Search Engines, Directories, and Portals for Maps and Earth Images
All The World's Maps -- From EmbassyWorld, very good directory of online maps of countries and their cities.
Country Maps-- From Travelportal, a collection of links to online country maps, capital city maps, and other map collections.
Geography Network-- Excellent portal site to a "global community of data providers who are committed to making geographic content available." Features maps, geodata, and a wide variety of other geographical content, through the Geography Network Explorer search facility.
Infomine Map and GIS Search Engine-- From INFOMINE, University of California, a searchable directory to all types of Internet resources of scholarly use to those interested in maps and Geographic Information Systems.
Map Collection-- From the Dudley Knox Library, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, a directory of annotated links to a wide variety of online maps (including in military history and conflict areas) and geographical digital data.
World Atlas: Maps and Geography of the World-- From About.com's geography section, an excellent guide to finding online maps of oceans, continents, regions, countries, and cities.
World Maps-- "Search for any world map for any part of the world... in various groupings, travel maps showing various destinations within a particular country and many more map themes. Also you have the possibility to view the flags of the world in our section 'World Flags'."
World of Maps-- Excellent online map catalogue--"Links to Web or Telnet catalogues of map holdings, map collections and map archives, map curatorship and map history, map institutions, map events and many others."
Other Sources for Maps and Earth Images
AAAS Atlas of Population and Environment-- From the American Association for the Advancement of Science, "maps and graphics that quantify and illustrate many of the issues, and text that lays out the broader links between population dynamics and the environment and places them within their historical perspective."
Atlapedia Online-- Presents full color physical and political maps, as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.
Atlas of Canada-- Current maps, tables, images, geographical facts, and archive of historical maps, from Natural Resources Canada.
Atlas of Global Inequality-- From the University of California, presentations and downloadable data about the "interaction between global integration (globalization) and inequality [with] maps, graphics and data primarily for use by students and teachers." Indicators with data back to the 1960s concern material inequality, life and death, global connectedness, and economic globalization, with other indicators to be added.
David Rumsey Historical Map Collection-- "Over 11,000 maps online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, children's and manuscript maps." Includes map tools.
Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative-- "International project to develop and distribute digital data on historical and archaeological resources" from the University of California, Berkeley. Allows online creation of digital maps to show global cultural, social, and economic diversity by place and time.
geodata.gov-- From the U.S. government, a searchable "geographic information system (GIS) portal, also known as the Geospatial One-Stop, that serves as a public gateway for improving access to [United States] geospatial information and data under the Geospatial One-Stop e-government initiative... makes it easier, faster, and less expensive for all levels of government and the public to access geospatial information."
Geology.com-- From Dr. Hobart M. King, Associate Professor of Geology at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, an excellent source for "geologists, earth scientists, students, teachers and others who are interested in geology or searching for geological information." Many maps and related information posted, but note especially the World Country Maps and Country Satellite Images.
Google Earth-- Excellent free downloadable program that "puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop... combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips."
Great Globe Gallery-- Quite extensive collection of earthmaps and global representations of a wide range of aspects, views, and characteristics, natural and manmade.
Infoplease Atlas-- Regional and country maps, other geographical information, and world statistics.
John R. Borchert Map Library-- Includes maps and research tools, from the University of Minnesota Libraries.
Maplandia-- "Provides the searchable world gazetteer based on Google Maps, the most comprehensive online satellite imagery ever available. More than 2 million places all over the world are divided into many geographical categories according to continents, countries and administrative regions."
Maplecroft Maps-- "Highly visual web-based resource which contains detailed country information for over 200 states and maps key social, economic, environmental and political issues and their significance to business and society. The interactive map enables users to view an issue individually or in combination with other issues in order to illustrate the relationship between two or more associated topics." Registration required.
Maporama-- Interactive street-level directional maps and itineraries for cities in many countries in Europe and North America, in several formats and many languages.
National Atlas of the United States of America-- From the United States Geological Survey, interactive multimedia maps of the United States. Includes many maps to be viewed, printed, or downloaded from the site.
National Geographic Society maintains a great map site, the Map Machine, including atlas and dynamic maps, satellite images of the Earth, flags, and country facts. Note also their Xpeditions section for students and teachers, with printable page-size maps of states, provinces, countries, continents, or the world and "home to the U.S. National Geography Standardsand to thousands of ideas, tools, and interactive adventures that bring them to life."
Outline Maps-- World and regional maps in PDF that "may be printed and copied for personal or classroom use," from Education Place, of the Houghton Mifflin Company.
Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection at the University of Texas is one of the very best online, with finely detailed maps of different styles and dates.
Reference Maps-- Regional and global maps from the World Factbook reference annual of the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States.
ReliefWeb Map Centre-- From ReliefWeb, many online maps, in a wide range of types, accessible by country and by emergency or disaster conditions that required international relief assistance, including past situations.
Quick Maps-- Features small GIF maps of the countries of the world, with country information.
Terraserver-- Online atlas of high-resolution satellite imagery and aerial photography of most of the United States and parts of scores of other countries.
United Nations Atlas of the Oceans-- "An Internet portal providing information relevant to the sustainable development of the oceans. It is designed for policy-makers who need to become familiar with ocean issues and for scientists, students and resource managers who need access to databases and approaches to sustainability."
United Nations Cartographic Web Site-- An excellent site, with many general and peacekeeping maps online and links to other U.N. map sites. Maps are in PDF format for best display and print results.
Worldmapper-- "A collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest." From the University of Sheffield, these cartograms show the global distribution of many attributes, such as population, trade flows, immigration, refugees, tourism, and so on.
WORLDTIME-- Features an "interactive world atlas, information on local time, sunrise and sunset times in several hundred cities, and a database of public holidays worldwide."
World Time Zones Map-- Time zones of the world, with the current times, sun clock, time zone maps to print.
World Wind-- From the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an excellent free downloadable program with many plug-ins that "lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there."
