Elizabethtown College’s Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement is designed specifically for graduates of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Academy who have completed at least one year of full-time law enforcement service. This program recognizes the value of academy training and professional experience, allowing students to transfer 64 credits toward their degree and eliminating the need to retake foundational criminal justice coursework.

To complete the remaining 61 credits required for a 125-credit bachelor’s degree, students will take a combination of core courses, electives, and specialized concentrations. Online Bachelor's in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Requirements

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement at Elizabethtown College requires a total of 125 credit hours. The program waives 64 credits of criminal justice major requirements as a result of the completion of PA State Police Academy training and one year of employment, meaning that students in the program will complete 61 credits at Etown comprised of core, Leadership, Communication, and Human-Centered Approach courses outlined below, along with general electives.

Required Courses

Choose two courses from the Leadership concentration:

It is essential to gain a fundamental understanding of leadership and even more importantly, to gain knowledge in the attributes of leadership in order to make better decisions, both professionally and personally. In this course, we will examine the characteristics, attributes, and styles of leadership. We will discuss the results of a lack of leadership and the impact of following. 

Organizational Behavior is a course that addresses the interaction of the individual, group, and enterprise in the work environment, with special attention to the basic motivational, organizational, and leadership theories and their application. 

Human Resource Management is the analysis of the HR function within organizations. The focus is on the critical component of every business: people. In this course, learners will evaluate how the HR function supports employees while providing critical services for the organization to achieve success. Learners will examine the departments and key partnerships within HR and analyze how the pieces work together to provide employees with the skills and motivation to be efficient and productive.

Choose two courses from the Communication concentration:

This course is designed to study issues of diversity and the media by investigating the audience, content, and institutions of communications. Cultural perceptions will be explored as they relate to an individual’s beliefs on diversity such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, class, and disability. A research and field experience will challenge learners to analyze and formulate their own views.

This course will explore the importance of social media as a strategic marketing and communications tool. By focusing on the role of communication research, students will explore best practices for evaluating social media tools and constructing messages that support organizational marketing communication objectives. Students will develop a social media marketing plan to demonstrate expertise in planning, implementation, and evaluation of social media efforts.

This course explores the study and application of small group communication processes. Learners in this course will discuss theoretical research and apply it to the examination of their own participation in groups. In addition, this course will focus on topics that will encourage students to improve upon their own group behaviors.

Complete both courses from the Human-Centered Approach concentration:

This course will provide learners with a background of concepts, historical perspectives, and information regarding counseling systems. Learners will develop skills for building effective working relationships with clients and focus on skills required to explore clients’ difficulties and recognize and enhance strengths.  It will discuss how to establish plans and implement strategies to accomplish goals related to identified problems or concerns. This course will provide strategies for evaluating case progress in work with individuals, groups and families. It will provide learners with the information they need to meet several Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) competencies—a set of nine standards or competencies centered on an educational format that prescribes attention to outcome performance.

Using a person-centered approach allows one to interact with those you support, supervise, or work with in a respectful and empowering way. This course will explore what is meant by a person-centered approach, the related philosophy, and explore a variety of person-centered approaches. Learners will explore selected tools in detail and practice completing them.

Application Requirements & Process

To enter the Bachelor in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement, you will need to:

  • Have completed Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Academy training.
  • Have a minimum of one year of full-time law enforcement experience with arrest powers.
  • Have graduated from high school or earned a GED.
  • Have writing ability sufficient for success in an accelerated academic program. You will be asked to write an essay that demonstrates your ability.

  •  Complete the undergraduate application via the online portal.
    • Submit proof of completion of Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Academy training and proof of one year of full-time law enforcement experience with arrest powers.
    • Submit official transcripts (college or high school/GED if no college coursework), and a current resume.
    • Submit a double-spaced essay demonstrating your writing abilities. Please share your story and desire to attend Elizabethtown College’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies, how you plan to fit schooling into your life, and any barriers you foresee to starting and completing your education.
  •  After submitting your application, the SGPS Team will review it and make an admissions decision.
  •  If accepted, you will receive an initial offer letter via the applicant portal, which you must accept to proceed with matriculation.
