Internship & Student Scholarship Opportunities
State House Legislative Fellowship Program
Juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA or better are invited to apply for the Legislative Fellowship Program sponsored by the PA State House of Representatives. This is a competitive application process, which includes interviews in Harrisburg. Those who are chosen receive a full-time, paid internship in the PS state legislature for the spring 2004 semester. Students may also be eligible to receive eight hours of course credit through the Department's Capital Semester Internship Program (PS 471). Last year two E-town students applied for and won internships, and were very impressed with the program. Since 1998, 50 percent of the program's participants have found employment in government after graduation. Deadline for applications is November 14. See Prof. McClellan for further information.
Pennsylvania Political Science Association Annual Meeting
The Pennsylvania Political Science Association will hold its annual meeting on April 2-4, 2004 at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre. The PPSA sponsors panels for student scholarship; last year four E-town students presented or co-presented papers at the conference. If you are interested in presenting an original research paper at the PPSA meeting, members of the Department are willing to work with you as mentors for your project. Deadline for paper proposals is January 15, 2004.
Finnegan Fellowship Foundation Contest
Each year, the James A. Finnegan Fellowship Foundation sponsors an essay contest for any student attending a Pennsylvania college who is interested in a paid summer internship in PA state government. Contest winners receive awards of $1000-1500, combined with an 8-10 week paid summer internship in state government. Winners are recognized each spring at a luncheon in the Governor's Mansion. Last year Matt Miller '05 was one of the winners. If you are interested in applying, check out the contest website at http://members.aol.com/jafinnegan. Members of the Department of Political Science are willing to work with you in developing your essay. Deadline for all application materials is January 31, 2004.
