Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Middle Level Education

Candidates for certification in Elementary/Middle Level Education must select an emphasis in one of four academic content areas and be a generalist in each of the other three academic content areas. The academic emphasis requires completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours in one of the following four content areas: 1) Mathematics, 2) Science, 3) English/Language Arts and Reading, or
4) Social Studies. 

In addition to the one academic emphasis, candidates also are expected to generalize in the remaining three content areas by completing 12 credit hours in each. Students also complete a professional core organized into five areas: 1) Early Adolescent and Adolescent Development, Cognition and Learning; 2) Subject Matter Pedagogy Content (Grades Four through Eight); 3) Assessment; 4) Family and Community Partnerships; and 5) Professionalism. Content requirements are based on national standards for Elementary/Middle Level Education as well as Pennsylvania’s curriculum standards. Candidates will have 190 hours of field experiences prior to student teaching.

Candidates who select the Elementary/Middle Level Education with an emphasis in English/Language Arts and Reading have the option of completing a concentration in Special Education. This concentration leads to certification in special education for Cognitive, Behavior, Physical/Health Disabilities, Pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Candidates who choose this option will receive dual teaching certifications in both Elementary/Middle Level Education and Special Education.

Note: Students who successfully complete the Elizabethtown requirements for the Elementary/Middle Level Education will have their Social Science and Western Cultural Heritage Core Areas of Understanding waived.

Elementary/Middle Level Education – Language Arts/Reading/English emphasis consists of:

Professional Education Courses (42 credits): Education 106, 151, 161 or 162, 241, 258, 470, 490, 496; and Special Education 272, 282.

Reading/English Content Courses (36 credits): Education 251, 346 and 352. In addition, students are required to take six Department- approved English electives. Two of the English electives must be 200 level or above; and another must be an English writing course (English 100 or 150).

Required Social Studies Sequence (12 credits): Education 224 or Education 226 and Education 366. One Department-approved social studies elective also is required.

Required Science Sequence (12 credits): Education 326; and two Department-approved science electives.

Required Mathematics Sequence (12 credits): Mathematics 205 or Mathematics 251; Education 336; and one Department-approved mathematics elective.

Elementary/Middle Level Education – Language Arts/Reading/English and Special Education emphasis consists of:

Professional Education Courses (42 credits): Education 106, 151, 161 or 162, 241, 258, 470, 490, 496; and Special Education 272, 282, 285, 290, 293 and 342.

Reading/English Content Courses (32 credits): Education 251, 346, 352; and Special Education 344. In addition, students are required to take four Department-approved English electives. One English elective must be a 200-level offering, and one of the English electives must be an English writing course (English 100 or 150).

Required Social Studies Sequence (12 credits): Education 366; Education 224 or 226; and one Department-approved social studies electives.

Required Science Sequence (12 credits): Education 326; and two Department-approved science electives.

Required Mathematics Sequence (12 credits): Mathematics 205 or Mathematics 251; Education 336; and one Department-approved mathematics elective.

Elementary/Middle Level Education – Science emphasis consists of:

Professional Education Courses (46 credits): Education 106, 151, 161 or 162, 241, 251, 258, 470, 490, 496; and Special Education 272, 282.

Required Science Content Courses (32 credits): Education 326; Earth Science 113 or Earth Science 114; Biology 111, 112; Chemistry 101, 105 or 109; Physics 103 or 105; and eight credits of 200- or 300-level biology electives.

Required Mathematics Sequence (12 credits): Mathematics 205 or Mathematics 251; Education 336; and one Department-approved mathematics elective.

Required Reading/English Sequence (13 credits): Education 346; one 200-level Department-approved English literature course and one English writing course (English 100 or 150).

Required Social Studies Sequence (12 credits): Education 226, 366; and one Department-approved social studies elective.

Elementary/Middle Level Education – Mathematics emphasis consists of:

Professional Education Courses (46 credits): Education 106, 151, 161 or 162, 241, 251, 258, 470, 490, 496; and Special Education 272, 282.

Required Mathematics Sequence (32 credits): Education 336; one Department-approved introductory mathematics elective; Mathematics 121, 122, and 251; three Department-approved advanced mathematics electives.

Required Social Studies Sequence (12 credits): Education 226, 366; and one Department-approved social studies elective.

Required Science Content Courses (12 credits): Education 326; and two Department-approved science electives.

Required Reading/English Sequence (13 credits): Education 346; one 200-level Department-approved English literature course and one English writing course (English 100 or 150).

Elementary/Middle Level Education – Social Studies emphasis consists of:

Professional Education Courses (46 credits): Education 106, 151, 161 or 162, 241, 251, 258, 470, 490, 496; and Special Education 272, 282.

Required Social Studies Sequence (36 credits): Education 222, 224, 226, 366; Economics 101; History 115, 201, and 202; and one Department- approved social studies elective.

Required Mathematics Sequence (32 credits): Education 336; Mathematics 205 or 251; and one Department-approved mathematics elective.

Required Science Content Courses (12 credits): Education 326; and two Department-approved science electives.

Required Reading/English Sequence (13 credits): Education 346; one 200-level Department-approved English literature course and one English writing course (English 100 or 150).
