Student Directed Learning Communities
Established in 1992, the Student Directed Learning Communities are housing opportunities within the College-owned homes along the perimeter of the campus. They offer small groups of upper class students the opportunity to create a unique, self-directed living environment, centered on a common theme, issue, or interest through which the group is expected to share and enrich the campus community.
The SDLCs are awarded in the spring semester through a very selective application procedure coordinated by a committee of students faculty and staff. Residents are responsible for their own cooking, cleaning, and house management details. Optional meal plans are available.
This SDLC programs for the 2009-2010 year include:
BOC (Brightening Our Community) –320 East Orange Street (Rose Garden): The mission of this house is to help less fortunate families in our community and surrounding areas. They focus on helping young mothers and their children by providing support, care, and compassion to the residents of the Milagro House in
Harmony House –530 South Mount Joy Street – (Hackman House): The mission of this house is to use music (in music therapy and education) in various contexts in the community to aid in socialization, relaxation, cognitive development, outlets for appropriate behavior, and leisure for older adults, children, and the campus community. They also work to raise awareness about music therapy and music education in the community.
Helping Hands/Best Buddies
PhAT House (Physical Awareness Team) –
Saturday’s Special – 437 College Avenue: The mission of this program is to engage children from ages three through twelve years of the Elizabethtown and surrounding communities in educational, yet fun, activities and foster social skills and development while providing positive role models. Their motto is “Nurturing the seeds of today, into the flowers of tomorrow.”
Diamond House - Hackman Apartment. The mission of the Diamond House is to advocate for cultural diversity in view of hope for the future. Our hope by incorporating under represented ethnic groups will ultimately broaden and educate the campus community. We will accomplish this by visiting small groups of neighborhood high school students as well as the Lancaster REACH program one Tuesday and Thursday a month. In an effort to bridge the cultural gap between the surrounding cities and Elizabethtown itself, we will encourage the campus to become active members in our endeavors to spread cultural awareness.
TREE House (Treasure & Respect Earth’s Environment) – 318 Plum Street. Our mission is to treasure and respect earth’s environment through hands on experiences and education for ourselves and the community about ecological issues and the importance of respecting earth’s environment.
The BEACH House - 540 Mount Joy - White House. Our mission is to help those that are not fully able to help themselves through Habitat for Humanity and the Meals on Wheels programs.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters – 435 College Ave – Our mission of our program is to get involved with the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) program. We will each be matched with a little sister and will serve as a mentor, friend, and role model to our individual little.
Big Sisters: 320 Plum Street. The mission of our program is to improve the Lancaster Community and in effect improve the Elizabethtown Community through education, support, and encouragement or delinquent youth women.
