Mitchell to lead Family Business Center
Elizabethtown College has hired Michael L. Mitchell ’84 to serve as executive director of the S. Dale High Center for Family Business (HCFB) beginning March 19. Mitchell is an Elizabethtown College alumnus, having earned a bachelor of science degree in Marketing in 1984. He earned a master’s degree in Business from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business in 1989. Mitchell began his career in food marketing and management with the General Mills Company, in Minneapolis, MN. After joining the H.J. Heinz Company, Mitchell moved through the company to become a senior product manager, bringing to market several new product lines including gravies, spaghetti sauces and soups.
Since 1995, Mitchell has served as president/owner of Amelia’s Grocery Outlet where he oversaw all aspects of growing the family business from three to 15 stores with 400 employees. During 2012, Mitchell structured the sale of the business. He brings a wealth of knowledge about family business, community involvement and strategic planning to the HCFB. In 2010, Mitchell was recognized as Small Business Person of the Year by the Lancaster (Pa.) Chamber of Commerce.
“Mike provides a unique combination of expertise to the Center,” said Carl Strikwerda, president of Elizabethtown College. “His direct experience with family-owned businesses and the challenges facing them will bring credible counsel to members of the High Center for Family Business.”
Mitchell serves on various committees with the Lititz Recreation Center; supported the Boy Scouts of America Scouting for Food Program for Lancaster and Lebanon Counties; and is active with the Elizabethtown College Leadership Council and the Community Fellowship Church. He resides in Lititz, Pa.
