance list.

Daws, Kulp compete at Larry Ellis Invitational

Elizabethtown at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - Elizabethtown College seniors Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) and Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational on the campus of Princeton University on Friday night.

Daws, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifier in the 10,000 meters, became the fourth Blue Jay runner to break 18 minutes in the 5,000 meters as she finished 20th with a time of 17:55.31, joining All-American Melissa St. Clair (17:14.79 in 2005), Kulp (17:19.16 on March 28 at VMI) and Erin Fisher (17:20.60).

Kulp ran in the 1500 meters and finished with a time of 4:47.54 in a field comprised primarily of Division I runners.

Women's track battles at Widener Invitational

CHESTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College's women's track and field team continued its schedule at the Widener University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) finished sixth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:53.54, and was seventh in the 800 meters in 2:21.31. Sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) finished 11th in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:00.35.

Senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) moved into the top 10 on the school's all-time performance list in the 200 meters (27.45, eighth) and 400 meters (1:01.28, fifth). She also competed in the triple jump and finished tied for sixth with a leap of 10.45 meters (34 feet, 3 1/2 inches).

Sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) took ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.00 seconds, and ran anchor in the 4x100 meters with Miles, first-year student Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) and junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) which finished fourth in 51.95 seconds and moved into sixth on the school's all-time performance list.

The 4x400-meter relay team of first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), VanDenHengel, first-year student Jill Patrick (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Gold finished fifth with a time of 4:18.85.

In throws, first-year student Crystal Connelly (Lower Waterford, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy) finished sixth in the hammer throw (94 feet, 1 inch) and eighth in the discus (102 feet, 11 inches) while sophomore Sarah DeGeorge (Butler, PA/Butler) was sixth in the discus at 106 feet, 7 inches.

Women's track turns in strong performances at Bucknell

Elizabethtown at Bucknell Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's track and field team competed at the non-scoring Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University on Friday and Saturday.

Highlighting the meet for the Blue Jays was the performance of senior Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford), who posted a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III championships in the 10,000 meters on Friday night as she finished in 37:24.56 (18:47 and 18:37 splits), placing 10th overall in the field and recording the third-best time in school history.

Sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) also competed in the 10,000 meters and posted the sixth-best time in school history at 39:09.58 (19:33 and 19:36 splits).

In the 1,500 meters, senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) finished eighth overall with a time of 4:39.53, and junior Megan VanDenHengel (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was clocked in 4:53.09 for the sixth-best time in school history.

Sophomore Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) finished 12th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.02 seconds, and senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) took 11th in the high jump by clearing 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch).

Two Blue Jay relay teams had strong outings, as the 4x100 team of Miles, first-year student Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson), junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart) and Gold crossed the line in 52.12 seconds to rank sixth on the school's all-time performance list, and the 4x400 quartet of Miles, first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), Frawley and VanDenHengel took 13th overall in 4:11.32 for the 10th-best time in school history.

Women's track squares off with Messiah and Juniata

Messiah 158.5, Juniata 141, Elizabethtown 114.5

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's track and field team competed in a three-way meet with Messiah College and host Juniata College on Saturday afternoon. Messiah scored 158.5 points to win the meet, followed by Juniata (141 points) and the Blue Jays (114.5 points).

Senior Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) won the steeplechase with a time of 12:08.60, nearly two minutes ahead of the runner-up, while first-year student Crystal Connelly (Lower Waterford, VT/St. Johnsbury Academy) was first in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 10 inches, the fourth-best mark in school history. Connelly also finished second in the discus with a mark of 107 feet, 8 inches to rank third in program history.

The 4x400-meter relay team of junior Bernadette Frawley (Berwyn, PA/Sacred Heart), Kulp, senior Chelsea Miles (Media, PA/Penncrest) and first-year student Kathryn Howser (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) took first place in a time of 4:13.44.

Howser finished second in the 800 meters (2:27.12), sophomore Kristen O'Brien (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) was second in the 3000 meters (11:05.78), and Miles placed second in the triple jump (33 feet, 7 1/2 inches).

Sophomore Sarah DeGeorge (Butler, PA/Butler) was third in both the discus (98 feet, 8 inches) and the hammer throw (85 feet, 2 inches) while Miles took third in the long jump at 15 feet, 8 1/4 inches.
