"The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find yourself and your country both examples and warnings; fine things to take as models, base things rotten through and through, to avoid."
Livy

"History," Stephen said, "is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake."
James Joyce

For over a century, the history department at Elizabethtown College has been engaging students in a dialogue about history. The central focus of our studies has been the Continent, the British Isles and America but has now expanded to include the East. Students who choose history as a major can now specialize in the history of China and Japan with a newly introduced concentration in Asian Studies. In addition to addressing the political and economic development of nations and states, some courses provide an opportunity to study intellectual history which raises questions on the nature of history and historical writing. Whether you choose to investigate the ancient world, American economic history, the Civil War, World War II, or the history of modern China, you will discover why so many provocative things have been said about the study of history.

History majors will have the opportunity to pursue independent research over a semester in either the junior or senior year. Beyond standard course work, students are encouraged to pursue internships in an archival setting, a historical society or museum and to take advantage of the junior year abroad programs. History majors continue to maintain an active and student-run History Club and a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society. Students are inducted into the Honor Society during an Annual Banquet sponsored by the department.  To learn more about history follow some of the links provided by the faculty.

"You have reckoned that history ought to judge the past and to instruct the contemporary world as to the future. The present attempt does not yield to that high office. It will merely tell how it really was."
Leopold von Ranke
