The Hiring Process
Securing a job on-campus often depends on the flexibility of the student. Although no student is "guaranteed" a job, historically there have been an adequate number of job openings to meet our students' needs.
Students are NOT assigned or placed into specific job assignments. Each department is responsible for hiring their own students. While the Payroll/Student Employment and Financial Aid Offices may assist departments and students as much as possible, the final responsibility for filling a position rests with the department and the student.
When job openings occur or a position is filled, the department should contact the Payroll Office. The Payroll Office will then update the Student Jobs section of the Student Employment web site. Students should monitor the web site for openings and then directly contact the department indicated to apply for the job.
Finding a Job
Student employees will seek employment on campus in the same way that they would seek employment in their community. They will be self-advocates in finding a campus job either by work of mouth, by simply approaching any office on campus, or by using the Current Student Job Openings link.
Depending on the department and the supervisor, students may need to fill out an application, have an interview, enter into a training program, submit letters of reference, etc. Each department, in this regard, has its own hiring and employment procedures.
It is recommended that students take along their class schedule to allow for discussion of work times. The interview should be treated with the same respect that an off-campus interview would be given. This process is a good opportunity for students to practice their communication and job interview skills.
There is a difference between no available jobs and wanting the absolute perfect job. If you have specific time demands (such as odd class hours or sports practice/games), you may need to look a bit harder or broaden your search to include positions that will accommodate these demands. Dining Services is one of the higher paying and most flexible jobs on campus and can usually accommodate your schedule.
Each year the College offers a great and rewarding work environment through the Office of Service Learning. Community Service opportunities in and around the Elizabethtown community provide students with many jobs that fit well into a student's hours and schedules and are partially funded through the FWS program. For more information contact the Office of Service Learning located in the CENTER FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP, Nicarry Hall, Room 117 (phone 361-1108).
Payroll Information-How to Get Paid
All student employees must complete the necessary employment forms before they may work on-campus! These forms include:
These forms are available in the Payroll Office, Alpha Hall 201 or via the Required Forms section of our site. See the Required Forms section of this website for more details.
All student employees are paid based upon the hours posted on ClocTrak , the College's automated time and attendance system.
All Students will receive their pay via direct deposit every other Friday. Students will be paid at least minimum wage ($7.15/hr). The pay rate may vary by department, shift, and/or experience level. The complete student payroll schedule is listed on the Student Pay Dates section of this website.
Whether employed through FWS or institutional employment, the intent is for students to use their wages to assist in payment of their "indirect costs" such as books, transportation, and personal care items.
All Elizabethtown College students' earnings are subject to Federal income tax withholding. Pennsylvania state tax (3.07%) will be withheld from all students' earnings regardless of their state of permanent residence. Lancaster County tax will be withheld from students residing in Lancaster County on a permanent basis. FICA tax is withheld only if the student is enrolled for less than six credits during any semester/session.
Rights & Responsibilities
-
A student may not work more than 20 hours per week.
- A two-week notice is required when resigning from a position.
-
While departments try to be flexible with your hours because of your class schedule, you must realize that this is a real job and should be treated with the same importance you would give a position off-campus.
-
Arrive promptly for work as scheduled. You help to arrange your schedule; you are expected to adhere to it. Remember, your supervisor is counting on you. Habitual tardiness or absence is sufficient reason for termination.
-
Ask questions when you do not understand an assignment or how to do something. It will save much time and wasted effort for both you and your supervisor.
-
Student jobs are positions of trust concerning your access to supplies, equipment, and confidential information. Your trustworthiness and responsibility are mandatory. A confidentiality statement, signed by the student, may be required in some jobs;
-
It is both your and your department's responsibility to accurately report your hours worked on ClocTrak and to have your supervisor review and approve your time card. If you work in only one department, that number will automatically enter on ClocTrak. If you work two departments, the number of the department considered the "HOME" will enter on ClocTrak. When working in the "non-HOME" department, you will need to change the number in ClocTrak. Your supervisor(s) or his/her designate(s) should verify your time card.
-
Discuss problems of the job with your supervisor. If the problems cannot be resolved, you may be dismissed or choose to resign. You may obtain another position if one is available and if the circumstances did not involve flagrant violations of these or department work responsibilities. If a student handbook violation is involved, the student may face campus disciplinary action as well as be prohibited from ever working again in any other campus job.
Termination
There are times when you will not be comfortable in your job, due to conflicts with the supervisor, other workers, or with the job itself. If this happens, you should speak with your supervisor and deal with the problem as soon as possible. If after repeated attempts, you and your supervisor cannot reach a comfortable level, termination may be appropriate. A two-week notice is required prior to job dismissal.
Students may be terminated from their position immediately if there are cases of serious infractions, such as theft, harassment, etc. Fraud and/or forgery with regard to the information provided on the ClocTrak time card will result in dismissal from institutional employment and serious disciplinary action.
