Nicole Schroeder: Resonating with Early Music
Senior Nicole Schroeder (shown standing in the photograph) has been interested in music for as long as she can remember. Therefore, she was particularly honored this year to be selected as co-director of Camerata, Elizabethtown College’s student-led, student-auditioned ensemble. Comprised of 18 singers, Camerata sings a wide range of music from the choral repertoire, concentrating primarily on early music. Katie Bohdel – who is seated – is Camerata’s other co-director.
Through her experience with Camerata, Nicole has learned to give every type of music a chance. For example, before she started performing early music this year, she knew very little about it. Now, she is taking a music history course to develop an understanding of how music was performed during that time period. “At first I wasn’t really interested in early music because, like many other people, I assumed it was all long, slow pieces in languages I couldn't understand," she explains. “But once I took the time to study the music of the period, I realized that everything they composed formed a basis for classical music as we know it.”
