Undergraduate Programs

Elizabethtown College, through its Department of Education, offers several programs leading to a bachelor’s degree and Pennsylvania certification. These include a major program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree and Pennsylvania certification in Elementary Education (K-6). The completion of an Early Childhood Education concentration (N-3) with this major results in certifi-cation in both Elementary and Early Childhood Education. The completion of the Special Education concentration with this major adds Special Education certification. A Behavior Management concentration and Urban Education concentration are also available.

The programs in Elementary Education combine strong attention to the liberal arts and sciences with the development of high professional competence. Supported by the Core Program, a required minor or concentration, and elective course work, these major programs creatively bring together the student, the school and the subjects to be taught. Further, the Department stresses the importance of supervised field experiences that complement on-campus courses in education.

Programs in Secondary Education are available in selected academic areas (English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and special interdisciplinary majors in Social Studies and General Science). Carefully designed work in the academic or interdisciplinary major, the Core Program and electives qualify students for the degree appropriate to that major and for Pennsylvania certification for grades 7 through 12 in that subject. A major and Pennsylvania certification are available in Music Education (K-12). In-depth work in the major teamed with completion of the Core Program and elective courses leads to the awarding of the degree and certification. (See Department of Fine and Performing Arts for more information.)

Certification

The Department and College act as an agent of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the teacher certification process for those meeting all appropriate standards.
