Student Teaching and Field Experience

In cooperation with the Elizabethtown College Department of Education, music education majors complete both field experience and student teaching.

The strength of our music education program is enhanced by continuous field experience opportunities throughout the music education program. Students participate in a minimum of 190 hours of field experience prior to student teaching and 1 semester of student teaching. Field experience placements prior to student teaching provide opportunities to teach and assist at every level (preK, elementary general music, secondary vocal music, and secondary instrumental music). Throughout these field experiences, students have opportunities to critique, reflect, and receive mentoring and coaching within associated methods courses.

During the student teaching semester, students teach while being observed by the music education professor on a weekly basis. Students are placed at nearby Columbia, Dauphin, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Lancaster, and other public and private school districts. Due to small music education class sizes, field experience placements are tailored to fit the needs and aims of each student. The quality of these neighboring school districts and the individual attention of an Elizabethtown music education provides rich opportunities for teacher growth.
