The Department of English offers an education which stresses both the knowledge about and effective use of language, and an understanding and appreciation of our literary heritage. Excellence in both writing and literary studies is the fundamental aim of the Core Program and of the rigorous and comprehensive concentrations which prepare students for graduate training in English or professions such as law and medicine, for professional writing careers in a variety of fields, or for teaching at the secondary level of education.
