Why should I live on campus?
There are numerous advantages to living on campus including:
- The feeling of community within your floor and residence hall.
- You can study whenever you want at any number of locations.
- You learn from others with different experiences and perspectives.
- Various seminars and programs are presented by the Residence Life staff regarding issues such as study skills, time management, personal safety, conflict resolution.
- Special interest communities including Wellness, First Year Wing, and Quiet Study
- You can get involved in the Campus Residence Association (CRA)
- You don't have to drive to campus in the rain and snow!
Are students required to live on campus? Is campus housing guaranteed?
All fulltime undergraduate students are expected to live in College-owned residential facilities for the entirety of their undergraduate enrollment at Elizabethtown College except when they are classified as commuters or are granted permission, in writing, by the Office of Residence Life to live elsewhere. Housing is guaranteed for no more than eight (8) semesters. Part-time and graduate students will not be offered housing.
What furniture is supplied in the residence halls?
Each residence hall student has the following furniture supplied in his or her residence hall room:
Bed
Desk and chair
Closet
Dresser
Are the beds and mattresses standard size or extra long?
All beds and mattresses are standard twin size.
Can I build a loft in my residence hall room?
Lofts are not permitted in any Elizabethtown College residential housing.
Are the residence facilities air conditioned?
The following residential facilities have central air conditioning: Brinser Hall, Founders Hall, Schlosser Hall, the Vera Hackman Apartments and the Schreiber Quadrangle townhouses. Window air conditioning units are installed in Myer Hall, Ober Hall and Royer Hall for the first few weeks of Fall semester. Students living in the Student Directed Learning Communities (SDLCs) may bring their own window air conditioners (not to exceed 7500 BTUs operating on 110 voltage) to be installed by college technicians.
Do the windows open for fresh air?
Windows can be opened in all residential facilities for fresh air to circulate.
Are smoke alarms and fire extinguishers located in the residence halls?
Each residence hall rooms has an addressable fire alarm & smoke detector installed for the protection of students. Fire drills are organized by Residence Life, Campus Security and Facilities Management staff at various times throughout the year. Fire extinguishers are strategically located throughout all residence halls.
Is smoking permitted in the residence halls?
Smoking is prohibited in all residential facilities. Space is provided at designated locations on the exterior of each residence hall for students who wish to smoke.
May I bring a halogen lamp to campus?
Due to safety hazards associated with halogen lamps, the Safety, Security, College Life Management Team (SSCLMT) voted unanimously to prohibit the use of halogen lamps on campus.
Are electrical appliances permitted in the residence hall rooms?
Students may use the following electrical appliances in their rooms: radio, television, tape recorder/CD player, lamp, fan, hair dryer, computer, VCR and small refrigerator with AC demand of no more than 115 volts. As a convenience, the Campus Residence Association (CRA) rents microfridges, which include refrigerators, freezers, and microwaves all in one unit. Heating and cooking appliances with exposed coils (including hot plates and space heaters) may not be used because of potential fire hazards.
How many internet jacks are there per room?
Each residential facility is wired at the "one port per pillow" standard for informational technology needs. This means each student has access to the campus network from his or her computer. Additional computer technology information is available through the Information and Technology Services (ITS) department.
Is there a telephone in my room?
Each residence hall room has one telephone line for two students. Students must supply their own phone. One voice mailbox is supplied for each phone line.
Are cooking facilities available in the residence halls?
Since all residence hall students are required to have a meal plan, limited cooking facilities are available in the following residence halls: Founders, Brinser, and Schlosser.
Are laundry rooms available?
Each residence hall has a laundry room with multiple units for student unit. The cost of laundry is included in the room rate for each student. To do laundry the student only needs to swipe his/her ID card. Etown College subscribes to the Esdus laundry management program which allows students to monitor the availability of the laundry machines online.
Are pets permitted in the residence halls?
The only pets permitted in the residence halls are non-carnivorous fish in aquariums of 10 gallons or less capacity. Fish may be kept in private rooms, with the agreement of all roommates. Guide dogs are also permitted.
Are recycling services available in the residence halls?
All residence halls are equipped with recycling centers. Students are encouraged to participate in college-wide recycling efforts.
