A Message From the Department Chair

The Department of Political Science is dedicated to promoting scholarship, leadership and civic involvement. Grounded in the liberal arts, the political science major exposes students to the principal subfields of the discipline, including American government, international relations, political theory, comparative government, research methods and public policy, and develops skills in writing, oral expression, and critical thinking. The Department strongly encourages experiential learning in government, politics and the law through active learning in the classroom, co-curricular programs, its own Capital Semester Internship Program and off-campus study. A major in political science prepares students for careers in law, public administration, campaigns and elections, issue advocacy, teaching, communications, the diplomatic corps and many other exciting fields in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Beyond its worth in career terms, the study of politics and government can lead to more effective pursuit of a person's political interests as a civic responsibility or as an avocation.
