Students Promoting Awareness and Responsible Choices
Who are they?
The S.P.A.R.C.s are a student group representing Student Health by promoting wellness to their peers in the college community. This student led volunteer group can be seen assisting Student Health in their Health Promotion Programs, or doing a hall program in the residence halls.
Two student assistants who are paid by Student Health lead the S.P.A.R.C.'s. Persons interested in these positions should contact Student Health for applications.
What do they do?
The S.P.A.R.C.s provide education opportunities on current health issues for their peers in the residence halls, and in the campus community. This is done through hall programs, outreach programming for Student Health, or in collaboration with another campus group.
What are their responsibilities?
- Attend training sessions in the fall
- Attend BI-monthly staff meetings and other committee meetings when necessary
- Plan, prepare, implement, and participate in campus wide programs for the school year. It is required to participate in at least 2 hall programs a semester .
- Collaborate with the Health Services staff to discuss ideas, concerns, problems and teaching techniques.
- Develop and implement programs on wellness and health awareness.
- Be a role model through modeling acceptable behavior, and maintain a good awareness of current health issues.
- Be an advocate for Student Health
How do I become a S.P.A.R.C.?
The S.P.A.R.C. training is done in late August before students return for the fall semester. It is a program designed by Bacchus & Gamma Network specifically for college peer educators. Upon completion of training and passing of a test, each student is then recognized as a nationally certified S.P.A.R.C..
Recruitment for new S.P.A.R.C.s goes on all year long, and many join the group during the year & can actively help with programs and events; with the expectation of getting certified the following fall semester.
