How to Study Abroad: Choosing a Study Abroad Program
1. Consider the Many Reasons to Study Abroad
There are many personal and academic benefits of studying abroad. As you plan your trip, it’s important to consider these benefits as well as the things you hope to accomplish through your trip abroad. Your program and location selections may include opportunities that can help you better meet your goals.
2. Decide on the Duration of Your Trip
Etown students have many different options when it comes to choosing the length of time spent abroad. Students can choose to study abroad for as short as one week or as long as an entire year. We offer short-term study abroad programs during winter, spring, and summer breaks. If you choose a short-term trip, you may not have as many location options as you would for long-term study abroad experiences.
3. Talk With an Advisor
If you’re having trouble deciding which program is the best fit for you, try talking to your academic advisor or our Etown study abroad advisor. Our faculty and staff frequently work with students who travel abroad and may be able to advise you based on past experiences. They will be able to speak to the academic benefits of studying abroad at a particular time or in a particular location. In addition, you may be able to take advantage of connections our Blue Jays have made in locations around the world to further enhance your trip abroad. In addition to helping you choose a program or location, advisors will help you coordinate scheduling, credit transfers, and financial aid.
4. Choose Where to Study Abroad
When choosing where to study abroad, you’ll need to explore study abroad programs to see which locations are offered. If you will be studying abroad for a semester or longer, you may choose to study abroad through one of our affiliate programs. We offer affiliate programs in locations around the world, including in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Pacific. Our affiliate programs allow for easier credit and financial aid transfers.
5. Explore the Opportunities that Await
After deciding on a location and program, explore what other experiences await. You may be able to take on a unique internship position, plan visits and excursions to nearby locations, or take courses unique to a particular university. Throughout your travels you can polish your linguistic skills, build your resume, and create memories to last a lifetime.
