Welcome to French Studies at Elizabethtown College

Welcome to the Wonderful World of French!

In his poem, “The Road Not Taken”, Robert Frost describes an encounter with a fork in the road. This bifurcation becomes a metaphor for choices that we confront as we navigate the road of life. For college students, the opportunity to study French creates a fork in the road because it requires a commitment to encounter something “different.” Many Elizabethtown College students choose to embark on this exciting, transformative journey. Here’s why…

  •  Courses: language, culture, conversation, reading, translation, literature, civilization and business
  •  Skills Outcomes: speaking and listening for communication with native speakers; writing for self-expression and interaction with others; reading to analyze and appreciate history, literature and politics
  •  Knowledge Outcomes: grammatical structures, historical information, contemporary culture and literary masterpieces
  •  Study Abroad: a year or a semester; France or a Francophone country
  •  More Knowledge: your native language

Where the journey leads…

  • Liberal Arts Education: more sophisticated critical thinking, writing, and oral communication in 2 languages
  • Global Citizenship: claim as Diogenes did, “I am a citizen of the world.”
  • Thrice-Born Intellectual: born once in your country, then in another, and then back in your own again
  • Interesting Careers: Peace Corps Volunteer, High School teacher, Business Administrator in Paris, College Professor, Translator
